economy and the world economy, yet a new vote on brexit. perhaps this could spelt end of theresa may's time as prime minister. we are waiting for that vote in the next few hours. joining us now, kninic robertso live on downing street. >> reporter: good morning. four hours until that vote now. an emergency session of parliament. normally the mps would be back in their constituency on a friday. theresa may has tried to make this easier on herself to split this up vote into two parts. there's the divorce from the european part and there's the future relationship part. today they get to vote on the divorce part only. difficulty for theresa may is this is the bit that there's the most opposition too. backstop, the border between northern ireland and the republic of ireland. it went down to a historic 230 defeat in january, 149 votes against just a couple weeks ago and the assessment today is it will probably go down again because some of her own mps won't vote for it. the opposition is against it and a northern irish allies are against it too. what does this mean? if the vote goes dow

for a third time on prime minister theresa may's plan for exiting the eu. we go live to london with nic robertson who has been monitoring all of this. what happens today, nic. >> reporter: jessica, an emergency session of parliament, the mps working on a friday, that doesn't normally happen. in a couple hours time, they will make that vote. the key vote on what theresa may has done now because she's lost it so badly in the months leading up to this, that historic 230 vote loss in january, loss by 149 votes just 2 1/2 weeks ago. she has broken the vote down into two parts. so it is the divorce part and the future relationship part. that is the sort of overall leaving the european union bundle that britain faces. so what she's doing today is just taking the with respect to pa -- the divorce part. unfortunately this is the part that contains the backstop question, the relationship between northern ireland and the republic of ireland, that land border that britain would have with the european union. and that is the divisive issue. so at the moment it seems to be theresa may will not hav

even after prime minister theresa may offered to resign if her plan was pushed through. cnn nic robertson is live at 10 downing street in london with more. this continues to be a mess. >> reporter: it does. sort of became even more a mess yesterday. there were votes by the mps on what were called indicative votes. eight different possible scenarios of different brexit openings to what the prime minister has put on the table and you know what? every single one of them was voted down to give some perhaps margin to believe that parliament can get behind a couple of ideas here. but really what the prime minister has been saying all along that this is the deal she has is a compromised deal. the real question right now, now she's offered her leadership, she put that on the line, said i'm going resign, just get my deal through and you can have another leader to do the next phase of the brexit negotiations. remember this is just the divorce part. the future relationship we're talking about. she has said that. but despite offering her resignation, despite getting these cloudy but alterna
