to him, newt gingrich directly. we stau a little bit of that tonight in his speech. what they're going to talk about is the fact that newt gingrich is a lobbyist and somebody who lobbied as they say for freddie mac. when you look at the value of housing and how it's declined in the state of florida, they oar going to have after him on that. they're going to say he's out of touch with the republican party, that he called the republican budget right wing social engineering. something that almost every house republican voted for. so they're going to also say that he's unreliable, that he's erratic. that you need somebody who is steadier at the helm and who can be depended upon to beat barack obama, because in the end, it's going to be a race about who is best able to beat the president of the united states and romney has to show in these debates coming up, including the one with wolf on thursday, that he can take it to barack obama and go the long haul with him. and win for the republican party. that's what they want.

gingrich, newt gingrich beating mitt romney by 12 points. the chant is newt can win after three major contests. this race has three different winners. the most recent is newt gingrich. he joins us live this morning. mr. speaker, we joked about you coming on every week. here you are again. congratulations on a significant victory. >> david, thank you. the people of south carolina were and very hospitable. we had wonderful evening last night. >> what is the message that south carolina has sent and what does it mean for this race? >> i think they sent two really big messages which i wish the national establishment could pick up. the first is real pain. there's tremendous unemployment. people really are hurting, the number of people who walked up to me who have been out of work for a year, year and a half, people who want to work hard and have a better future, who want to provide for their families. that was really there. the second which i think no one in washington and new york gets is the level of anger at the national establishment. people w

newt gingrich wins and wins big. a double digit victory over governor romney in the first southern primary. >>> we proved here in south carolina that people power with the right ideas beats big money, and with your help we will prove it again in florida. thank you. good luck and god bless you. >> we will talk to the winner himself live this morning. also, how does the romney campaign now respond? >> this is a hard fight, because there is so much worth fighting for. >> the florida the next big test, how does governor romney connect with conservatives and make the case that he alone can beat president obama? we'll ask top romney supporter, the republican governor of new jersey, chris christie. then our special political roundtable as we wrap up the results from south carolina and analyze where this wild race goes from here, plus the president's standing two days before his state of the union address. how will he use this election year to advance his and dane. joining me the host of msnbc's morning joe, joe scarborough.

gingrich or mr. santorum or whoever else they might decide to select, they represent a fundamentally different vision of america. and it's not the bold, generous, forward looking optimistic america that i think built this country. >> is the different view of america, the optimism that the president so dramatically displayed in the state of the union, is that contrast part of what's helping to drive a more favorable view of the president? >> sure. especially when combined with what bill calls the sense of well-being that people are beginning to feel. there could be some exoginous event that put the economy back in the wrong place instead of this path to recovery. i think what the president has done and he's done it well, starting in that speech in kansas, is he's identifying with mainstream america, with ordinary middle class americans, with people who have gone through some tough times in the last few years. and he's campaigning for fairness. i think that is a powerful argument, especially this year.

but among the larger groups, gingrich, gingrich and gingrich. he keeps winning. here's one more. some thought there would be a gender gap. there was no gender gap. gingrich 38%, romney, 29%. he won among women. and the question, you can see here this is newt gingrich. that is a picture of a thumping. look at 2008 when john mccain barry carried the state. he won 33% to 30% over mike huckabee. tonight, newt gingrich winning convincingly. the question is, can he take the demographic support among tea party voters and evangelicals and bring it into a much more different state here. this is mccain the lighter red, mike huckabee the yellow. four years ago. romney got 31% last time but mccain won the state. again, a lot of lessons. you can discount because of the size of the gingrich victory or say governor romney has a problem as he moves on. >> we have ten days between now and january 31 when the florida primary takes place. you think how quickly things can change, only a week or so, not even a week or so ago, that cnn "time" magazine poll we did in florida showed mitt romney crushing

that's newt gingrich. >> mr. speaker, you were outspoken this week about your views of questions about your penl life. on this program in the past you've said they were fair questions. we've had those conversations. let me ask you more generally. if voters are going to consider your family families verse it is family values of governor romney, should they judge your conduct? >> sure, of course they should. and they should judge who i am. i think the people of south carolina did just that. they did it by a huge margin. and they repudiated the effort to go back and drag up things, particularly at the very opening of a national debate. last night on stage calista and i were together. we have a wonderful marriage. my two dauters and their husbands were there, tremendous supporters. my two grandchildren were there, my chief debate coaches. everybody knows i'm a 68-year-old grand father. i've done things in my life that i regret, i've had to go to god for forgiveness and reconciliation. i have a great relationship with

the president up 18 points on newt gig. >> wow. >> up fewer points on santorum than gingrich. >> gingrich is intensely unlikable. in the general election, what's going to happen is they are going to rip down obama as they have ripped each other down in the primaries. newt's got the negatives mitt's got the negatives. obama doesn't have them yet. it's encouraging that he has a huge lead on gingrich and sizeable on mitt. >> both of those men have been running against barack obama for a number of months. you see newt gingrich talking about obama constantly. in some cases there have been negative ads against the president where they talk about how bad obama care has been. he's getting hammered. >> i hear you. >> it's not been just praise for the president. last night there was a debate held in florida and there were some contentious moments. a lot of people thought this is the debate mitt romney one and newt gingrich lost. i disagree. i don't think there was there clear leader. it wasn't a great debate for gingrich. >> you're saying if newt gingrich doesn't wind up breaking somebody's ankles,

governor, you heard newt gingrich. he is painting mitt romney has the candidate of the republican establishment. what i'm wondering, what is the republican establishment these days? >> well, of course, the republican party is the conservative party of the united states. democratic party is the liberal party. becoming more liberal daily under the obama administration. but ours is a very diverse party. you have economic conservatives, social con conservatives. about 60% of the people who voted are, like me, evangelicals christians. lindsey touched on this. two thirds of them said in the exit polls their first criteria was to vote for the person who had the best chance to beat obama. i think that's what most republicans want. they're looking for the candidate that, as bill buckley used to say years ago, we want the most conservative person who can win in november. and newt was really helped by the fact that a lot of people who thought... of course, if we would have said three months ago, bob, that mitt romney was going to

gingrich? >> reporter: it's hard to believe they are so far down in the polls based on how the speaker is purporting himself. he was here this morning visiting with some of his campaign team in lakeland. they were trying to get people out today. he was not content to mail it in. he's got those four events today. he knows he will have some work to do coming out of florida, win or lose. we go three weeks without a debate. because they are so far in terms of money and advertising, he'll have to get out to nevada and try to build up support out there. he said he's going all the way to the convention. i think he's getting a little irritate. he said the race will go five or six more months, maybe sooner if mitt romney gets out of the r e race. he's still keeping a little humor. >>> joining me debby wasserman schultz. thank you for your time. >> thank you. >> let me start off with the feud between yourself and priebus. he compared the president to the captain of that cruise liner. you took issue with

bachmann, newt gingrich is making a very serious charge. he says that mitt romney is just too dishonest to be president. do you think he is too dishonest to be president? >> well, i am not going to weigh in on the veracity of any of the candidates or on the particular charges. that will be for the voters to decide and they will clearly decide here in florida on tuesday, but i think we are seeing intensifying occurring from both sides. this is going to continue throughout tuesday, but i think tuesday's results will be very significant across the nation and then of course from there then we will move into a lot of the caucus states. it is not over, but, again, this is just the opening salvo of the depth and intensity of what we will see going forward. once president obama embraces our nominee then we will never have seen anything like what is coming. >> well, i mean, but do you think that mitt romney is not a person of integrity? because that's what he says. >> i am not going to weigh in on that. that is between those candidate. i am not goin

newt gingrich. when is the election? a week from now. >> bill: newt gingrich is in for a fall? he is going down. >> i think he goal down. i don't know if he will lose the election. but i think he is going to -- i think it's going to get a lot closer than it is right now. romney is on the offensive. he finally went on the offensive at the debate. i think he will continue that. he will inundate gingrich with negative ads. it's going to have an impact. >> bill: dr. newport how do you see it based on the demographics of florida and your assessment it's a different situation in south carolina? >> different in some regards. actually, we look very carefully at the data. the percent of republicans conservative down there in florida is almost exactly the same as the percent in south carolina between 6 a% and 75%. not much more of a conservative state. it is an older state. republicans in florida are the oldest republics of any of the 50 states in the union. not a great shock but that's been one of gingrich's strengths there. 11%. it's estimated that republicans are going to vote are goi

gingrich has a loft baggage. flat-out they think that he can't be the nominee of the party, yet mitt romney can't seem to get the love. does that lead to a situation where it ends in the convention? >> i think that's a little bit of a fiction. what's going to happen newt gingrich and mitt romney are going to pick up a vast majority of the delegates. you have a bunch of delegates and you have a bunch of delegates. you don't deserve to be president. >> to process tends to consolidate. >> the third candidate in the race, they're kind of bruce willis in "the sixth sense," they're kind of dead but they're the only one that doesn't realize it. he does. he can get his 15% or 20%. but it's hard to see what would allow him to leapfrog back over gingrich to become the dominant choice. >> the weekly standard saying, maybe a draft out of the question. >> we haven't had a second ballot at the republican convention since '52? '52. in 1976, you had something like a convention that was on it's -- >> ronald reagan. >> not a ratif

to be worried about a gingrich nomination, because a gingrich nomination means we will change things and make the establishment very uncomfortable and demand change and real knowledge about where billions of dollars have gone, and if you look at these guys, they worrie candidate, and i think we sbentd to change the establishment and not get along with it. everything you said and read was said about reagan in 1980. one of his republican opponents described the reagan economic growth plan as, quote, voodoo, economics. some voodoo and it created 16 million new jobs. we came back and used the same model when i was speaker, and it created 11 million new jobs. so i am proud to be the outsider that scares them. maybe they should be shaken up badly, and one of the things florida voters get to decide, do you want somebody like romney or somebody that would profoundly change washington, and that's newt gingrich. >> you were out spoken this week about your views and questions about your personal life. on this program in the past you said they were fair questions and we had those conversations.

and gingrich does not. so gingrich will have to or santorum, if he can rally, have to win somewhere else. center do it fairly soon. i think this will go at leaste 'til early march on super tuesday. but before that time, gingrich would have to show that he can win in some other state. whether he can do that would be difficult because he won't have the money, as much money as mitt romney and he won't have i think more than one debate in february. ine think that may be the only schedule now. so it's going to be difficult for him to do it and so thisto does put romney a commanding position. romney is not making the case for himself this last week. this has been a systematic demolition of gingrich. he's not really saying, this is why i want to be president. he's saying, this is why this guy shouldn't be president. >> chris: juan, the landscape does change after tuesday. in february, there are fewer primaries. some of them tend to be in places you would think wouldpr favor romney, nevada with a big mormon populat

barack obama 50%, newt gingrich 39%. in that same poll, it showed governor romney in a dead even tie with president obama. how do you make that electability argument in the face of those numbers? >> the same way ronald reagan did. ronald reagan in december of '79 was 30 points behind jimmy carter. and he made the case that the candidate with ideas, the candidate with conservative values, the candidate who could articulate and defend his position was in the end going to be the best candidate. the country decided he was right. i think if you look at newt.org and you look at all the things we've developed, i can go toe to toe with president obama on big things. there are big differences. you know, romney care and obama care were this far apart. a pretty big debate. i'm for dramatically lower taxes. the president is for much higher taxes. i'm for less regulation. the president's for more regulation. i'm for strength overseas to defend israel and to defend the united states. the president's for weakness overseas. i think you
