, new hampshire. special western edition. good evening. mitt romney is now 2-for-2 in the race for the republican presidential nomination at this moment he is giving his victory speech here in manchester new hampshire. cbs projects he has won today's new hampshire primary with the help of both moderates and conservatives. ron paul is leading jon huntsman for second place. here's a look at the tabulated votes so far. 21% of the vote in, ron paul is running strong in second place with huntsman at 17%. our projections are based on the early vote count. on the polling that we did of voters after they cast their ballots. when we asked those voters what they were looking for in a candidate, 34% told us the ability to defeat president obama. and the majority of them, 59%, believe mitt romney is the candidate who can do it. we have our entire campaign 2012 team covering the primary. we'll go first to our chief political correspondent jan crawford who is with the romney campaign tonight. jan? >> well, scott, t

new hampshire. he owned new hampshire. secondly, being conservative in iowa is something very different than being conservative in the live free or die state. so what you see is that the folks in new hampshire where conservativism really lends itself to individual freedom, live free or die, economic issues especially and that's what people voted on here. they voted for romney. in iowa, conservatives voted for santorum because he's a religious conservative and a social conservative. >> douglas? >> yeah, i agree with margaret. the new hampshire conservative is a much more moderate variety than iowa. moreover, 44% of the overall vote in new hampshire were independents. so this electorate is a different electorate than the one we saw in iowa. more moderate overall. even if they had a different self-characterization and a much healthier percentage of independents who could vote in either primary and there was only one primary to vote in yesterday. >> and ron paul got a sizable amount of the vote yesterday because a lot of peopl

in new hampshire, he's invested all his effort in new hampshire. he has to do well, and if he does well, he can move on. he's got backers to be able to go to south carolina and florida. >> we'll come back to new hampshire in a minute, but i want to talk about florida. a quick refresher here, romney is personally liked. he is favored in new hampshire, south carolina is next and then you have the florida primary ten days later. here's the news. this is the poll out today, the first poll of likely primary voters in florida. take a look at the numbers. mitt romney there at the tip-top, 36%. gingrich at 24, santorum 16, ron paul and perry and huntsman. what do those numbers say to you? >> assuming rick perry does not do well in south carolina -- >> he's already there. >> he's going to get maybe 1 or 2%, if that. he didn't do well in iowa. he reassessed what he was going to do after iowa and decided to play again in south carolina. we'll see how he does in south carolina. if he leaves and if huntsman leaves, then the field is narrowed from 6 to 4. i thin

voting is now underway in new hampshire. in just ten hours results will start pouring in from the first primary of the 2012 race. the very first votes were actually cast this morning just after midnight in tiny dixville notch. here's the results. mitt romney and jon huntsman scored two votes each. newt gingrich and ron paul one each. rick santorum and rick perry, goose eggs. if all the polls are correct the question isn't whether mitt romney will win new hampshire, it's a question of how wide a margin. dan lothian is outside one polling place there in manchester. dan, how is the turnout? >> reporter: well, it's been pretty steady. we're at ward 1. you step inside where voters started showing up about 6:00 this morning. right now you see a few of the voters here. you haven't seen the long lines, but a steady stream of folks coming in here. this is a very busy ward. we take a look back to 2008, according to official als here, they had to call up the clerk's office and get the ballots. they got the ballots this time. perhaps th

the new hampshire primary. is there much movement among, say, the top rung of candidates. is romney suffering from these attacks, is santorum getting any kind of bounce or second look after iowa? >> ifill: you know, this is one of these things where you take the numbers that you see and put it up against what your eyes see. what my eyes have been able to see is that people are taking a second look at santorum. but when you look at the numbers, the latest wmur, which is the abc affiliate here in new hampshire, their latest poll out this evening shows romney still out way ahead with like 44% of the vote, followed by ron paul with less than half of that at 20%. and then there is this weird little fight for third place among jon huntsman, newt gingrich and rick santorum, each of them w7 or 8%. so when you look at the numbers, not much has changed. the question i find compelling about this primary is not some of who is ahead and who is behind, but what it is everyone's talk approximating about. what is moving these
