. brian flores has more information about the man believed to be responsible. >> it remains a very tense situation. it's in the early-morning hours in sydney. we continue to watch the live news feed from this cafe in sydney. it appears another hostage has managed to escape. that brins the total number who escaped to six. at this point, they continue to have some type of contact with the gunman, authorities do, and they hope this ends peacefully. we understand that authorities know who the gunman is. through several media reports he's identifieded at 51-year- old man monice. he's a self-described cleric. he has a criminal history including reports of being accessory to murder of his ex- wife and say he's originally from iran. it remains unclear if he has ties to isis or if a lone wolf. police say he entered the normally busy cafe during the morning rush hour roughly around the 9:30 a.m., local time there and took an unknown number of hostages. we also understand that of a they escaped, he became more agitate and started yessing -- agitated and starting yelling. >> our approach is to

this year. brian flores is in alameda with the reasons why. this will be alarming to a lot of people. >> reporter: it might be. you go to any pharmacy in the bay area just like this one here in alameda and you see the signs saying you should get your flu shot. some promoting no cost flu shots. while that still may be the case, the cdc did a sampling of those who got the flu from october to november, what they found was that the flu vaccine for this year may not be a good match to combat this current strain. this was through an vig sent out by the cdc earlier to doctors across the country. again, they sampled those who got the flew. what they found was that the vaccine was only good for half of the cases suggesting that the virus is different than what was planned for. they say the vaccine is typically created based on which storms of the flu spread the year previous. now, the cdc says, however, it appears it may not effect this year's flu, they still recommend getting the flu shot because it will offer severe protections from severe complications like hospitalization and death

berkeley over night, brian flores is right along shattic avenue, looks like many businesses cleaning up this morning. >> good morning to you. it started off as a peaceful protest, this is the aftermath of what happened last night and early this morning. several businesses, are damaged this is a mcdonald's on the corner of university and shatick. people wanting to cause problems last night. as we speak, though, there are a few workers putting up plywood to protect the businesses, this is law enforcement actually forced to clean up after a lot of damage. this is what the chp sent out through twitter last night. several cars were damaged in the protest, these pictures show broken windshields and dents if not clear, exactly where the cars were damaged but they say they face a large crowd trying to shut down highway 24. they say 8 people were arrested and 2 officers also suffered minor injuries. this was the scene at a radio shack, ktvu was there this morning several windows boarded up from people breaking the glass last night, we're also told several electronics were stolen from this store.

of people. but chevron is telling the public, don't worry. brian flores is live in richmond to tell us why. >> reporter: chevron says what many people saw here in houston. that flairup you saw from the refinery is considered normal. there was no impact to the community. but you didn't know that initially. it certainly raised a lot of concern for several people. several emergency responders in fact got several calls about that concern. now it all happened around 7:00 last night. many of the community and even commuters who saw it along 580 obviously worried after seeing that larger than normal flair come out of the refinery. of course the refinery fire of 2012 still on the minds of many. according to chevron and officials with the county, they call this normal operations in a statement by chevron. it says in part we have a process unit that needed to be depressurized. the flair is part of a safety system which enables us to safely shut down a unit. while the word of it being normal is good news for those in richmond, the scene in the skies above their neighborhood was certainly alarm

. there's a new program and new safety measures. brian flores has more. >> reporter: good morning to you. stolen bikes, not just a problem on b.a.r.t. but throughout the bay area. that means adding more bike lockers. but also educating cyclists how to keep their bikes secure. now, representatives from bike east bay will be at b.a.r.t. stations until the summer of 2015 in the early-evening hours, sharing tips, handing out theft materials and passing out u-shaped locks. those when installed properly keep your bikes safer than cable locks. the plan is to expand more secure places to keep bicycles secure by adding more bike lockers, spaces and bike stations like you see at ashby, embarcadero, downtown berkeley and fruitvale. cyclist he spoke to said he hopes b.a.r.t. puts safety on the thefts. >> in my case, for example, i use two locks and my locks cost more than the bicycle. in the past, i had the bicycle stolen. so i had some experience. >> reporter: next month, b.a.r.t. plans to open another bike stakes at the 19th street -- stakes at the 19th street station. there is also a station at t

not everyone is on board with the plans. brian flores joins us live from the flower mart to explain why. good afternoon, brian. >> reporter: good afternoon to you. speculation had been brewing about whether the flower mart would stay, go. we now know a deal with the flower mart and the developer dill roy will keep it here for years to come. the announcement came at 11:00 this morning. the flower mart will remain. all vendors and tenants will be offered a five-year extension of their leases at the current rate and tenants will be offered new space in the new facility once it's complete. now, in terms of design, the wholesale flower market will be underground. there will be flower retail shops on the street level on 6th and brandon and office space above the retail shops. the executive vice president of the flower mart says this is a win-win moving forward. >> it's a historic time for us. we are moving forward with plans on remaining here on the site. we're gonna reinvest back into the flower business in the future and maintain this flower business in san francisco. >> reporter: back

[chanting [brrk. >> reporter: close to 600 people took to the streets of berkeley for a second straight night. protesters are angry over the recent deaths of unarmed black men at the hands of police. early on, things were peaceful here. but then some in the crowd got out of hand. vandalizing stores, setting bon fires and smashing patrol cars. at one point, protesters clashed with chp officers on highway 24, briefly shutting down the freeway. there was also a disturbing attack on a pr

for the missing air asia plane will expand the search after a second day turns up nothing. brian flores has more. >> indonesian officials asking the u.s. for help. it still needs to be determined where the u.s. can best be of assistance. in the meantime, the indonesian government is still calling this a search and rescue mission. a c-130 plane from singapore joined the search as the search for 8501 flight has turned up nothing. the airbus 320 jet carrying 162 people aboard was first reported missing on sunday. but now two days into the search and time is quickly running out on finding survivors. >> we pray for them. we realize the worst thing that may happen. >> the search area is 240 by 240 nautical miles. this morning, crews found what looked like an oil slick in the java sea. but their remains conflicting reports that indonesian reports that it's not the plane. >> we're confident in our ability to fly people and continue to be strong and continue carrying people who never before do fly -- could fly before. >> last time air traffic controllers heard from the flight was 42 minut

origin in the richmond -- live and work in the richmond area. brian flores is joining us from richmond. >> reporter: hi, pam, good morning. chevron says what many people, residents, and commuters saw last night was normal operations. didn't have any impact to the community. if you didn't know that initially, what many people saw was concerning. this all happened just after 7:00 last night. even the commuters -- the refinery fire of 2012 is still ever -- in part we had a process unit that needed to be depressurized. the flair is part of a safety unit. >> we were monitoring the community. we were making sure there were downwind. that there were no odors. >> and what did you find? >> we didn't find anything. >> a chevron spokesperson tells ktvu news the flair and white smoke that appeared was water vapor. in flairing conditions, this is normal practice to release that amount of quantity of water vapor to assist with the flair quality. we also contacted a chevron -- while this is considered normal operations, it remains unclear what caused the unit to be depressurized in the first

many emergency responders are telling everyone to get ready now. ktvu's brian flores, you are in san rafael. they are preparing out there at this moment, brian. >> reporter: i am, dave. so are several other people in marin county. as you know. marin county certainly gets pounded during any major rain storm. that's gonna be the case in the next couple of days. as steve said, it will be a widespread storm. we're live in one of several locations throughout marin where people can come by, get sandbags to help stop flooding. this one off union and flood next to the whole foods. as you can see, with the amount of sand left which is not much. it looks like people have heeded the advisory and are getting ready for the upcoming storm. forecasters say the amount of rain that is expected to tall will be quite a bit. steve mentioned up to 3 inches possibly in urban areas up to 8 inches in the mountain areas which is why the national weather service has issued a storm advisory. we have seen city work crews to downtown clearing out drains. we did speak 0 to some in oakland who are getting ready. >

head over to brian flores. this is highway 24 in lafayette. you can see typical traffic on a tuesday. it starts getting busy as you go to the caldecott tunnel. once you get past that traffic is clear as you approach the bay bridge. this is a really good indicator of how traffic looks like in the morning. about 10-12 minutes to get you across the span. chp says there is a wind advisory on the bay bridge as well. so be aware of that. taking a look at the south bay traffic looking really good this morning. really from 82 to down to 280 but that traffic seems to have cleared up. things are looking good on the peninsula. there is a disabled vehicle on san mateo after the bridge. but that is keeping traffic a little slow and go this morning. over all not too bad. there is also reports from what i'm hearing northbound 880 as you approach fifth and embarcadero. we are taking a look at 17 disabled cars. we'll take a look at that coming up in our next traffic report. steve, it's going to be cold out there today. >>> it will indeed. the dry air is on the way. the cold air will arrive ar

[ foreign language ] >> he said like he heard a big sound, like a bomb. >> reporter: it may have sounded like one, but it actually was mother nature, this time coming in a 90-foot eucalyptus tree that came crashing down onto the back of a home in union city. >> i heard a large thud sound. 30 seconds later, the ground shook and my whole room shook. >> reporter: the tree fell just after 4:00 this morning in what is a senior care home off tree fry court. five patients and three caretakers were in the home at the time, with the tree landing just inches away from two of the patients' beds. >> took the roof out and the walls and the fence and just narrowly missed the occupants, just very fortunate situation that no one got killed. >> reporter: with the amount of rain and wind these past 48 hours, alameda county fire officials say they respondedded to numerous calls of trees following. >> another one fell into a building in the castro valley, a large oak tree. we figure we'll have more of t
