10news reporter emerald morrow is live there this morning. emerald, manatees can live in both fresh and saltwater and be just fine, so why is it so important to get them out now? it's all about the water temperature. the manatees should be doing well now and they have a lot of food to eat in the lake, but the concern is once that water temperature starts to drop below 68 degrees, it can start to hurt the mammals... and that's why in a few hours, we're going to see a huge group of environmental officials convene here to try and rescue few manatees that neighbors have spotted swimming around here. they got stuck in the lake after officials let up the floodgate to prevent flooding
so now, agencies including fish and wildlife commission, usgs, as environmental workers from uf and the clearwater marine aquarium will be out here at 9 to work together to try and rescue the animals. it's an effort that could take all day to do---as manatees are huge animals that on average weigh about a thousand pounds, but can grow to be much heavier. so, the environmentalists that will be out here tomorrow will be doing a lot of work. but they need your help, too. at 5:30, i'll explain what you need to do if you happ t on the lake. back to you. some people on facebook this morning are wondering about the manatee that some people on facebook this morning are wondering about the manatee that got stuck in a storm drain in jacksonville. allison, what an amazing rescue. the manatee is now recovering at sea world in orlando. it took crews up to six hours to cut pipes and clear the way to get the 950 pound female free. city workers were paving a street when they
on her nose. at sea world, a team used a large crane to lower the manatee into a tank where they gave her a thorough exam. the manatee's veterinarians say she will likely stay at sea world for a few days or even a week before being released back into the wild. a lot of you watched and shared your thoughts on our facebook live stream as crews were rescuing the manatee.ma giving your praise to the rescue team. olivia writes, "woo hoo! great work! mary thinks they should have a little fun naming the manatee. she writes, "they should name him- storm,or her - stormie . or -her faith or him- saint." this is really tough to see this morning. crews across the southeast will be back out this morning checking out the damage after more than a dozen tornadoes hit alabama, louisiana, mississippi and tennessee. at least five people have been killed.
make sure people are okay. in rosalie, alabama, a tornado ripped apart homes and businesses. three people were killed inside their mobile home. about 100 miles north, a firefighter and his wife were killed in tennessee. at least five other counties in the state were also hit. the twisters were part of a system that also tore through georgia, louisiana, and mississippi. look at this waterspout caught on camera in destin. areas in northern florida were under a tornado watch when this video was taken. annie belter shot the video. she said it was taken along the chocta-whatchee bay. those storms tore through just as crews in tennessee were getting a deadly wildfire under control. at least seven people have been killed. the fires, which spread in gatlinburg and pigeon forge monday, charred thousands of acres and destroyed hundreds of homes and buildings. more than 14 thousand have been forced to leave
know how many people are unaccounted for. right now, crews are battling a massive fire at a rec center in tampa. the winston park recreation center is on destin drive, west of the selmon expressway near south 76th steet. details are still coming in, but take a look at this picture from hillsborough county rescue. you can see just how massive this fire is. an investigation is underway to find out what caused it, according to our news partners with the tampa bay times, the rec center was going to be renovated by the vinik family and the the boys & girls clubs of tampa bay. some sad news to pass on this morning.. the police officer that was shot in tacoma, washington, has died. the officer hasn't been identified. what we do know is that they were responding to a domestic
times and is believed to still be barricaded inside the home. right now that neighborhood is on lockdown. this story has a lot of you talking this morning. should schools be required to give kids recess? right now-- parents and lawmakers across the state are working together to get play time back. 10news reporter sarah hollenbeck is live in the satellite center. sarah, they're making a lot of progress. yes, there are two bills being introduced right now for the next session....and it was parents who paved the way for this change. the bills would require schools to give elementary school kids at least 20 minutes of free- play recess a day. this is a huge relief to parents who say their kids need time to just be kids. so why was recess taken away in the first place? schools are working feverishly to cram in as much material into the day as possible since the no child left behind plan started in 2002, according to the center on education policy...
