Defense Technical Information Archive

The Defense Technical Information Center (DTIC) is the premier repository for research and engineering information for the United States Department of Defense. DTIC's Suite of Services is available to DoD personnel, defense contractors, federal government personnel and contractors and selected academic institutions. The general public can access unclassified, unlimited information, including many full-text downloadable documents, through the public Web site, DTIC Online.

DTIC's collections contain over 4 million documents including technical reports, research in progress and Independent Research and Development (IR&D) summaries. DTIC also publishes searchable Congressional budget data shortly after its release from Congress. DTIC acquires approximately 25,000 new documents each year.

On June 4, 2004, DTIC became a DoD Field Activity under the management of the Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition, Technology, and Logistics, reporting to the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering (ASD(R&E)). Mr. Christopher Thomas is the Administrator.

DTIC's mission statement is "To provide essential, technical research, development, testing and evaluation (RDT&E) information rapidly, accurately and reliably to support our DoD customers' needs."

A test was conducted in a transonic wind tunnel to determine the aerodynamic characteristics of a 0.5-scale ejection seat escape system with a dummy crew member attached during simulated rocket-off and rocket-on conditions. Results were obtained at free-stream Mach numbers of 0.6, 0.9, 1.2, and 1.5 through a model angle-of-attack range of 360 deg and model yaw angles up to 45 deg. Space particulate radiation is reviewed, the damage mechanisms are discussed, and estimates are made of the hazardous nature of the various radiation zones. The existing capability for reproducing the space environment in ground test facilities is evaluated. It is concluded that the duplication of the complete space environment is not possible but that useful testing can be accomplished with existing techniques. Research programs are proposed for the evaluation of ground test requirements.

The drag and stability characteristics of flexible supersonic decelerator models at various positions aft of double-strut mounted forebodies were investigated in the 40-in. supersonic tunnel of the von Karman Gas Dynamics Facility. Ten subjects were confined for periods up to 7 days and during this time were exposed to a low-intensity magnetic field (.0001 Wb/sq m at 45 Hz) for periods up to 24 hours. The report presents results of a study to assess the avionics capability of the present generation ARMY MEDEVAC helicopters (UH-1H). The study was based on interviews with experienced MEDEVAC pilots. Analyses were performed to evaluate the baseline avionics and potential improvements against various mission requirements and environmental conditions. The most critical needs identified in the study were night-vision aids and improved navigation capability.

Heinz bodies were produced in red blood cells by exposing the cells to monomethyl-hydrazine (MMH) in vitro in the presence of oxygen. The freeze- cleave technique showed that these Heinz bodies were coarse aggregates and strands of polymerized, oxidatively denatured hemoglobin. A low-cost, disposable latrine system was developed as a substitute for honey-bucket, pit and burnout type latrines. This system, weighing approximately 125 pounds, consists of a 4 ft x 2 ft x 2 ft fiberglass box and lid with plastic piping. It is field assembled without special tools and requires only the digging of a trench and the fabrication of a latrine box for its emplacement. The Zero Input Tracking Analyzer (ZITA) is a human performance measuring device that utilizes a servo principle in providing a perceptual motor task. It was found that subjects who were trained with 3-minute sessions acquired the task more rapidly than a matched group trained with 2-minute sessions.
