Defense Technical Information Archive

The Defense Technical Information Center (DTIC) is the premier repository for research and engineering information for the United States Department of Defense. DTIC's Suite of Services is available to DoD personnel, defense contractors, federal government personnel and contractors and selected academic institutions. The general public can access unclassified, unlimited information, including many full-text downloadable documents, through the public Web site, DTIC Online.

DTIC's collections contain over 4 million documents including technical reports, research in progress and Independent Research and Development (IR&D) summaries. DTIC also publishes searchable Congressional budget data shortly after its release from Congress. DTIC acquires approximately 25,000 new documents each year.

On June 4, 2004, DTIC became a DoD Field Activity under the management of the Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition, Technology, and Logistics, reporting to the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering (ASD(R&E)). Mr. Christopher Thomas is the Administrator.

DTIC's mission statement is "To provide essential, technical research, development, testing and evaluation (RDT&E) information rapidly, accurately and reliably to support our DoD customers' needs."

We report on the design and optimisation of a 600 GHz double barrier resonant tunneling diode (RTD) oscillator. Using the simple Esaki equivalent circuit diode model and published DC experimental I-V data, a custom device model was developed and integrated within a commercial harmonic balance (HB) simulator. This technique utilizes a spline interpolation algorithm as part of the device model to determine instantaneous values of device voltage and current when called from within the main HB...

To understand entomological issues during the Korean War, one must first know something about Korea and the cultural and political situation during that period. Korea is a peninsular country that over the centuries has periodically been occupied by China or Japan. These occupations had a detrimental effect on the country because human and material resources were routinely stripped from the peninsula. The occupations and subsequent national freedom led to a strong sense of national pride in the...

The Symposium identified the need for carefully conceived experimental unsteady flow data, particularly for both unseparated and separated two- and three-dimensional turbulent boundary layers. Detailed, accurate measurements of critical flow parameters was encouraged. The wind tunnel continues to be the main instrument for providing experimental aerodynamic data for the purpose of load and performance evaluation and for verification of theoretical results. In both cases it is imperative that the user has confidence in the quality of the results, which means that they must have information as to what accuracy to attach to the data. The quality of wind tunnel results depends upon both the accuracy of measurements and the imperfections provided by the wind...

A majority of military optical systems operate in the atmoshphere and their performance is often degraded by weather. For several decades researchers have studied in-depth the performance limitations imposed by the atmosphere and devised techniques to get around these problems. The purpose of this symposium was to bring together and update our understanding of atmospheric optical propagation, present a comprehensive review of the state-of-the-art, and provide interaction among the key...

There is a continuing need to increase the velocity and associated terminal performance of kinetic energy ammunition as tougher armor reducer, into the surface of standard propellants, together with appropriate changes in geometry and loading density has been suggested as a means of increasing velocity by as much as ten percent. The attainment of such a desirable performance gain is critically dependent on the deterrent's satisfying certain requirements: (1) chemical compaatibility with the...

An experimental investigation was conducted to obtain direct measurements of side-on overpressures from spherical charges of six different high explosives at small scaled distances ranging from 0.74 to 3.5 ft/lb to the 1/3 power. The pressure-time recordings of the incident airblast waves were processed to obtain peak side-on overpressures, shock wave arrival times, side- on overpressures, shock wave arrival times, side-on impulses, and positive durations. Comparisons of the test data were made...

Recent demographic and economic trends present mobilization problems for both the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and the Warsaw Pact. When the United States and the Soviet Union agreed to rid Europe of intermediate-range nuclear weapons, their agreement increased the emphasis on conventional force balances-thus creating anew strains within and between the alliances. These developments make the time ripe for a comprehensive study of NATO and Warsaw Pact capabilities to mobilize their...
