. meanwhile on capitol hill, the u.s. senate commerce committee has already launched its own inquiry. jay rockefeller is asking the port authority for answers. he has set a january 15th deadline for a response. new jersey's democratic senators cory booker and bob menendez called the revelations "troubling" and said they will both be monitoring the senate commerce committee's inquiry. i want to bring in mark murray, "new york times" political reporter who covers governor chris christie for the "times." and as we have come to find out, steve is also an expert of sorts when it comes to new jersey politics. michael, let me start with you. we know that david willstein has been testifying now for about 30 or 40 minutes. at this point, has he said anything noteworthy or does he continue to plead the fifth? >> my understanding is that he has continued to plead the fifth to essentially make the case that this is not the right venue for him. i think that's problematic -- of course, legal, but problematic for him and the governor. this is a moment when governor christie is arguing for disclosure for

washington bridge lane closures. the u.s. attorney's office in newark has served subpoenas on governor chris christie's campaign committee and the new jersey state republican party seeking documents from both related possibly to the bridge closures. the bridge lane closures. two lawyers for the political organizations have confirmed the subpoenas to nbc news. joining me now, steve kornacki who is the host of msnbc's "up with steve kornacki. what is the significance of these subpoenas going out to the political campaign? this seems to really be a broadening of the scope of the investigation. >> yes. so the basic story here is we knew the u.s. attorney's office was looking into the allegations from the mayor of hoboken about whether the christie administration linked sandy aid with a development project in her town. now this is the first indication, the first confirmation really that the u.s. attorney's office is also looking at the question of the george washington bridge lane closure scandal. so it is the u.s. attorney getting involved in that. and the immediate question that raises is

former attorney general of the state of new jersey. chris christie calls him general samson. when u.s. senator frank lautenberg died and chris christie needed to pick somebody to take that u.s. senate seat and become a u.s. senator temporarily until a special election could be held, chris christie tapped jeffrey ciasa. when governor christie started his term as the chairman of the republican governor's association, "david samson was among the group of close advisers who went to arizona with chris christie in november to the aga meeting." "as a sign that samson is seen as important to christie's national run for office." david samson and chris christie are very close, when it came out in those subpoenaed documents, this e-mail from david wildstein, "david samson is helping us to retaliate." that was a big deal in terms of how high the scandal goes and how close the scandal gets to governor chris christie. and on the day that governor christie apologized and he said he was humiliated and called his deputy chief of staff stupid and he said the other people involved were stupid and deceit

understood that this was an interview that was going to attract attention from the u.s. attorney's office. this was going to attract attention from the authorities. she wanted it to attract their attention. this is a woman who is very confident in the story she is telling. she is very confident in the authenticity of the diary entries that she shared with us, of the other documents she shared with us. i think she is very confident there are people who will back her up on this. again, in one way it's a matter for the u.s. attorney's office to deal with right now. the question is will there be further statements from kim guadagno, further attempts to sort of clarify, because she seemed to acknowledge the other day that there was some conversation between her and dawn zimmer. will there be a further attempt to explain what that conversation was, or will the governor's office, kim guadagno will content to let this rest right now in the hands of the attorney. that has been the hope of chris christie's allies. if you talk to them in new jersey, their hope has been this becomes less publi

immunity from the u.s. attorney, from the new york authorities and new jersey authority, you'll get the answers to your questions. that's a very subtle hint. we've got a story to tell here, but we need immunity to tell it first. in short, is david wildstein the john dean of this affair? >> yeah. >> one other clue that got overlooked yesterday, those documents that have been turned over by wildstein, those e-mails, those incredibly damaging e-mails, they have all those deletions because the subpoena only called for documents responsive to the traffic closures, to the issue at question. well, while there are all those deletions, one of the things wildstein did include was references to a meeting that was proposed between christie and david samson, christie's appointee to the port authority. a few days before bridget kelly writes that e-mail saying time for some traffic problems in ft. lee. so why did he include the references to a meeting between christie and samson in this -- in response to the subpoena? that's the question i've been talking to a lot of people in the state house toda
