Although they shared a common homeland as well as the international spotlight, Sergei Rachmaninoff and Igor Stravinsky could hardly have been more different: in personality, output, or legacy. Rachmaninoff's lushly romantic Second Piano Concerto performed by Young Concert Artists International Winner Gleb Ivanov epitomizes his widely popular style, with broad, sweeping melodies, rich harmonies, colorful orchestration, and passionate and poignant emotions. Stravinsky's revolutionary Le sacre du printemps (The Rite of Spring), written little more than a decade later, redefined the course of music history. The intensely visceral score, with its raw and unrelenting rhythmic drive, prompted an audience riot at the ballet's 1913 premiere. Experience these dramatic musical opposites in one evening as Barbara Schubert directs the DuPage Symphony Orchestra in the final subscription concert of the 57th season. Wentz Concert Hall, Naperville, IL, US. 14 May 2011.
