>> that's a great question, krystal. we've been dealing with this student visa issue ever since 9/11, as pete pointed out. that was an issue then. a number of hijackers were students. we've gotten better but this is a tiny loophole still to be closed. another concern is the fbi watch list. the cia watch list. it is not clear even though the elder tsarnaev was on an fbi list, cia list, it is unclear whether there would have been the ability to question him when he left the country and when he came back to the country. whether that was legally permissible. if it was legally permissible, it ought to have been done under these circumstances. if it wasn't legally permissible, then that is a change that needs to be made in the law. these hearings that will take place i think starting next week in the house and consequently the senate will be key to finding out the answers to those questions. >> and clark, some investigators have been looking into the mosque that tamerlan tsarnaev was attending in cambridge. i'm wondering while

>> you're right, krystal. we can show a lot of data showing the economy is not doing well for a lot of people. in 2013, -- you can have a lot of statistics showing the economy is not doing well for a lot of people. there's a lot of polls showing, you would think obama's ratings would have gone down in the scandals, the past week, two weeks, but the ratings have stayed pretty high in terms of approval. if you look at the polls, it's because people see the economy doing well. his numbers on the economy are going up, and near 50% approval on the economy. that's kind of propping him up. it gives him more influence in washington. in the second term, every day you're moving toward irrelevant. >> and there is still another election coming up, 2014. let's talk more about that. i think the argument that republicans made wasn't that the economy wouldn't get better under obama. it was that the economy would, of course, improve slightly, naturally, because the markets would shift and eventually the economy would get bette

the issue of sexual assault, especially against women in the military as krystal is saying is very much a special case and a terrible case. it also fits into a wider problem in accountability in the military which is, a, an institution in american life that is so widely respected because of its great service. the ultimate sacrifice that our troops give us for our freedom. that sometimes, that has turned into among some, not most of the military but among some, a culture that basically wants to exempt itself from the normal accountability that we expect in american life which includes independent courts and oversight. on this issue but also in allegations of torture and waterboarding and what happened at abu ghraib where we saw some low level people take the hit but not a full accounting of what went on and a full set of actions and responsibility. not only within the military justice system but potentially outside of it. and we've talked about that on this show previously. one of the reform is women need to be able to go to civilian courts and have their day in court and not just be sub

with sam and krystal at times. there's a movement happening now on the idea of national service. when you have a millennial generation that has trouble getting jobs, but also wants to be something larger than themselves, is sick of hearing baby boomers say follow your fashion, it's all about you. it will be helpful, the nice chart in joel stein's story of each generation, you have that greatest generation. what distinguished that generation? they all had to be involved in some form of service that was larger than me, me, me. that's what we're lacking in our society today. not only the feeling that you should do it, but even the opportunity to do it. >> yes. >> to join corps, whether it's a conservation corps or legal corps or health corps or the marine corps or the coast guard. that should be an opportunity and an expectation of each new generation. >> i think that's right. and it leads me to another point about millennials which is another positive thing. milennials are nice. they actually are willing to be accepts of other people and to sort of be more positive than my generati
