interviewed the guard on sunday for 14 hours. for the latest let's turn to cnn's sara ganim in dan know morrah. >> reporter: john and christine, it seems the investigation is now focused on the paintings that richard matt was making behind bars. we already know prison seamstress joyce mitchell received one of those paintings. she was charged with helping those two men escape by providing them the tools they used to break out, and now we've learned that 57-year-old male prison guard gene palmer also on the honor block where those two men were housed he received one of those paintings as welch his attorney telling cnn that that is the focus of the investigation into him. the focus of the interviews that police searched his home. they wanted to talk to him about that painting about his relationship with those two men and with skbrois mitchell as well. he had daily and constant contact with them. because he was a guard, he tried to have a good working relationship with the inmates for safety reasons. his attorney told me 100% he denies any knowledge of the escape plan. take a listen to what

enforcement sources say this is a very credible threat that they are following. sara ganim with me on the ground outside the maximum security prison where these two men escaped two weeks ago. today, what are you hearing? >> reporter: we know this is a very active search. we know they have k-9 and aviation helicopters in the air, k-9s on the ground. hopefully trying to pick up the scent of these two men. we know that earlier in this search when it was closer to the prison they had picked up the scent of these two men but then they lost it. the trail went cold for several days as authorities here began to scale back slightly and were no longer doing grid searches in this area but instead were following trails out of town. then after that, the next credible lead that came wasn't for several days. it wasn't until tuesday of this week when they learned that there were two possible sightings last weekend, saturday and sunday in two towns near the border about 30 miles east of where they're searching now. what's interesting, being on the ground and looking at the situation, what's interesting ab

wo men broke free more than two weeks ago now. so let's get right to cnn's sara ganim she's ganim. what can you tell us sara? >> good morning, carol. this owl's head area near the mountain view area is where police and searchers converged last night. more than 100 police vehicles we saw. we saw them on all terrain vehicles tactical teams searches through wooded areas. this is the adirondacks, so it's very rural. a lot of unoccupied cabins, vacation homes, hiking trails biking trails. the things police and searchers have been focused on since the beginning of this now more than two-week search. they converged on this town 30 miles west of the prison where those two inmates escaped. there's clear walking trails and roads that lead from the town of dannemora where that prison is to this area. the franklin county district attorney telling me this morning that on saturday a witness who was checking on an unoccupied vacation cabin saw a man who ran out the back door of the cabin, had clearly been burglarized. law enforcement went in, found it to be a credible possible sighting of one of

walk away from the maximum security prison. let's go to sara ganim live in owl's head new york. sara there was news yesterday that we have a very specific nugget and a very specific something that was left behind. tell me what that is. >> reporter: that's right. a source that was briefed on this investigation told cnn's deb feyerick that they found boots and other provisions that the inmates took with them inside the cabin, that it appears they left in a hurry and left those behind. and that is significant because, brooke the terrain out here is really rough, really rugged and harsh terrain. we're in franklin county and the sheriff told me if boots were left behind and these inmates -- or at least one of them is maybe barefoot they would not last long. there are sudden areas where there's swamps and then cliffs and really thick, heavy brush. now, i can tell you, even standing here all day, this is the road where they are bussing in the search crews and we've been seeing them bus them in literally bus loads. also literally trucking in al-terrain vehicles and other four-wheelers,

capture a fugitive david sweat naming names? and is he telling the truth? sara ganim is outside of the hospital where sweat is talking. tell me more about this dry run. what else is he saying? >> reporter: brooke well, authorities are looking into the possibility that guards on the honor block where these two men were housed that they may have been sleeping during their shift overnight giving these two men the opportunity to crawl into the walls, into the passages and practice. we know that the district attorney has said -- he said two weeks ago that they were looking into the possibility that they were inside the walls in the middle of the night, up to six weeks before the actual escape looking around to see where they could go how they could potentially get to the other side of the wall and out and so now authorities are looking into this possibility that guards were actually asleep during their shift during the night. brooke? >> guards would be sleeping. obviously it would be wise why they would do this at night. also now we have -- and i need to give our viewers a fair warning,

latest let's go to sara ganim in plattsburgh not far from the correctional facility there. sara tell us what is next for joyce mitchell especially as we now understand just how much she was involved in this. >> well what's next for her today is that she's going back to jail. she was not able to post that $110,000 cash bail as of now. her attorney says he's going to spend the day talking to her. he was just appointed today and the district attorney tells us that this case now moves -- he'll go to a grand jury to try to secure an indictment on it. he has six more days to do that before she could potentially be released if he does not get that indictment in that amount of time but her case moves on to county court. she moves out from this level and from there we'll await the indictment in hopefully more detail brianna. >> her husband, sara, worked at this prison as well in quite close proximity to her. have authorities learned anything from him? >> they did talk to him. i spoke to the district attorney over the weekend. we asked him about lyle mitchell, who is her husband, who also

not discount the fact that they could have had collaboration. >> sara ganim is joining us live from owl's head in upstate new york near where that cabin is located about 30 miles or so from the prison in dannemora. we heard the lead investigators in the search. what l.e.d. them that cabin where they found the dna? >> we know the lead, the tip that led them here came on saturday from someone who was checking on an unoccupied cabin and saw a man leaving, running into the woods through a back door. the cabin was burglarized, they called police police removed certain items from the cabin. our law enforcement sources telling us they were tested for dna and tested positive for those inmates which is a big break considering that on friday they had -- law enforcement said the trail had gone cold for these two. i want to give you an idea wolf of what this area is like. very rural, in the adirondacks, upstate new york lots of unoccupied cabin, lots of seasonal home lots of hiking trails biking trails. the kinds of things searchers have been looking through when these two inmates disappeared.
