Not until the mid-twentieth century did an American school of composition develop and flourish. Based on the great European traditions but fueled by the American spirit of simplicity and optimism, American composers developed their own voice. Two quintessential American masters are represented on tonight's program: Samuel Barber, with his overture to The School for Scandal and Adagio for Strings; and Leonard Bernstein, with the Symphonic Dances from West Side Story and Overture to Candide. Also featured is the DSO's 2011 Young Artists Auditions Winner, Daniel Shen, performing Liszt's Piano Concerto No. 1 in E-flat Major, S. 124. Barbara Schubert leads the DuPage Symphony Orchestra in this concert given at Wentz Concert Hall in Naperville, Illinois. 19 March 2011.
