andrea mccarren was on campus when the verdict came down. >> reporter: there is a mix of emotions. shock. sadness. and relief that this high- profile murder case appears to be over. >> a lot of students are disappointed. a lot of people were shocked, when i saw the news. i s like whoa, wow. >> reporter: the bowie state university campus is healing, after a violent fight between roommates ended in death and traumatized the school community. >> i think it's tragic. but at the same time, i heard she was bullied and in a scary situation like that, you are going to try to defend yourself. >> reporter: alexis simpson admitted in court that she plunged a knife into the neck of her roommate, dominique frazier, but she testified it was an act of fear, an act of self-defense, a rare and risky defense. >> everybody was surprised. it's all or nothing. it's a gamble for the defendant but it paid off. she said, i did it, but i did it because my life was in danger. i did it in self-defense. >> reporter: they were disturbed by testimony that both young women kept knives in their dorm rooms. >> it

andrea mccarren is live in waldorf where the arrest of a couple in d.c. may have cracked a murder case. andrea? >> reporter: it did derek. in fact the metropolitan police department provided information here that helped crack a case in waldorf that just stunned the community. tonight, 17-year-old joshua mebane is accused of killing two people and critically injuring another. joshua mebane acted alone allegedly using is semiautomatic weapon when he gunned down a couple walking their dog on a waldorf footpath friday evening. 40-year-old teresa bass was murdered. her husband critically injured. this afternoon, the sheriff's department was able to tell him they had arrested her killer. >> actually the sheriff talked with him and the sheriff was the -- the person who broke the news to him. he was again very emotional. and very -- happy that we caught -- caught mr. mebane. >> reporter: the arrest followed what authorities called an investigative marathon. involving metropolitan police who shared ballistics information with charles county about the murder of a d

. >> andrea mccarren has the look at the post's interview and she has more on broadwell'sed with. >> i was dumbfounded when i heard about the affair. >> reporter: vernon loeb worked with broadwell for 16 months on thing into and she did all the -- the book and she did all the reporting and he crafted the narrative. >> why general petraeus was granting paula broadwell the kind of access he granted her. >> reporter: a question among many. since broadwell had never written a book and had no journalistic experience. loeb speculates petraeus viewed her as someone he could control. >> she got a lot of face time with the general. you know, during her reporting trips to iraq. he was the commander of the war. she spent hours interviewing him, through him she obtained access to all of his commanders. >> reporter: loeb believes broadwell had no idea the affair was going public on friday. she and her husband wither in virginia celebrating her -- were in virginia celebrating her 40th birthday with a party planned saturday night in d.c.. her husband reportedly canceled it via e-mail hours before.

andrea mccarren reports from prince william county tonight. >> reporter: roughly 20,000 more voters in prince william county cast their ballots in this election than in 2008 and that high turnout led to long lines and short tempers. >> it's absurd. >> reporter: this was the scene at one of the polling places where voters waited in line as long as five hours. >> this is the longest line that i've ever seen. >> reporter: one day later some old campaign signs remain, but the anger has subsided. in fact, those who waited in line earned the admiration of some neighbors to the north. >> i would never do that. i mean you should vote but not that -- i mean that's a lot of time to take out of your day to do it. those people are dedicated and i appreciate them voting, but i never would have done that, no. >> it's pretty remarkable. i have a 6-year-old daughter and she had an opportunity to experience that important privilege that we have. >> reporter: not everyone had an unpleasant experience in prince william county. >> we got there about 6:30 and we were in line for about an hour and a half in

andrea mccarren was there. >> it has been a long and difficult campaign. it's also been a joyful one. >> reporter: george allen's concession speech was met with stunned silence until someone in the room yelled "no." >> we're not happy with the results but we're still alive and as long as they don't kill you you can keep fighting. >> i'm trying to remember back in 2000 -- where were we? were people saying god it's all over i'm so sorry and then wow we've got a shot. >> reporter: this was not tonight the virginia republicans had envisioned. >> it's not over yet. there is hope. >> you wouldn't be in denial would you? >> no. we haven't heard from florida. we haven't heard from over states. >> reporter: many in the crowd say this is reminiscence of the 2000 presidential election and they are holding on to a glimmer of hope until every vote is counted. >> really isn't over yet. i mean i do hearken back to 2000 when hey, they were reporting, i went to bed at 3:00 a.m. and when i woke up the next morning it was in turmoil and we were at the supreme court you know.

[ no audio ] >> we'll try to get to her in a moment. we look at the presidential race in maryland. with 61% of the resix reporting, no -- precinct reporting, no surprise with obama leading. also take a look at the presidential numbers from washington, d.c. 48% of the precincts reporting, look at this. overwhelming, 92% for barack obama to 7% for mitt romney. again, no surprise. 40 minutes ago, a winner was declared in the u.s. senate race in virginia. democrat tim kane, as we told you, state republican george allen. we heard some of george allen's concession speech. kane will replace democrat webb who is retiring. democrat john delaney beat out republican incumbent roscoe bartlett this evening. >> the polls closed hours ago. some folks, believe it or not, are still out there in the cold waiting to vote. ken molestina at potomac middle school in virginia. how long is the line now, kenny? >> reporter:
