the bay area. there's also a big rock and mudslide in marin county on highway 101. tara moriarty joins us live from sausalito to let us know how it's impacting the morning commute and when it should be cleared. >> reporter: well, the traffic is backed up for quite a distance all the way to tiburon boulevard. it will be until probably 10:00 that two lanes are still gonna be closed until that time. you can see the bulldozers are busy chipping away at this rockslide boulder by boulder. they picked the rocks up and hauled them down the hill. this slide happened at 2:-- 2:40. it knocked over a tree. the chp has shut down the two sloel lanes while caltrans crews worked to clear the rocks. the crews are gonna take a better look to make sure there's no further danger to driveers. >> compared to a normal landslide, this is a rockslide. this is a portion of the hillside that fell away and came down. with it, it took away a large treate light pole. we have land we have to move, electrical and debris and trees we have to get out of here. it's pretty big. >> reporter: if you can take an alter

. >> reporter: sure. >>> marin county supervisors have declared a state of emergency following a week of heavy rain. the declaration issued yesterday allows the county to apply for state and federal aid. the cost of repaving just one levee in novato is expected to cost $1 million. the stormy weather has also washed out roads and taken down trees and power lines all across marin county. marin joins these other bay area counties in declaring or considering a state of emergency due to the december storm. >>> 7:09. the family of a south lake tahoe teenager who was found dead after he was reported missing last week, they are criticizing the police for not responding quicker. police say 14-year-old dejuan smith was fatally struck by a 50-foot tall tree that fell during last week's storm. the family reported him missing thursday night when he didn't come home after saying he was going to meet some friends. they say the police didn't start searching for dejuan until almost 24 hours later. the police say an officer did go to the area and searched the area described by witnesses. but they say ther

this evening? >> later this afternoon and evening. what happened in southern marin county was one for the record books. tiburon, larkspur, sausalito, coming in about 3.50 to 4 inches. the rainfall rates, 1.28 fell in 20 minutes in sausalito. thankfully, things have calmed down but there's not going to be much of a break. we do get cloudy to mostly cloudy skies. there's a little bit of patchy fog out there. but right here, our next system, that's going to give some cope peepious amounts of rain that -- copious amounts of rain that will come in. san anselmo has had 17 inches of rain this month. you start picking up another inch and a half to 2 and i think we have to keep an eye on things. the system will be in later this afternoon. 40s and 50s on the temps. kind of cold. this will give us rain tonight and into wednesday morning. then things should start to calm down. clouds, showers here in the morning. we'll cloud it up pretty fast. rain returns by this evening. 50s to very low 60s. i know highway 17 has been a tough one. any improvement? >>> we just got word that monterey chp said the

least and very heavy traffic in marin county. a lot of standing water. a suspected drunk driver somehow has lost control, ended up stranded on the bikeway of the golden gate bridge. let's bring in cara lui here who is helping us cover this bizarre incident. cara? >> reporter: well, sal, i just got off the phone with the golden gate bridge spokesperson. she tells me they've never seen anything like this before and this is certainly an accident that's going to take a long time to get cleared from this area. this doesn't appear to be affecting southbound traffic. what we've learned from the spokesperson, at about 5:30 this morning, there was a car speeding from the parking lot going way too fast for the conditions. it crashed through the concrete steel barrier as well as the steel gate going about 400 feet on the bridge before getting wedged on the sidewalk and the bike lane. now, the driver we're told was injured. he was taken to the hospital. the vehicle was a mustang. i don't believe you can see it from where we are being kept right now. but workers say they are waiting for dayl
