adrienne. and after they speak we'll open the room up to questions. melanie kirkpatrick, as many of you know, is a senior fellow along with her husband at the hudson institute, jack, at the hudson institute. before that melanie was for many years a leading editorial page writer at the "the wall street journal" editorial board. she wrote editorial and articles ranging on all subject from domestic do foreign policy. but in her role in deputy editor of the "the wall street journal," editorial page, she had keen focus on foreign policy and in particular really took to the issue of north korea human rights. like really no one else in the american media has taken to it. earlier in her career, she spent about ten years in asia working for the "the wall street journal" asia, in how hong kong and before that she had actually had a another gig she lived and working in tokyo, i believe. melanie received her bachelors degree from princeton university and the master's degree from the university of toronto. the book that melanie kirkpatrick has written is absolutely rivetting. it really reads mor

putting those up. fox5's melanie alnwick is live at the u street station with the latest. >> reporter: good morning. still no signs of those controversial ads yet. on thursday, lawyers for metro told the judge that the fbi was investigating a threat of violence if d.c. put up the ads. but the judge citing first amendment rights went ahead and ordered those signs be posted in metro stations by 5:00 today. the ads paid for by the american freedom defense initiative say "in any war between civilized men and the savage, support the civilized man. support israel, defeat jihad ." many people say they're offensive because they basically equate muslims with savages, citing concern from three u.s. security agencies, metro wanted to delay displaying the ads until after the protests in the middle east over the "innocence of muslims" film subsided. the sponsor sued to put them up immediately and won. riders have mixed feelings. >> in our civil society, the first amendment has the greatest protection. the government needs to protect the speaker and for those who say they want to engage in violence

going toward preventing major power outages. fox5's melanie alnwick is live at pepco headquarters with details of this plan. melanie, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, allison. after the june derecho that knocked out power millions around the area, many for more than a week, the governor developed a task force, and now it appears it's talking about passing some of the cost onto customers. given the outrage among customers when pepco asked for its last rate hike, it's a good bet the proposal isn't going to be popular with the public. governor o'malley said in his executive order creating the task force that upgrades to the power grid such as burying lines are necessary and urgent. he said the repeated and prolonged outages cause economic and health damages in the state. the governor outlined the recommendations of his tack force in a meeting with "washington post" editors and reporters. he said it would be about a dollar or two per month. it's not a done deal. the public service commission would have to approve the task force and their proposal. governor o'malley also told the "w

here, melanie. >> good morning, supervisors. as you know, the board of supervisors adopted resolution june 5th, 2012 authorizing the lease agreement between the city and county of san francisco and hudson properties for $24,400 square feet at 1455 market to be occupied by the san francisco department of environment. when i was last at the committee we only had estimates for tenant improvement costs. it was suggested we return in the fall with more tentative information and fundraising to offset the cost. today i would like to provide you with the details and ask for your support on amended resolution before you today. so since june our staff has worked with real estate to secure competitive bids for the needed improvements. the original budget was 2.7 million. through design decisions, we are using furniture and incorporating existing design features of the building, the department originally reduced that budget to $2 million, achieving a savings of over $700,000 from the original budget. even with the value engineering and fundraising efforts the department still had a sho

them. fox 5 melanie has more. >> good morning, tony, we are here, at 7th street and main street, at the top of historic old town laurel and i want to take a look at the trees behind me over here on 7th street. you can see what looks to be two branches but it has been split. this is a tree that hasn't come down yet. but it is going to at some point, whether by choice or by force. we're hoping that tree crews can get to it first. so that it doesn't damage the power lines and the poles that you see here. the city of laurel had about a dozen trees come down last night. including four of them that hit homes. and that includes a major one on conty road in laurel. very large tree came down. right about the height of the storm. 6:00 in the evening. and the house was made uninhabitable because of all of the damage to the roof. fortunately, there were no injuries. but people there did need to evacuate very quickly. and again, no injuries. but they were left with some very expensive repairs. >> that's pretty much the scenario we have. and a couple of other houses that were struck, the porches were

has struck again. they say another woman was grabbed and attacked from behind. melanie alnwick is live in falls church with the latest on this investigation. good morning. >>> there have been at least five other cases just like this one, incidents where young women were taxed from behind and groped. now, miss are comparing the suspect description. in several cases, the man they say was wearing a t-shirt and a red baseball cap and jeans. it was 4:20 in the afternoon near the intersection of south maple avenue and gibson street, a woman pushing a baby in a controller becomes a target for the a creep. >> the suspect walks up behind her. she was distracted talking on her cell phone. he walked up behind her, grabbed her, groped her very aggressively. he did hot let go of her until she yelled. she started screaming trying to get the attention of people. >> reporter: police say the suspect ran way. according to witnesses, he is about 5' 6", his pan wick a medium to dark complexion and short hair and skinny. this does seem to match the description. springfield cases. at least five victims ther

after dropping his brother off at school. fox 5's melanie aldwick joins us live now with more details. melanie. >>reporter: well, allison, brian glenn's family says they didn't realize he was missing until he didn't come home from football practice on monday night. they say that the school, w.t. woodson high school did send out one of those automatic notices that he was absent from classes on monday, but it went to a wrong phone number. now police are looking at surveillance video from this dunkin donuts here in fairfax circle because a receipt from this store was found in brian's car. it was date stamped 8:00 a.m. monday. now, family and friends did help police with a search. brian glenn has been missing for three days now going on four. they combed woods and paths in fasas park. that's a baseball field on picket road. that's where brian's bw jetta was found in the parking lot. inside friends also found an empty box from dunkin donuts along with pieces of jolly rancher candy and wrappers. brian's father says the radio was also tuned to a station that brian he believes wouldn't listen
