because is shut down today. with more on the bart strike, let's go to mike sugerman in san francisco with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: well, good morning, frank. i am at the closed civic center bart station. the escalators are running, but there is a lock on the gate. and no one is getting in on out of that station. let's talk about the economic issues. bart workers' contract ran out last night. they are asking for roughly an 8% raise over the next 3 years. bart had offered a 1% raise. 2% over four years. the 24% raise that workers wanted they knocked it down but it's a large increase. bart says they haven't gotten raises in five years. so that's the reason for the strike on economic issues. there's talk about safety issues after bart agents have been beat up and robbed in some of their stations. the station agents want more protection. but at the
