Another week, another Luscombe's Choice and the beginning of another series, this time on the rarefied piano music of Scriabin. Scriabin, who was profoundly influenced by Chopin, developed a highly lyrical and idiosyncratic tonal language and stands as one of the most innovative and most controversial of early modern composers. The Great Soviet Encyclopedia said of Scriabin that, "No composer has had more scorn heaped or greater love bestowed..." The album featured this evening is...

Concerto for Violin and Orchestra (1939) by Paul Hindemith (1895-1963). Joseph Fuchs, violin, with the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Sir Eugene Goosens. This is the premier recording of this work and dates from 1962. However, David Oistrakh's recording (made only a few months later) is superior in both sound and performance quality despite coming from a live performance. This transfer is from the original Everest LP SDBR 3040. Transfer by Bob Varney.

Four pieces recorded using the Hauptwerk VPO. Anthony Mark LaMort (Lamourt) organist. Fuga in c - BWV 575 - J.S. Bach -- one of what I describe as the early 'orphan' fugues of JSB. Adagio - Lucien H. Southard -- (1827-1881). From Barbara Owen's collection of American organ music Allein zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ -- Sweelinck. Jesus Meine Zuversicht -- Charles Zeuner. Charles Zeuner (1795-1857). German native who emigrated to Boston in 1824. Oddly remeniscent of Brahms?
