. >>> now to ktvu's john fowler who is live in berkeley as well where the demonstrators are on the move once again for a third night in a row. where are they right now? >> reporter: we are walking down dwight way in berkeley. 300 protesters have been making a lot of noise and walking down, blocking two different intersections that we have been at. they plan no violence for tonight. but they also don't condone it either. if something were to happen, they say that is part of searching for justice on the streets. the protesters had set up demands to try get the police department to do the right thing. one of the things we heard over and over from them is that they have determined that there is no point taviolence but -- to violence but if there is damage to businesses or people get hurt, that is just part of what they are doing. the police department is very upset because they weren't given notice about where the march would go so they could help facilitate a peaceful protest. we have several hundred people marching. men a are students. and we will stay with this till it wraps up. for now

ktvu's john fowler joins us live along the water front where it is coming down now. the rain combined with the tides could be a bad combination. >> reporter: it could be and some folks saying it wasn't so bad they weren't outside. the bad news is it is still raining and that is bad for any urban area and we have 30,000 people without power. some of them are coming back online and folks can now see us. the embarcadero, which was a problem because of high tides and winds, faired pretty well. >> reporter: we took these pictures at high tide but the winds stayed calm and did not kick up the feared big waves. the rain, though, at times came down hard. for many the storm lived up to its billing. flooding, huge areas of the city without power. >> pretty bad. >> reporter: many businesses shut down. the power outage kept workers on the streets. >> no one knew what to do. go home. got beers. and we will relax. >> 10s of thousands of res dependents without electricity since before dawn. 7 hours later long time san franciscan said she couldn't stay home any longer. >> no food. n

this is john fowler's report on the incredible endurance and determination of jim and jennifer stopal. >> i just figured that we would stay here and die and not do anything or try to do something and die that way. so we did what we could and tried to get out of there. >> reporter: last tuesday the stopals turned north from their intended route and chose highway 299 to cut through the snow bound sierra. they drove the two lane road signs declare the back country highway through this path in the warner mountains. migrating geese are among the few living things able to survive the harsh winters here. this part of the high desert appears more like antarctica. temperatures plunged to minus four and never got above minus two. their truck bogged in the snow in an area highway patrol described as the middle of nowhere. the family stayed in the truck running the engine. but in five days and nights no one drove by. >> just really concerned about freezing to death, or starve to death or if anybody was going to come get us. we were just worried about our family being worried about us. >> reporter

now to john fowler who is in the east bay hills where the winds have been strong throughout the day, john. >> well, they really have, frank. they haven't eased off at all and the temperature is still really cold. but, because despite the fact that we've had some winter rains, these trees battling these winds are a drought stressed. >> gusty winds collapsed this big uric uric tree. fortunately, no one seriously hurt. high winds whipped branches into power lines across the bay area. this incident in samona county, arking power lines caused widespread power outages. we saw pg&e crews positioning in advance of the wind storm to places they had predicted would be trouble. >> our computer modeling and our in house meteorology department, that allows us to identify in advance what areas are most likely to be hardest hit. >> many trees fell at higher elevations where winds were strongest. some even at sea level, like this one near the oakland airport couldn't withstand the winds. no one was hurt here either. it wasn't all bad news. tourists flocked to the headlands and took in for ever views
