good hands with allstate. ♪ >>> here at tom clements home in colorado just before 9:00 p.m. tuesday night, witnesses described seeing a black lincoln or cadillac idling outside the victim's home a few minutes before the shooting and authorities called it a vehicle of interest. late this morning 500 miles away in texas, a deputy tried to pull over a man heading south in a black cadillac with colorado license plates, a routine traffic violation. the driver of the car responded by opening fire on the deputy shooting him and hitting him three times before taking off. he then sped in and out of traffic at 100 miles an hour shooting out the window of his car at the officers following him in the high speed chase. ultimately he crashed the car into an 18-wheeler. he got out, fired on the officers again, the officers returned fire and he was hit. tonight, colorado investigators are on the way to texas to determine whether that man in the high speed chase might be linked to the killing of tom kle clements, the colorado prisons chief. the man is still unidentified, in a fort worth popt and fin

. she is the widow of colorado prison's chief, tom clements, who was shot to death last week as he answered the front door of their home in monument, colorado. mrs. clements today speaking at a huge memorial service, honoring her husband. in his tribute to the man he brought to the state two years ago to run colorado prisons, the state's governor, john hickenlooper, who you see here, said that tom clements believed, quote, at the core of his person, that anyone can be redeemed. in terms of the investigation into this murder, the immediate contextual question was whether it was questioned to tom clements' work in the prisons. could this have been random? could this have been personal? or could this have been related to his work in colorado's prisons, his work in the prisons in missouri before he came to colorado, could it have been connected to overall political issues in the state of colorado. the killing happened just hours before governor hickenlooper signed into law the state's contentious but historic new gun reform legislation. tom clements was a supporter of that legislation.

standing there was a man named tom clements. tom clements is the head of the corrections department in colorado. his title was executive director of the colorado department of corrections. there is still no one in custody. authorities have released the description of an unoccupied car that was reportedly seen running, although nobody was in it, near the clements home. the car was described as being a dark-colored or black lincoln. the car was boxy in shape. colorado governor gave an emotional press conference this morning. the governor said tom clements was on the verge of retirement. he had worked in corrections in the state of missouri for three decades before coming to colorado. he had been about to retire, but he, the governor was able to lure him to come to colorado to take the job running the state's prisons, because the governor knew he was the right man for the job. the governor then took questions from the press. and right away, the reporters on scene raised the question whether there might be any connection between this murder last night and the gun debate that's going on in

clements. we know that at the site of the tom clements murder, here near colorado springs, they obtained at least some sort of evidence that they could potentially link to the car and that is something they are working on. they sent deputies down to texas to try to lock up that confirmation. they haven't told us if this evidence is shell casings, fingerprints, dna what have you, but they have something that they potentially hope to make a positive link on later today, carol. >> if this isn't bizarre enough, this may be connected to the murder of a pizza deliveryman? >> yeah, just a terrible case. last sunday, of delivery man, 27 years old. name is nathan leon, working an extra job, delivering pizzas to make more money for his wife and three girls, and he got an order to go to sort of a remote, industrial area to deliver a pizza, at that point he was murdered. his body police believe was dumped in a separate area of town. this could be linked as well. denver also said detectives to texas to try to confirm that. here is some of mr. leon's family members speaking about him. >> since sunday,

murder of 58-year-old tom clements at his colorado home tuesday night. dom nick joins us live from los angeles with the very latest details. dominic. >> hey there. that man in the mug shot was evan ebel, 28-year-old parolee. today he was named fort very first time as the suspect in the assassination of tom clements who was the prison system chief. officials are saying evidence gathered from the shootout scene provides a strong lead in the killing. shell casings match the same make and caliber of those found at the home of clements, adding to the other evidence that ebel's carried matched the description of the one spotted outside clements' house the night he died. ebel had a long criminal member, and a member of the white supremacist prison gang, considered one of the vicious groups operating. one of the attorney who defended the members said that only one method can exist for investigators to use if they want to find out if ebel was instructed to carry out the assassination. >> rounding up every single member that they know of of 211 within the entire colorado department of correction
