6:04 am
she handily won the other right here in florida. of course, the sanders campaign still moving on, hoping as i mentioned to win one state, but that did not happen. clinton told her supportts right here in south florida that she believes this is one of the most consequential elections in our lifetime. donald trump. >> our commander in chief has to be able to defend our country, nonoembarrass it. >> the fact is we have to bring our party together. we have to bring it together. we have -- >> trump, of course, waking up this morning a big wininr as well. he told his supporters even netive ads against him ap pier to have backfired and actually helped him out in florida. he did not take ohio. he's changing the race. details on that are just ahead here on nbc 6. sheli and eric?

florida was the end of the line for senator marco rubio. rubio suspending his campaign nearly a year after it started. nbc 6 reporter erika glover is live at the freedom tower in downtown miami. what is he telling supporters this morning? >> ggod morning, sheli. i can tell you after a second place finish to donald trump, senator marco rubio suspended his campaign. 172 is the numberof delegates that senator marco rubio has right now. thoseill stay with him. that's because he suspended his campaign. he did not abandon his campaign. so if people still vote for him or have already cast ballots in upcoming primary states, he'll add to that number, but it shouldn't be very sisinificant. during tuesday's concession speech, rubio thanked all his supporters for everything and congratulated donald trump on his big victory in florida. he talked about his parents who
6:06 am
1956 who he says had little education, no money and no connectionn they even thought about returning to cuba, but persevered. >> i know all these issues firsthand. i've lived paycheck to paycheck. i grew up paycheck to paycheck. i know what it's like to have to figure out how to find the money to fix the air conditioner that broke last night. i take great comfort in the ancient words which teaches us that in their hearts humans plan their course, but the lord is establishes their steps. so yes, while this may not have been the year for a hopeful and optimistic message about our future, i still remain hopeful and opt mistake about america. >> reporter: now we're going back through that speech. coming up in the next half hour, we'll tell you more about the concessionpeech and what the suspension means for this campaign. reporting in downtown miami, erika glover nbc 6 news.

we mentioned john kasich won his home state of ohio. here is closer look at the numbers. kasich brought in 40% of the vote. the win is the first for him and it does make it harder for trump to win the nomination outright. trump now has to win 60% of the remaining delegates to go uncontested into the convention. it turned out to be a tough night for bernie sanders getting shut out on the democratic side. nbc's dan krauth reports this morning from wynwood. >> there were a lot of boos inside campaign headquarters every time clinton won a state. there was a lot of cheering from supporters of bernie sanders. they sea despite last night's big loss, they're stiti optimistic about the future. have a listen to what supporters and senator sanders have to say. >> we have a lot of delegates out there. this is just getting started. >> we're going to create an economy that works for all of

we know that now rubio has dropped out, kasich has been taking ohio. looks like hillary clinton is sailing toward the nomination. >> thank you florida, thank you north carolina, thank you ohio. >> thosethree states plus missouri and a more narrow victory in her home state of illinois leaves hillary clinton with more than 500 delegates this morning and a clear path to the nomination. bernie sanders is already in arizona for next week's primary. >> we will win if the voter turnout is high. let's make it high. >> donald trump won even with the violence surrounding his campaign. >> you explain it to me because i can't. my numbers went up. don't understand it. nobody understandsdsit.
6:13 am
the last straw for marco rubio. he's out. >> after tonight it is clear ttt while we are on the rght side, this year we will not be on the winning side. >> losing ohio to john kasich means trump needed nearly 60% of all remaining delegates to avoid a brokered convention. >> we're going to go all the way to cleveland and secure the republican nomination. >> ted cruz is hoping to make it a two-man race. >> america now has a clear choice going forward. >> but apparentlt not an easy one. now, this is interesting and it has a lot to do with those voters in florida. it looks like the exit polls are telling us the reblican party may have some trouble ahead. half the voters in florida, in fact, more than half the voters in florida and some other states did not vote for donald trump during these primaries. half of those in florida who didn't say if there was a third partyy candidate to consider in the general election, they might

trump starts talking about them nicely. here is what he said about rubio late last nit. >> number one, i want to congratulate marco rubio on having run a tough campaign. he's tough and smart and has a great future. but i have to say, and nobody has ever, ever in the history of politics received the kind of negative advertising that i have. >> you noticethere a different tone. trump addressed his suppters from his house in palm beach calling florida his second home. hillary clinton close in miss sorry and illiliis, she won all five states against bernie sanders. bernie faa can rest easy. in less than ten minutes, you can cap more from the "today" show whenen kristen welker tells us what it means coming forward. both primaries on tuesday.

6:42 am
let's take another vantage point here and adjust and look into -- well, it turns out to be a very similar shot here. i wanted to@ show you the clouds. they've been in and out, flirting with our skyline here first thing this morning. most of the fog is contained down to west kendall, florida city and homestead areawhere the visibility is again reporting minute by minute, one to three m mles of visibility. that's all tucked away down acrososthat portion of the county. we move into at least the twcounty area, visibility looks pretty good, pretty decent here, light winds overnight and with the winds coming offshore, that's driving the temperatures down into the upper 60s and lower 70s. 71 in pembroke.s, 72 in opa-locka, 72 also in miami. we'll level temperatures out around 70 or so. passing clouds above that i was showing you in our first alert cameras, not yielding any precipitation. i think we have a lot of sunshine in today's forecast, even tomorrow and through friday.

kristen welker is in miami. >> reporter: last night was a game-changer. secretary clinton is waking up this morning as a strong democratic front-runner after that defeat in michiga last week, she proved last night she can compete in every corner of the country. that dealt a major blow to bernie sanders. his path to the nomination got tougher. the clinton campaign was expecting to win florida, expectingto win north carolina. she did that and did that convincingly. ohio looked a lot more competitive and she pull a off double-digit win there. the fact she was able to win missouri illinois, it does two things. it gives her a lot of momentum and it gives the optics again that she is going to be tough to beat. the more imporornt thing for the clinton campaign is the math. it's going to be very difficict for senator sanders to catch up to her. secretary clinton has virtually put this race out of reach. still senator sanders vowing to
