joining me now, msnbc legal analyst danny cevallos. this is interesting. talk to me how the compliance with the subpoena helped the case that is still in court -- or does it help with the case? >> it does. as deutsche bank provides documents to the prosecutor, keep in mind those documents will remain secret. anything brought in by the grand jury remains highly secret, and so that will inform prosecutors about the scope of their investigation. this really acts as two different data points for comparison. the documents from deutsche bank show what trump puffed up or may have puffed up to the bank to say, hey, i have all this money, loan me more money, whereas, tax returns on the mazur side may provide a true picture of what his finances actually were and possibly show a disparity between what he told banks for purposes of loans, which would be a higher numb presumably, and what he actually had in the form of his tax returns. that's independent of any individual problems with his tax return. >> what does this tell us about the new york investigation, about th

let's talk about deutsche bank. what could they be looking at right now with regards to the documents that they've gotten so far as we've just heard and we know the trump family, trump organization, president trump himself are trying to block any access not only to the financial records at deutsche bank but the records that are at capital one as well where he has a checking account. it doesn't necessarily seem like it's working. >> not so far, but generally speaking on the side of the subpoenas and the attorney general, they have broad ranging subpoena power. the challenge for the trump administration, the trump team, the trump family is that they are third parties that are not directly being subpoenaed. that's always a challenge for every citizen whenever there's a subpoena or a search warrant to a bank and the bank has to disclose their information. the trump plaintiffs have already filed a lawsuit to prevent disclosure of some of these records. and there is case law suggesting that at least when it comes to congr

joining me here on set, nbc legal analyst danny cevallos. how worried should the president be about what deutsche bank has revealed so far? >> he should be worried because it's a crime to inflate your value to a bank in order to obtain a loan. even if the loan is given and you pay it back, you still put the bank at considerable risk by deceiving the bank about how much money you have to pay in case you need to payback that loan in a hurry. so that is the idea behind it. even if there's no ultimate loss to the bank we still have from text banks from being defrauded by people who inflate their assets. >> we don't know what are in these documents that have been released. we do know that the trump administration has been challenging the release of many of his financial records for quite some time. obviously the tax returns which has been the theme of this whole thing. does deutsche bank's cooperation with all of this, is that going weaken his argument here, weaken his stance. >> deutsche bank must cooperate. this is not a thing the president can

danny, we look into all of this. what are these house democrats going to learn from looking after his money right now? >> recall mueller's mandate was very narrow. that's why you saw about a dozen cases many of which we don't know about yet that were farmed out, referred out to other u.s. attorneys' offices including, for example, the southern district of new york. mueller wisely knew that there would be attacks on any prosecutions that appeared outside of his mandate. exhibit a to that is manafort's attempt to throw out his prosecution as beyond the original mandate of mueller. mueller was right in predicting something like getting into trump's finances which seems far afield of russian collusion and obstruction of justice was not a tactically wise thing to do, which is why he sent it outside. he was prescient because that's exactly what paul manafort tried to do. he failed. but he tried and mounted a considerable legal argument that his prosecution was outside of the mandate. >> as you know, the president said ha i

we're getting more market reaction with the global cohead of fx strategy at deutsche bank and danny blanchflower, dartmouth policy director of economics. danny comes to us from hanover, new hampshire. your initial thoughts on the fed? danny: well, my thoughts on the fed were -- here we go again. exactly as a year ago, saying we're going to raise rates. and abased on a wing prayer and hope on trump. saying rate rises are coming in 2017, just as they did not in 2016, so we will see. i do not think they were desperately transparent. it looks like they are hoping that trump is going to come to the rescue. i do not think that is how you should run monetary policy. they did not make it really clear, and i think they completely misunderstood what is going on in the labor market. millions of jobs away from full employment, hence why people voted for trump, all these people who want decent jobs and are out of the labor force voted for trump. so you have the election telling you that you are miles from full employment and the fed as we are at full unemployment and need to raise rates -- i disagree. alix:
