speaking, governor cuomo, will be speaking at 6:45. and there's actually a rally that's going to begin right now outside of the corrections facility where he was. right now let's go to adam reese who's on the ground outside of the medical center. adam. >> reporter: just to recap, david sweat was shot just two miles south of the canadian border. that is just five miles north of where we are. 48 hours after richard matt was shot and killed here. now, i just spoke with the malone police officer. he's right behind me. i asked him, how do you feel? he said he is incredibly relieved. he lives just three quarters of a mile from the location where sweat was apprehended. he said his wife is incredibly relieved. he had three kids at home. they were worried for three weeks. now there's some sense of relief. and julie molnar is joining me. not only does she live across the street from three jails, but she was here at the ambulance arrived. we have the video. tell me a little bit about what you saw as the ambulance arrived. >> well, i saw all the law enforcement people pulling up very quickly and b

believe they are close to closing in on sweat. governor andrew cuomo of new york is expected to address the situation later in this hour. if it happens in this hour we will bring that news conference to you live. joining me now, nbc news correspondent john yang. john, can you give us the latest? >> reporter: here's what we know, chris. we know that new york state police major charles guess told us in a statement that at 3:45 this afternoon, a tactical unit doing a search through a wooded area -- through an area near here encountered someone, shot him and killed him. they believe that man to be richard matt. now, law enforcement officials speaking on background tell nbc news that it was a customs and border patrol tactical unit that carried that out. we spoke, or actually wptz our nbc affiliate in plattsburgh spoke with a witness nearby who said they heard a single shot which suggests it was not a shoot-out, but a single shot a shot from a tactical unit with a tactical rifle taking out, they believe, richard matt. the officials also tell us that there was evidence in the area tha

of the hour. we want to let everybody know that we are waiting for governor cuomo to appear at that podium and speak about the capture of david sweat who you see on the left side of your screen. this was a picture taken right after he was apprehended. i want to go back now to jim kavanaugh. jim, we just heard that perhaps he's feeling some -- david sweat may be feeling some relief right now. that's what zeke unger told us who is a bounty hunter. what are your thoughts? what do you think he's experiencing right now? >> well, just to build on what john said, i agree. i think he is feeling absolute relief. you know, i was special agent in charge in the birmingham division of atf when we had the bombing of eric rudolph. he killed a birmingham officer. he killed people in atlanta in the olympics. we chased him in the mountains of north carolina for five years. i mean, the fbi, the atf, the u.s. marshals, the state police agencies of georgia, north carolina, tennessee, bam balabae were all involved. it took us years. it reminds me of that and other manhunts of cop killers and so forth. we

was earlier this week governor cuomo reported that a shotgun was stolen or reported missing from a cabin where one of the suspects were believed to have been hiding out. so the reporting that we're getting now is that this customs team stumbled upon the suspects. one of the suspects wa was armed with perhaps a shotgun and the shooting took place, again, richard matt shot and killed. the hunt on for david sweat in this wooded area. as you can see from some of this video, the enormous response you know there have been reports that as many as a thousand law enforcement officers have been involved in this 21-day search flooding that area which is now about 35 miles north and west of the prison where they escaped en route to canada. and the question is had they been hiding out in just camps and cabins all this time? have they been moving about just on foot? it appears to be so. the question now is will they be able to track down david sweat, and will they take him dead or alive. >> a witness who saw the activity near the richard matt shoot. we are the thinkers. the job jugglers. the up

new york state police and new york governor andrew cuomo just gave a public briefing on those prison escapees in upstate new york. the bottom line here is that one of those two escapees was found by police today and then shot and killed by police today. richard matt police say, was armed with a 20-gauge shotgun when they found him, when he was confronted by police in the woods near the town of malone new york. so, richard matt the man on the left here he tonight is dead. david sweat, the man on the right, is still on the loose. police say the search for the second man continues tonight. we'll keep you posted as we learn more on that manhunt tonight. but again, the headline here is that one of the two escaped prisoners from dannemora maximum security prison in upstate new york has not just been found, but tonight is dead at the hands of police after they found him armed with a shotgun, they say. this is after 21 days that these two guys have been on the loose. richard matt's fellow escapee, david sweat, still out there tonight, and the manhunt continues. >>> beyond that very dramatic

cuomo is on his side of the lake and we on our side of the lake are pursuing any legitimate leads that law enforcement feels might lead us to getting these two dangerous guys locked up and behind bars where they belong. so we're throwing out of our resources at it both in new york and vermont. and hoping that we get these guys quickly before they harm anybody. >> is there any indication that they could have had access to a boat or gotten across the lake? >> well, there's no indication of that. we have no evidence of that. what we do know is that the only intention that they expressed based upon good sources is that they thought if they headed to vermont it would be cooler that new york was going to be hot with police presence and it would be a better place to hide out until things cooled off. so obviously we're taking that seriously. we enhanced our marine presence on lake champlain. we're doing surveillance in low areas in vermont camps, cabins. we're doing everything we can to find these guys. >> above governor, they had a good head start given they were cited according to a couple o

their dramatic jail break in upstate new york. today governor cuomo said that richard and david sweat had help in their escape from new york's largest maximum security prison. state police, the department of corrections, federal marshalls and the fbi are working this case. $100,000 reward is being offered for information leading to their capture. authorities believe the pair fled clinton correctional facility sometime friday night or saturday morning. both used power tools to drill holes behind their beds while dummies, they stuffed clothes, used them as decoys. then cut into a 24-inch steam pipe according to cuomo shimmying through the pipe. they eventually cut another hole from inside that pipe to exit it and then the two navigated another series of tunnels until they exited a manhole outside of the prison about a block away. so the escapees even took the time to taunt their pursuers, leaving a escape route, post-it note. it showed a racist image as well as the words "have a nice day." on the "today" show this morning governor cuomo had a message to the men about that post-it

escape from the clinton correctional facility. here's new york governor andrew cuomo this morning. >> they could be anywhere in the country by now. one of the individuals had experience in mexico. they could be headed down south. the prison is about 25 miles from canada. they could have been headed that way. so we're covering all bases. we also have a very intensive search stim in that area. there's a chance they didn't have transportation or haven't acquired an automobile. >> john yang is live outside the prison in dannemora, new york. what's the latest on the search for the two guys? >> well jose as you heard the governor say, they have extended alerted officials in canada, in mexico in the southwest, next door in vermont. they have about 250 state and federal law enforcement officials conducting this search here in new york state. and they say that their main goal is to get these two guys back behind prison bars. these are very dangerous individuals. the state police ask that the public take no chances, make no efforts to apprehend them and report any suspicious activity. if yo

. with that kind of hopeful context in mind what do you think of governor cuomo coming out now saying another priority will be having an inspector general independent investigation of how this all happened? >> yeah. absolutely. i mean this is about policy. it's about procedure and the people. and we're going to look to see where it broke down. we are hearing that these prisoners doing, had everything from boom boxes to barbecues. this is a maximum security prison. they're there basically for life. i don't know what the inspector general -- >> re-up. >> how did they have this lavish life style inside prison walls? and did -- did the music block all this noise that these guys were making? was this a whole collaborative effort on everybody's part? people in the prison know an they're not going to help you out because it's a death sentence for them if somebody else even thinks they talked to the cops. >> gave any information. >> right. they're not going anywhere. we'll move you to another prison. they're like what are you doing here? >> that's exactly right. they figure it out soon enough

. authorities are conducting door-to-door searches in dannemora, new york. new york governor andrew cuomo and vermont governor basically held a press conference about the search. they announced the massive manhunt would be expanding to vice president. the governor saying there was information the men might be headed there. >> i'm going to be careful what i confirm this is an ongoing investigation. what i can tell you is we have information that suggests that they thought new york was going to be hot. vermont would be cooler in terms of law enforcement, and that a camp in vermont might be a better place to be than new york. authorities say the vermont and new york state police will be of course in close contact. they're asking vermont residents to report any suspicious activity at remote seasonal camps. we bring in john yang. john, obviously there's a trade-off there. authorities are putting the information out to get people to help with the search. if the guys have access to any media they know their vermont camping plan is out of the bag >>well that also could sort of force them to stay put

to governor cuomo, sweat told authorities he and matt split up five days prior to capture because he felt his older partner was slowing him down. and sweat has implicated prison employee joyce mitchell but not gene palm who had also provided them with painting supplies and tools. >> he told investigator palmer had no involvement in the escape. it was just mitchell, he and matt. >> and a lot of people are asking now, why would this cop kill killer, already serving a life sentence cooperate at all? joining us now, why does he talk? >> well he's kind of stuck between a rock and a hard place. the prisons aren't going to be friendly because he's going to lose all his privilege and the guards are not going to be dealing with him either. so he's going to have to figure what works best for him. if it was me i'd side with the guards at this point. >> walk us through how it works. do you immediately start asking the big questions? or you warm him up? and how does his medical condition effect it. >> they have to worry about how many drugs he was on beforehand. but getting back to your first que

cuomo said the case is far from over. >> we have a lot of work to do investigating both the cooperators and making the point that that cannot happen and if that happens, that will be fully prosecuted. and number two the overall systems of the prison what went wrong, and are there systems we should change? >> nbc's miguel almaguer joins us. miguel, the system is wondering what if any, cooperation he will provide. >> he is still listed in critical condition. as you know he was shot in the torso, the upper body area. the hospital will only tell us he's still listed in critical condition. they won't go into any details about his injuries. and doctors won't even tell us if he's speaking to medical officials here. the district attorney's office has told us that sweat has not spoken to investigators, as you mentioned. of course a very key piece of information is determining not only how these two men were able to escape from prison but how they were able to evade police and stay on the lam for three weeks' time. investigators have many questions for sweat, but right now we know he
