it will tower 41 stories over beach drive and drastically change the skyline in the booming downtown area. 10news reporter sarah hollenbeck is live on first avenue north where the new one st petersburg tower will stand in less than 2 years. sarah, give us an idea of how big this is? imagine how long a football field is. now, imagine 1 and a half football fields stacked up right here in the downtown st pete skyline. this building will be so tall in fact that the companies working to build it, have to persuade the federal aviation administration to raise the allowed skyrise height to 500 feet and divert air traffic getting to albert whitted airport. right now-- developers are seeing a lot of demand for new skyrises in both
the one st petersburg tower is one of 1,200 residential units either recently completed or under construction right in tampa, at least a dozen projects are underway now that will double the amount of people living in downtown. the st pete pier is playing a huge role in this. people are thrilled about the new pier coming to downtown and developers tell me that combines with the walkability to restaurants and shops is really helping downtown thrive. here's what i'm digging into next-- parking in downtown st pete is a huge hassle. how will this huge
impact parking and traffic in downtown. live in downtown st pete, sarah hollenbeck, 10news wtsp as the republican presidential candidates fight for a gop nomination...they continue to fight amongst themselves to get there. last night's debate in detroit was full of personal attacks as candidates try to slow donald trump's momentum. 10news reporter emerald morrow is live in the satellite center. emerald, inside the debate wasn't the only place where there was some pushback. that's right, hundreds of protesters braved and frigid temperatures to say they don't feel republicans have adequately addressed in their state. here you can see those protesters holding up signs saying "flint lives matter." the city's water crisis has been a big point of contention for lots of people in the state...as many say republican governor rick snyder, and the republican party as a whole hasn't done enough to fix the aftermath of all the lead in the water.
debate protested minimum wage, calling for a boost to fifteen dollars an hour. the protesters say everyone deserves a right to clean drinking water and a fair wage...and that's a message they feel the gop needs to hear. there's also a protest of a different kind happening here in florida. this morning, a judge will hear a case challenging whether or not cruz and rubio are even eligible to run for president. i'm working on that and will have more at 6 o'clock. allison, back to you. if you don't want to face the crowds to vote on florida's presidential primary, you'll want to pay attention to this. early voting in pinellas, pasco, sarasota and manatee counties will begin tomorrow. hillsborough and polk began early voting earlier this week. remember, the primary is tuesday, march 15 and only voters who are already registered democrat or republican are allowed to vote. today, the florida senate is expected to debate on a controversial topic: medical marijuana. this comes one day after the florida
that expands the use of medical marijuana for patients with terminal conditions. the legislation would expand the "right to try act", which allows people with a terminal illness to use marijuana of all strengths and doses. jury selection continues today in the hulk hogan, gawker sex tape trial. right now the pool of potential jurors stands at 55.. but must be cut down to nine by the time the trial starts on monday in st. pete. as we've been reporting.. terry bollea, also known as hulk hogan, is suing the website over a leaked sex tape. parents fed up with the state's standardize testing are taking action...by having their children do nothing on test day. it's called opting out. statewide, the movement appears to be growing with the help of social media. the students break the seal on the test, and sign their name, but not answer any questions. they don't believe the florida standards assessment accurately assesses teachers, school quality and
school districts out, but there's really no power to enforce it. affect a student academically but it schools grade from the state if enough students don't take the test. if you're a pet owner, it's going to be hard not to be frustrated about this story. a minnesota couple is in trouble after the animal found 95 dogs in their home. the organization investigating the case for over half a year. agents say this went beyond an ordinary rescue. each time the agency went to check on the home, the breeders would move them into a different home. thankfully, medicine has helped these animals start their recovery, but some are still suffering from feeling neglected. as you get breakfast ready...maybe grab
coffee, listen to this. two different studies show possible health benefits from yogurt and large amounts of coffee. boston researchers found women who ate five or more servings of yogurt a week had a lower risk of developing high blood pressure. researchers in sweden and the u.s. found drinking around six cups of coffee a day reduced the risk of multiple sclerosis. they say coffee has anti- inflammatory properties that could explain the link. google is trying to change the way you pay for things at the store. right now, the company is testing out a mobile payment service called "hands free." when a customer wants to use the app to make a purchase.. all they have to do is say "i'll pay with google." the company are testing it in san francisco right now.. and no word on when they plan to expand. if you're making plans for the weekend, this is something you'll want to watch out for. the gasparilla festival of the arts is this weekend. it's your chance to check out works of art including pottery, photography, and paintings from hundreds of different artists. it begins

the first gop debate since super tuesday turned into a shouting match, with two of the three candidates trailing donald trump throwing jabs at the frontrunner. ohio governor john kasich proclaimed himself the only adult on the detroit debate stage. many in the republican establishment have launched a campaign to derail trump. two-time gop presidential candidate mitt romney called him a phony. the skyline in downtown st. petersburg is about to change. today construction for "one st. pete" breaks ground. it will be the tallest building in pinellas county. check out the renderings we were able to get.. the 41-story building will feature condos, a hotel and retail space. this, along with the construction of the pier, comes with a lot of traffic and parking changes to the downtown area. another round of jury selection begins
hogan, gawker sex tape trial. the trial is set to begin on monday in a st. petersburg courtroom. terry bollea, known as hulk hogan, is suing the tabloid site for 100 million dollars over a leaked sex tape. right now, there are 55 potential jurors, but that number will need to by cut down to nine by the time opening statements are made on monday. lots of reaction to the new ghostbusters trailer. --first full scene of the trailer was released thursday --the all-female cast reboot stars kristin wiig, melissa mccarthy, kate mckinnon and leslie jones. --hits theaters july 15. --you'll notice it pays tribute to the famous new york public library ghost scene from the original 1984 ghostbusters starring bill murray and dan aykroyd, among others. --worked with some original producers on the project --lots of reaction on twitter -- some loved it, others expressed doubt it would live
