mass debate and that's why i think paul ryan is good. pat: they have a flat tax and they're talking flat tax because politically that has enormous appeal to the republican base and the entire republican party. supply siders, and pop -- populists. get all those tax rates down. taxes. john: mike huckabee, he called these plans, the tax arrangements that were mentioned here and you've tried to discuss. these plans are "putting lipstick on a pig." and told cnbc he would promote replacing income tax and the end of the i.r.s. with a higher sales tax. what do you think of that? tom: honestly, i'm happy for huckabee because this is a guy -- i think he's someone with very little credibility. and i would prefer that we had a system where the tax code is massively simplified and more efficient. you can have lower rates and a bit for revenue. at the same time you cannot just have a sales tax. that would kill poor people in america. pat: you could put a 20% tariff on all imports, you get $600 billion and eliminate the corporate tax. why didn't somebody ask trump, you seem to be a protectionist.

controversial bakken pipeline project. kcci's ryan smith is live in boone for the all day public hearing. ryan: 280 people signing up to speak out on this topic today here inside the boone community building. earliest morning, there wasn't an empty seen the house. at the day -- as they progressed, the crowd has thinned out. they have extended the public comment portion until 5:15 tonight. >> the vast majority of iowans support this project. >> this pipeline is wrong for iowans. ryan: a testy back and forth hearing. 8 hours of passionate pleas from iowans, taking a stand for or against the bakken pipeline. the fate of the controversial project will be decided by the iowa utilities board. the pipeline would cut through 18 iowa counties, including boone and story. an estimated 500 people in attendance, putting this community building at capacity. speakers got 2 minutes to state their case. >> it will create an unprecendented abuse of land owner's rights. it will present a perpertual threat of catastrophic spills in iowa and it will contribute to >> the apprenticeship allowing our members no
