((walter)) its now 5:?? thanks for joining us. i'm walter allen((jen)) and i'm jen epstein. we want to start this morning.. with a news alert out of afghanistan. two u-s service members are dead..an fighting the taliban. nato made the announcement just minutes ago. the service members were helping afghan soldiers push back the taliban from the kunduz district when they came under fire. nato has yet to release the names of the soldiers. we'll continue to follow this developing story and have updates throughout good day tampa bay. (dave scattered clouds with more pm warmth in the forecast today. high temps head back to the mid 80s. tonight will be mostly clear and nice; lows in the upper 60s. mostly sunny and warm for friday, with high temps in the low to mid 80s.
after 108 years without a world series title... the chicago cubs are on top of the baseball world.. after a thrilling 10-inning win over the cleveland indians. and as you can imagine - cubs fans are thrilled. this is what it looked like in chicago - pure joy from cubs fans who haven't been able to celebrate a championship in their lifetime... fans have been dancing in the streets.. the celebrations started when former ray and world series m-v-p "ben zobrist".. hit a go-ahead double in the 10th inning..
the cubs won their first world series back in 1908 against the detroit tigers. since then -- the team has had their fair share of losses, some say thanks to a curse. there was the collapse of the team in 19-69, after spending 155-days in first place. then in 2003.. the world series was in their grasp when the team found itself just five outs from the championship. cubs fan "steve bartman" reached out and caught a foul ball behind the bullpe.. they went on to lose that game. going back even farther to 19-45... when a man tried to bring his pet goat into wrigley field but was turned away. upset -- the man cursed the team, saying quote: "the cubs ain't gonna win no more". chicago went on to lose the next two games and fans referred to that as the "billy goat's curse". but it looks like the cubs managed to reverse the curse. for a local twist on all
hogan and the media company struck a confidential settlement agreement, reportedly awarding the wrestler 31-million dollars in cash.. hogan sued gawker after it posted a sex tape of him online. back in march, a pinellas county jury handed hogan a 140-million dollar judgment in the lawsuit. but soon after, gawker went bankrupt and shut down. on wednesday, both sides agreed to the new 31-million dollar payout. more bad news for allegiant airlines.. tampa bay times report.. has reveleaed that the company's fleet of planes.. are ?four times more likely to break down in the air -- than any other u-s carrier.. the newspaper found in 2015.. allegiant planes made 77 unscheduled landings because of serious maintenance problems. allegiant says it has improved maintenance practices.. and is in the process of phasing out its decades old planes for newer airbuses. the company also says it is focused on maintaining low costs, while
if you've seen the wording of the amendment one ballot initiative on solar power... you may be a little confused.. the tricky language of it all.. has prompted opponents to make a last-ditch effort to strike it down. they've asked the florida supreme court to review the ammendment's wording.. because they say it's deceptive. and their argument -- is based on a leaked audio recording.. released by the tampa bay times, and the miami herald.. audio recording: sal nuzzo, james madison institute 11:17 "solar power polls very well, to the degree that we can use a little bit of political jiu- jitsu and take what they're hitting us on and use it to our benefit." those in favor benefit." those in favor of amendment one say nothing was said on the recording that ?proves decption..only savvy politics.. they say the amendment is simple -- it brings governement regulation to an industry that's currently uncontrolled.. the majority of the court originally signed off on the amendment's wording.. so it's unclear if wednesday's lawsuit will have any impact on the final decision come november

the investigation continues this morning.. into the deaths of two iowa police officers.. the two officers ... were found dead in their cars, just minutes apart. police say 29-year-old "justin martin" and 39- year-old sergeant "anthony beminio" were both gunned down.. at seperate intersections in the des moines area.. 46-year-old "scott michael green" has since been taken into custody after a seven-hour manhunt. police said green was known to authorities... and had recently been in an altercation involving the confederate battle flag.. during a high school football game. among those paying tribute to the slain officers... saying they were quote: "taken in shameful acts of violence".. authorities in mississippi are investigating a church fire.. as a ?hate crime. hopewell baptist church, an african american church in greenville.. was burned and vandalized tuesday night. someone also spray painted "vote trump" on the side of the building. the main sanctuary sustained most of the damage.. and authorities say it took about 15 minutes to put out the fire.. the 22-member chruch has been at that site
the new list of 20-16's fattest states in america.. is shedding light on the nation's obesity epidemic. and it's not good news for the south. southern states make up eight of the top ten spots in "wallet-hub's" list.. missississippi, louisiana, and arkansas make up the top 3.. florida -- not too bad... ranking 30th.. on the other end of the scale.. new jersey, colorado and utah were the healthiest. consistently rank at.. ?or near the top of c-d-c tables that track the percentage of people who have been diagnosed with diabetes or who are obese.. to make this years list -- researchers looked at things like obesity rates, unhealthy habits, and how well the state's children are faring.

he stole more than 10-thousand- dollars from a little league baseball program. john farrar is no longer the president of the tarpon springs little league. police say the 51-year-old turned himself in for stealing nearly 13-thousand-dollars from the organization... but officials say that number could go higher. starting back in may... police say farrar admitted to pocketing money from concession stands... as well as transferring money from the little league's account to his own 300-dollars at a time. when the league started asking questions... that's police believe farrar was having financial problems... and may have been evicted from his home recently. the league sent a letter reassuring parents... saying this has been rough - and thanking police. a little league sponsor says plans for a new score board have been pushed back. farra has
