i want to do everything i can to make sure we defeat barack obama. i just think a clear reagan conservative has a much better chance of defeating him than somebody who comes out of a massachusetts moderate background. >> schieffer: so what you're saying is that he would be the weakest candidate? >> well, i think it's very hard for him. i don't want to pick weakest or strongest. i think it's very hard for him to differentiate romney care from obama care and very hard for him to differentiate appointing liberal judges which he did when he was the governor of massachusetts. these are things that are going to come up. i think for the conservative movement it makes it more difficult frankly. that's why i think here in south carolina i'm probably going to win next saturday because as a georgia reagan conservative i fit much more comfortably with the average south carolina republican. >> schieffer: mr. speaker, i want to ask you about something you told us when you were out in iowa. you said flatly that mitt romney was a liar. i got to thinking about that.

as the republicans tell it, it is about barack obama. he didn't get to the white house last week, they will tell you, he has been there three years and he has made things worse. the nastiness of this republican primary season is but a preview of what is to come. our system has its flaws, we don't find out much about issues but we do find out a lot about the candidates, their backgrounds, character and how they respond to pressure, good things to know about those seeking the most powerful office in the world, but the best part is, we get to make our choice for whatever reason we choose. whether they ever heard what he said or even know who he was i get the feeling a lot of people will be thinking the way kevin white thought, comparing the candidates, not to the almighty but to the alternative. kevin white was 82. back in a minute. i am mark sanchez with a message for women. this is the actual sound of my heartbeat. >> schieffer: and that's all the time we have today. thanks for watching this special one hour edition of face the nation, an

remember who barack obama ran as the first time? he was the big anti-war -- he was going to gut everything, pull america out, pull america back. then he sat down and realized that, you know, if he was going to run for re-election, he couldn't, given the threats, do what we wanted to do. president obama in a second term as commander in chief, he said he was going to manage the decline of our military and focus all resources to grow the welfare state. this is a man who will do just as much damage to our military posture as ron paul would do. >> sean: last question. one of the things where i notice that the mitt romney -- john mccain did it yesterday, hit you on the issue of earmarks. now, the constitution does say that congress authorizes spending and money. >> right. >> sean: you defend the practice. you have been -- when asked about it, you didn't retreat from it because you think, what? >> well, i would say, you are right, the congress is authorized under the constitution to spend moan. jim demint, who was someone who focused on re
