avon park high another teacher suspected of sharing nude pictures of herself with a 16- year-old student. >> it doesn't make sense in my mind. i don't know how it makes sense in theirs. >> that's not what we send our kids to school for. >> i have many people calling and saying is it okay to send my kids to school. >> reporter: the highlands county sheriff confirms nine more charges have been filed against safety hook. the middle school teacher was recently jailed for having sex with a 14-year-old student. less than two weeks ago a sexting scandal at lake placid middle school involving so many graphic images on so many student's phones the principal had to call an emergency meeting with parents. >> maybe you need to have a sit down with what is appropriate and what is not. >> reporter: district administrators say it is not their hiring practices that seem to have been the issue.

today the judge asked the jurors if they are familiar with hogan, his past or the sex tape case. the jurors will be down to nine by monday morning when the trial is set to begin. as soon as the trial gets underway you can watch it live with our 10 news wtsp app. it is free from your app store. the florida department of transportation is finally adding a traffic light to a dangerous stretch of road. the signal is up along hillsborough avenue between meridian point apartments in east tampa. that's after years of people getting hurt and in some cases getting killed while crossing the street there. many of the injuries have the students darting through traffic to get to school. officials in tampa say the light costs $350,000 and will be fully operational by the end of next week. tampa is one step closer to

of small amounts of marijuana. city council voted to move forward with the idea. if someone is caught with 20- grams or less of marijuana they could pay a fine of $70 up to $450 for a fourth arrest. this is all meant to keep young people out of jail. most people who spoke up today support the ordinance. >> by passing this ordinance they'll be protecting us from the system. from the bad laws that we are having to get severely punished for. it is not only to get high. some people use it for their illness. >> final vote is set for march 17th. if it passes the measure needs a signature from mayor buckhorn before it can take effect. a special 10 news investigation into florida's 1020 life law. this week we shared the story of a polk county man spending 20 years in prison for firing warning shots. eric white's sentence fell

felons. warning shots under the law are considered aggravated assault. mandatory minimum sentences issue. earlier today bo zimmer spoke sentences. >> eric white has served nine to go. he had no criminal background and no one was injured or touched in his case. it is cases like this one that have prompted a group called fam or families against mandatory minimum to advocate for change. i sat down with white at the polk correctional institution. he says his actions were in self defense. the 1020 life law was designed to crack down on criminals who use guns during a robbery or carjacking. more often those people take plea deals. last week governor scott signed

legislators passed removing aggravated assault from the charges in the law. director of fam greg newburn says this is a victory but says action is still needed for white's case. >> every day that eric white spends in prison is a tragedy. he makes one mistake, and even granting every fact that the state alleges in this case, assuming he is guilty of everything he said, it is and unnecessarily harsh sentence. it is a heart breaking sentence. it can be fixed. it can be fixed tomorrow. >> representative neil from polk county spoke about the issue and the opportunity the governor has to grant a pardon to white. you can see that interview as well as new interviews with white's dad. you can download our 10 news app. search 10 news in the app store. watch your smart phone or watch it on your tablet, it is a very touching interview. we hope you have a chance to take a look at that.

in new port richey a threat scribbled on a bathroom wall leads to a school lock down. the school says the student wrote a message saying the student was going to bring a gun to school and shoot someone. after a brief lock down investigators found a girl on social media taking credit for the threat. she later said it was meant to be a joke. around the state tonight lawmakers are rewriting the death penalty after the u.s. supreme court called it unconstitutional. that new bill puts the power the hands of a jury instead of a judge. supreme court said it was unconstitutional for a judge to reach a different decision than juries. expect a shorter back to school tax break this year. senate panel approved a bill that shrunk the holiday from ten days to three in august. you'll only be able to buy clothes and school supplies. strawberry festival back in plant city.

games won't rip you off. hillsborough county sheriff's office checking games and rules ensuring they are all fair. earlier this week state inspectors made sure every ride was safe and put together proper. the fair draws crowds from around the world including tampa. >> the weather is nicer here. it is nice and warm. and we have cooler weather. it is nice. we enjoy the strawberries, too. >> best strawberries in the world. tickets are $10 for adults. $5 for kids. kids under six are free. construction on the thonotosassa exit didn't get finished in time. florida department of transportation spokesperson says they wanted to get it done but there was never a guarantee.

there is a lot of competition out there. companies are trying so hard to keep shopping experiences fast and friendly. when it comes to neighborhood grocery stores trade joe's reigns supreme in customer satisfaction. publix and aldi go next. target is ten stores lower on the list. shopping online is forcing target and other stores to make big changes to lure you in.

there it is there running around houston, memphis, nashville and approaching the mountains around tennessee, carolinas and around virginia. this system is tracking a little further south than the last front. still far enough to the north that our impact won't be felt with, other than a few passing showers that are trying to get organized here around louisiana, those will track across the gulf in the middle of the night. we have a chance at a few showers. we'll talk about the timing. i think you'll like that. this evening it will be dry. we are talking well before sunrise. after your evening plans are done. timing on rain we could see is in the pocket where the rest of your friday is looking lovely. cloudy and mid 60s tonight. tracking this front on future cast showing you are watching this system come in around 3:00 a.m. to our northern counties. it could take until around 7:00 a.m.

here you can see, again, around 3:00 to 4:00 we'll be looking at the front come in around 5:00 or 6:00 in the bay area. having said that, it is just a few showers that we are expecting. no severe weather. no thunderstorms rumbling you up. system. that is maybe some wet roads as you grab your keys and coffee and head out the door. that's about it. it is gone, out of here by 7:00 to 8:00 in the morning for tampa and st. pete. could be 9:00 to 10:00 for sarasota, north port and sebring. the majority of the friday forecast is sunshine filled. a very pretty day. looking very lovely. we may be having a lock up on this system. you can get the seven-day forecast on the other one. i'm jump over in a second. i'll try to get this to advance. high temperatures will be behind this front in the mid 70s for your friday. warmer as we get into the upcoming forecast for the weekend.

loaded i'll roll it out for you. i'll be looking at 77 on saturday. 78 on sunday. we'll find mornings in the mid 50s where they should be for the weekend. little above average for the afternoon highs. with sunshine i don't think you'll mind for the weekend. 80s are in the forecast for tampa monday through thursday. which will mean suburbs and middle of the state, heart land, plant city, mid to upper 80s starting on monday through thursday. a little windy on tuesday and wednesday from the southeast hour winds. other than the brief showers 7:00 to 8:00 am that's all we are tracking as far as fronts. until the following friday that's the next system we are keeping our eye on. probably the kind of forecast you were hoping for. we'll have more at 11:00.

bolts are two point behind the panthers for first place. panthers play colorado later tonight. rays at home against the orioles today. jennings may not be a new bat but he missed a lot last year. he cracked a pair of rbi doubles today to go with the one he had yesterday. steve pierce is new from last year. he hit an rbi double the other way in the 1st inning to make it a 3-0 game. dickerson in the second. this is more than deep to right. it is way back. it hit the board and kept going on to the roof of the ray's offices. estimated at 569 feet.

at 11:00 i'll go one-on-one with one of the newest members of pro football hall of fame. another tampa guy who will be remembered forever in canton. honored it is almost impossible to put into words. >> i sat down today with tampa's eddie barlow, from the hall of fame class 2016. we'll talk winning five 49ers. we'll talk about his relationship with another tampa guy, freddie soloman tonight at 11:00. the sports world lost a fine writer today. he passed away from cancer of the blood. he worked for the st. pete times for 27 years and covered the globe for sports. 33 masters. ten olympic games. he was a terrific writer and a good friend to a lot of us. he was 76 years old.

tonight special olympics team are returning to the bay area. land o'lakes team honored on the senate floor. team won a bronze medal in the 2015 special olympic world summer games. players told 10 news the lessons they learned on the soccer field and their friendships is like winning gold. >> that is a great attitude. that's it for "10 news at 6:00". see you back here tonight at 11:00. for breaking news anytime, is always on.
