To mark the 40th anniversary of the Beatles disbanding, the Reverend Richard Coles, whose own band The Communards split up, examines how rock groups through the decades have decided to call it a day. From the Beatles through to the Verve who've disbanded several times, Richard trawls the BBC archives to find examples of rock split-ups and to ask whether there can ever be a dignified parting of the ways. He examines the many reasons that bands split and reveals a myriad of circumstances...

A little different show this week, as it is very subjective. A broad sampling from folks some might consider masters. This was the only qualification for inclusion in this show; the musicians have to be undeniable masters of their craft. Sure, some of the selections might be considered Classic Rock - no matter. Pull up a chair or a chaise lounge and a sparkling beverage and enjoy the masters. Artists in this program include The Rolling Stones, Dwight Yoakam, Todd Rundgren, Lee Michaels, Leon...

The Buckinghams are an American Sunshine pop band from Chicago, Illinois, United States. They formed in 1966, and went on to become one of the top selling acts of 1967, charting their only five Top 40 hits in the U.S. that year  In 1967, Billboard magazine declared the Buckinghams to be “the most listened to band in America,” and based on their chart success that year, it would be a hard claim to dispute. As 1967 began, their first release, “Kind of a Drag,” was racing up the charts...

“Psychedelic Promos & Radio Spots” is an outa-site eight-volume series that includes hundreds of (very slightly) trippy radio commercials for shuttered music clubs, new records and movies, upcoming concerts and discontinued products from a half-century ago. You'll also hear then-popular rock groups performing groovy advertising jingles for cereals, soda, shoe stores, jeans, hot dogs and deodorant. (My personal favorites are Iron Butterfly for Ban roll-on, and the Rolling Stonesfor Rice...

Founded in 1962 on the south English Isle of Wight. The then Irish singer Ricky Shane (not Shayne!) Chose the Irish emblem (the shamrock) as a band name. There were not five leafy shamrocks, but four leafy, though rare, so: Ricky Shane and the Shamrocks . After his departure, the band was called only The Shamrocks . The Swedish band of the same name admitted years later that they had taken the name from the British music press.[translated] http://www.stringbeats.de/htm/fotogal/shamrocks.htm

Call their style of music what you want – rock and roll, garage rock, proto-punk – The Sonics were punk through and through. They were punk before punk even existed, and back in 1965 their wild and unconventional style made them the most vicious and threatening band on the planet. Here Come The Sonics was as significant a debut album as any at the time of its release, and its impact has not diminished during the last fifty years. The sound the band created - a feral cocktail of raw blues...

Golden Earring is a  Dutch rock  band. They began in 1961 in The Hague; named the Golden Earrings. In 1969, they became just Golden Earring, (dropping the "s"). They gained world wide  fame  with their  hit song  " Radar Love " in 1973. 1965 was a crucial year for the Golden Earrings. During one of their gigs they are discovered by Fred Haayen, a student who works in the depot of record company Polydor. Haayen manages to get them a record deal with Polydor and will...

The music industry was reeling from the first wave of the British Invasion spurred on by the arrival of the Beatles the previous year. It was a time that the Top 40 format ruled the AM radio airwaves. FM radio, as we know it, was in its infancy and satellite radio was just a twinkle in someone’s mind. There was change in the air and it was about to become a most pivotal year in musical history. Like (a lot) of rolling stones: '1965: The Most Revolutionary Year in Music' by Andrew Grant Jackson

The Easybeats occupy a unique place in the pantheon of 1960s British rock acts. For starters, they were Australian, except that they really weren't — they met in Sydney alright, and being based in Australia with the talent they had gave them a leg-up over any of the local competition. But lead singer Stevie Wright originally came from England (although he'd been in Australia for some years), and bassist Dick Diamonde hailed from the Netherlands, as did guitarist Harry Vanda, while the others,...

Here is another Master Reel Tape of Reelin' In The Years With George Taylor Morris, as he looks at the Dog Days Of Summer. I used to listen to this show often in the '90's on the Classic Rock Radio Station in Colorado Springs, CO. I had this posted for a long while on my YouTube Channel, but it forced me to delete several songs, so here is the complete unedited program for you to enjoy.

The pinnacle of white-boy boogie - Canned Heat. Named after Tommy Johnson's song about an alcoholic desperate for a fix, who takes to Sterno's Canned Heat, a flammable product used as a fuel source, Canned Heat comprised of Bob "The Bear" Hite, Alan "Blind Owl" Wilson, Henry "Sunflower" Vestine, Larry "The Mole" Taylor and Adolfo "Fito" de la Parra. Thus hippy assed boogie was born.

This show falls on a sad day in music history, and although I don't care for shows that take place on someone's "death day", at the same time I've never had my show fall on such a day. Consequently, I decided to create a show for Dear John. The main focus is John Lennon's music from the 1970s, but there's some Beatle stuff in there as well, along with some interesting covers, including songs from Sean and Julian Lennon, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr and Elton John/Bernie Taupin, amongst...

Another in this series of videos collecting clips from various classic TV series, along with plenty of vintage commercials. This episode includes footage of shows from four American television networks (ABC, DuMont, CBS and NBC). Over-sensitive people should be aware that there is a stereotypical image in one segment, as well as a cigarette commercial in another segment. Please forgive the sloppy encoding.

October 1st, 1965 - The Byrds released "Turn! Turn! Turn! (To Everything There Is A Season)" as the first single and title track from their upcoming album. The song was first released by folk group The Limeliters, however, it was written by folksinger Pete Seeger in the late 1950's.
