practices led to the san bruno gas explosion. bob redell is live in san bruno with the details. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. state regulators are trying to find out how well pg&e kept records on the pipeline that used to be behind me that ruptured and explode and set a neighborhood on fire. it killed eight people, destroyed 38 homes. are there things about the pipeline that pg&e should have known that could have prevented the disaster or impossible for them to know because the recordkeeping was so poor. it's questioning investigators are asking and they hope to get answers. today is the deadline for pg&e to submit answers to the public utilities commission. the cpuc is concerned about pg&e's ability to keep records because of what came up during a federal investigation. pg&e records falsely indicated this section of pipeline was seamless when it was welded. leading the question to whether pg&e overestimated how much pressure this pipeline could with stand. the mercury news reports pg&e feels they are not getting a fair shake from state regulators. they are starting with t

seat, gas prices at $6 a gallon. really? some say it is possible by summer. bob redell is live with more. good morning, bob. >> reporter: good morning to you laura, or excuse me, marla. it seems like we are headed there. the price of gas is up there at this 76 station in san jose. it's $4.35 for a gallon of gas. that is a little above average if you look at the latest numbers from aaa. they are reporting gas is averaging around $4.22 a gallon. these prisz prices are up a quarter from a month ago. the recent spike caught the attention of uncle sam. president obama or the justice department set up a task force to show how they are affecting the price of oil. they are interested in seeing if there's illegal manipulation or fraud. oil is trading at over $110 a barrel. some experts think it's grossly overinflated and should be in the $65 to $70 range. they are making a prediction of $6 a gallon of gas by summertime. he has few reasons for thinking why that's possible. one is the dollar. right now, it's hovering near three-year lows as the dollar goes down. the price of energy goes up. co

tough decisions this morning to reduce its $30 million budget deficit. bob redell is live from a san jose station which is one of the oneses slated to be closed, bob. >> reporter: yes, good morning to you, brent. assuming the caltrain board of directors approves this proposal tomorrow to help close that $30 million budget deficit, these are proposals that would be making it more expensive to ride caltrain and less convenient. one of the conveniences would be having this station right here shut down. it's the capital station in san jose. if approved, the proposal calls for this station to be shut down starting in july along with two other stations on the peninsula further north. hayward park and bayshore. caltrain also wants to eliminate ten trains during the weekday, increase the one-way trip fare by 25 cents. parking fees hiked by $10 a month. among other things adding more stops for the express train. that means if you're a commuter and relying on those express trains to get you from san jose to san francisco, your ride will be longer because that train will have to make more stops

correspondent bob schieffer. and now from washington, bob schieffer. >> schieffer: and good morning again. welcome to "face the nation." senator sessions is in the studio with us this morning. senator chuck schumer is back home in new york. senator schumer, i want to start with you. because the president and the leadership in both houses has now agreed to a funding bill to keep the government running mstil october, but it includes $38 billion in cuts to federal programs. the problem is we really don't know where these cuts come. tell us what some of them are. >> well, let me say the compromise i think is a fair compromise. both sides gained. i think it will get broad bipartisan support. hie turning point in this was when the hard right, which wanted to focus the cuts... >> schieffer: senator schumer, before we get to that, tell me what some of the cuts are. >> well, the cuts are across the board. everybody gives some pain. we don't have the specific details yet. they're going to be published on monday. i'm not going to get into any of the specific details until then. but i can tell you th

another plane. bob orr in our washington bureau is following the story. bob, what can you tell us? >> katie it's an amazing story. it happened yesterday as first lady michelle obama was returning to washington from a trip to new york. a review of air traffic tapes shows that mrs. obama's plane got too close to a larger cargo plane that was flying just ahead as both of those jets were preparing to land at andrews air force base near washington. an f.a.a.rules require that the planes be separated by five miles. but an apparent mistake by a controller at a regional air traffic facility near d.c. allowed mrs. obama's plane to get within three miles not five miles of the larger cargo jet. that's technically too close even though we have to say the planes were never in any danger of collision. now controllers at andrews recognized a bigger problem, though. the large cargo plane, a c-17 like the one is shown here, could not exit the runway quickly enough to allow mrs. obama's plane-- a military version of a boeing 737-- to make a safe landing. at first controllers tried to slow down the

correspondent bob schieffer. and now washington, bob schieffer. >> schieffer: and good morning again. i hope your day is as beautiful as it is on this easter sunday in washington. we begin with senator coons and senator blumenthal in the studio. senator kirk is in chicago. welcome. gentlemen, the news from syria overnight is not good. government troops opened fire on tens of thousands of protestors. the estimates now are at around 120 people were killed over the last three days. that brings it to about 300 people who have been killed since the protest began five weeks ago. three members of the government have resigned. assad has promised more reforms, but the protestors say they will not be satisfied until he leaves. and so far, it looks like he's not. president obama issued another statement condemning the violence. he called on the government to change course now. senator kirk, you were one of those who advised barack obama to be aggressive about getting involved in libya. what do you think needs to be done about syria here? >> we should use the diplomatic weight and authority of the

investigation. >>> the native americans protesting the development of a burial ground do not have to leave. bob redell is live at the glen cove waterfront park with the latest developments. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, laura. men and women started camping out at the waterfront park in vallejo. this started late last week to protest the city's plan to develop this historic sight with a parking lot, restrooms and trails. this was until a federal mediator stepped in yesterday around 6:00 last night. the city agreed to let the people stay. the next step the native americans would like to begin negotiating with the city to halt the proposed project. they argue it is sacred ground, their church, if you will starting 3500 years ago, several california tribes used this sight as a village and burial sight. many remains are buried here. the protesters are confident they can convince the city to change their minds since they feel they have the backing of the people who live around here. >> you know, the local residents here have, you know, watched us for days as we have been out here pr
