breaking into homes in nassau county. they say he struck at least 17 homes in port washington and thousands of dollars worth of jewelry designer purses and sunglasses all since november 2014. eyewitness news reporter mallory huff is in port washington with the lead story. >> reporter: joe, sandra, good evening. some of those cases took place in this neighborhood. investigators say what this man was looking for was of the high-end variety. the 31-year-old server at an upscale manhattan restaurant is charged with 17 counts of burglary. >> it's great to know he is caught. >> reporter: it includes jewelry, sunglasses, high-end bags, electronics and credit cards. together they are worth more than $300,000. >> we got a dog because we heard what's happening. my wife said let's get a dog. i said sure. >> reporter: the accused february 20 charged with three counts of burglary. after investigators obtained a search warrant for his brooklyn apartment, they found stolen items that connect him to 14 more cases. he was out on bail when he was taken back into police custody. today he was arraigned on the

person killed identified as a 38-year-old man three others injured at least one person transported to bellview hospital in serious condition. >> the person who was killed upon impact and the other people were all hit by falling debris. >> the pictures tell the story. look at this line of cars smashed with people temporarily first responders, windows blown out, debris scattered everywhere, the large cab on it's side in the street all of this as people rushed to work in locher manhattan. >> the construction workers were blocking off the area. the danger to people on the street was lessened and thank god we didn't have more injuries and didn't lose more people. >> i couldn't believe it. the other days i was just thinking i hope it doesn't fall and then it happened. >> it was in place for work at 60 hudson street. >> the work on going was to replace the generators and air conditioning equipment on the roof so we had full permits for the crane itself. wrong. it slowly started to sway picking up speed as it crashed down clipped a nearby building and caused gas leaks shutting down the area. >> it's a painful day. we have to make sure what happened doesn't happen again. the scene as several buildings evacuated. a massive piece of construction equipment owned by bay crane in long island city operated by galasso. the crane was inspected just yesterday by the department of buildings the mayor says. all tower and crawler cranes in new york city have been ordered secured. the pair of buildings on worth street are in danger of collapse. live in manhattan cbs 2 news. >> the deadly collapse rattling nerves of people who knew something like this could happen. meg baker live with more from residents. meg? >> chris and mary residents are being evacuated as we speak. now the possibility of a gas leak has everyone on high alert here and i spoke to residents who could see that crane from their bedroom windows. residents furious this morning >> my concern is that this was a disaster waiting to happen. we knew something was going to happen. we asked the operator, galasso rigging construction what are the odds of this crane collapsing and they said you have a better chance of winning the power ball lottery. >> residents at an apartment building were nervous from day one when the crane was erected. >> this crane has been here for a week. it was shut down two days ago because of high wind. >> they've been watching the building across the street. >> the crane is 300 feet high. it's lifting equipment the size of a medium sized truck. >> a worker in that building recounts the after math. bruce airman was home and felt the impact from a 6th floor apartment. >> it was the same feeling physically of shaking as 9/11 only far, far worse. going to collapse. >> brian o'rourke's wife is still inside. >> i live at 13 worth street our window faced directly out on the cab for this crane. >> so your wife is still inside. >> my wife is inside. i was uptown on a bus and she called me and said it fell. and i knew what she meant. she said it feels like 9/11. >> now con edison has been on the scene for several hours here and again residents were told if they were outside their apartments to go in grab a few belongings and get out on worth street between church street and hudson street where we are now. no timeline on when you can return. meg baker cbs 2 news. traveling canal street to the north, broadway to the east, taking to the south near chambers or hudson street to the west in and around this area intersections that are close so within this grid spontaneous detours throughout the day and weekend. traveling to the holland tunnel inbound traffic forced to exit northbound avoid traveling south of canal street currently closed around the accident scene. bus changes as well. expect detours on the m5, m20, 22, 27 and 28 bus lines for you. and chambers street in both directions. 2 and 3 bypassing as well. this list has been posted on our facebook pretty, post card view in the city but it's heavy wet snow so watch out. cloudy and 32 cold enough for line now. we are seeing the snow stop in manhattan and basically pushing through parts of brooklyn still snowing in queens wrapped up in the bronx and starting to see bluer skies north and west. heavy whiter bright bands indicating more snow. we are going to tack onto the six inch totals we've seen for parts of long island and the jersey shore but then we are going to see a nice little break and a comfortable weekend. we talk about storm totals and time out the exit of this storm in the accumulation here on me. it started around 4: 00 this morning and has not stopped since as you mentioned. there are about 12,000 long island customers without power at this hour just one of the ways people are having to deal with another snow day. >> i didn't think it was going to snow this much. it's crazy out. >> the snow came down for hours across long island this morning blanketing homes and streets making driving especially difficult and dangerous like here on old country road in corral place. nick of franklin square got behind the wheel to go to work. >> pretty bad. it's very slippery out. couldn't really stop that much. >> the roads are slushy. not a good day to be driving. >> the conditions caused many school districts to cancel classes. for adults who still had to travel this morning, many told us the train was the better option. the train ran fine but the roads were terrible. i had to get to the station but the roads were horrendous. >> the driving was pretty rough but the railroad seems to be fine. >> the long island railroad operated with scattered delays with the rush. most trains were on or close to schedule a relief for riders. >> it seems to be running good so that's good. >> and back out here live at this hour the long island railroad is operating with about 15 minute delays in both directions on the port jefferson hemstead oyster bay and news of that deadly train collapse in tribeca. the crane collapsed between west broadway and church and it was being secured when it collapsed due to wind. a 38-year-old man sitting in a parked car was killed. three others were injured by falling debris. >>> two city police officers recovering from bullet wounds after they was shot in the south bronx last night. more. >> of course we are learning this shooter has 15 prior arrests including robbery, weapons possession and drugs and that he has served jail time. investigators say he was the sole shooter in this case altercation that left those two nypd officers in the hospital. >> the quick exchange of gunfire. the officers were fired at close range by 23-year-old malic chavez of the bronx after he was confronted in the stair well of the melrose houses in the bronx. >> i just heard a few velated there right away. thursday night. the officers began routine development. the team asked the suspects for id and the shots went off. >> three officers were conducting a vertical patrol in a 6th floor stair well area when they encountered two individuals one of whom produced a firearm and shot at our officers. >> 29-year-old officer patrick 24 officer cruz shot in the stomach. the third officer fired back at chavez missing as he ran storming into an apartment saying i just shot a police lady. i ain't going back to jail. sources say chavez asked a woman inside the apartment to shoot him. when she refused he went to a back room and fired once killing himself. mayor de blasio last night where doctors performed on both officers who are expected to recover. >> it's another example of what our officers confront every single day keeping us safe not only in the streets of new york city but in the stair wells and hallways of public housing developments. >> police recovered an automatic hand gun and shotgun near chavez's body. the gun is from tennessee. people who were in the apartment were questioned and released the man who was with him in the stair well he not appear he'll be charged. police say officer who was shot in the cheek is expected to be released later today. reporting live from the news couple of hours. how much longer john? >> a couple of hours for long island and that's going to add to these big totals we are already seeing. weather watchers a lot of reports from long island focusing on the pictures. i really want to share this comment from joann in east rutherford. it is beautiful but we hope it melts soon. then the concern is at 32 degrees very treacherous driving and john reporting that there is ice at the base. pictures. matt is saying long island the bulls eye and the concern here lauri makes a great point. look at that snow there's just enough of it so it's weighing down some of these power lines and trees. beautiful views around the area. even dana in jersey got a coating to four inches on average the weather watchers there. so let's take a look what's going on in the city. snow has stopped. it is it pretty but it's still a bit of a challenge. 32 winds screaming out of the north 32 now these numbers across the board colder than we were yesterday from almost 10 to over 20 degrees and the winds still gusting anywhere from 15 to 30 miles per hour. wind will help to dry surfaces but the cold air will refreeze overnight and your comfort wind chills this afternoon 20 to 35. it's going to be cold. there's the snow line right now pushing through brooklyn into queens. staying though we are still going to add to these totals we see more of a break. also concerned about just the jersey shore ocean could see more of that snow. between now and 3: 30 almost clearing the area. still the twin forks dealing with a little bit more and by 5:30 clear and cold overnight. 2 to 4 we have reports of five to seven on the ground. of course we'll have a full wrap up of the totals which he'll be able to tally by the time we get around to the 5:00 laguardia, i don't think so. the record 1. i'm forecasting three. central park 2 degrees. bridgeport crushes the record right now 3 degrees i'm forecasting 4 below zero. jfk 4, break it with 2. islip the record 7 and you crush it with 2 degrees below zero. wind chills will be the issue this weekend. because again the temperatures will be cold. the winds are strong. we have wind chill warnings and advisories for the entire area. take a look at what the temperatures will feel like late saturday into sunday around the city points south even east. 15 below to 25 below zero north of the city 20 below zero to 30 below zero. there's a warmup out there. it's not far off into the distance so sit tight. we'll talk about that coming up. >> ably the weather is colds the most important thing is staying warm. >> vanessa murdoch doing just that with the mobile weather lab in columbus circle right now. >> reporter: staying warm will be a challenge as weigh move forward. we are with the mobile weather lab here. take a look at the current conditions. winds are on the calm side so we are measuring a wind chill of about 2 degrees. as we look across the region though you will see those wind chills drop on off. temperatures across the region right now in the teens and 20s. but the wind chills are in the singling digits and teens and we know the temperature is only going to go down from here. those wind chills will feel like 20 below zero. by tomorrow night in some could feel as cold as 50 below zero. prepare for it. as a result of the incredibly cold temperatures, the city has issued a code blue. the mayor is asking for new yorkers to take this weather very seriously. the fdny will check the hydrants at department of sanitation has salt trucks ready to go in case icing is a problem. we have been talking to new individual we spoke to is looking forward to the upcoming bitter blast. >> my friends in town so we are trying to make the best of it. >> it's going to be 40 degrees colder tomorrow at this time. >> i don't want to hear that. i think we are going to try to walk around tomorrow, too. so it sounds horrible. >> it's going to be in the single digits. that's going to be freezing. [ laughter ] >> i'm not looking forward to that at all. >> reporter: what will you do? >> bundle up, go exploring, grit our teeth. >> reporter: all right. so as people are walking by they are saying it's freezing! but it only feels like oh, 15.5 degrees right now. it will feel 35 degrees colder tomorrow night. and we are talking the possibility of record setting cold through the weekend. live in inside penn people. >> reporter: a rough evening commute home for people here at penn station. take a look. this is the new jersey transit area. delays of up to 60 minutes because of some emergency tunnel. repairs will run through the evening rush hour. tickets will be cross-honored. lirr customers are having some delays as well and cancellations during this rush hour due to reduced capacity in the east river tunnel. so if you are traveling here out of penn station, plan some extra time. tracee carrasco, cbs 2 news. >>> meantime tonight there's been another slashing in the city. robbing and attacking a woman in the van ness section of the bronx. paula santos was slashed at morris park and holland avenues around midnight. she post the photos of the injury on facebook and said she was pushed, kicked and robbed. she said: >>> tonight, a grieving family wants to know how and why a brooklyn woman died at a coney island hospital. her husband blames hospital staffers claiming that they mocked his wife and then ignored her as she lay dying in the emergency room last month. cbs 2's steve langford reports on this alleged wrongful death. >> she is not hooked up to anything. she hasn't seen no doctor. >> reporter: jorge matos struggling to describe his wife's last hours at the emergency room of coney island hospital a nightmare he says the moment they were rushed here by ambulance. her head and the other four emts are tiger had up like a dog. >> reporter: matos along sides an attorney charging malpractice an wrongful death that began they say when staff at the emergency room that the woman was suffering a psychotic reaction to the drug k2 an alleged misdiagnosis accompanying by laughing and giggling on the part of emergency room staffers the husband says. >> the nurse says she look like she has been smoking synthetic weed. >> reporter: it was a possible case of meningitis that went untreated as her condition detieriors rated. a doctor not seeing his wife he charges until after she had her first heart attack in the emergency room. >> from 2 a.m. to 8 a.m., there were five cardiac arrests. >> reporter: the medical examiner's office says the death of the woman is still under investigation. and no conclusions have been made about the cause or manner of her death. complaints with the state health department. they left her there to die. >> reporter: coney island hospital not returning our calls for comments. steve langford, cbs 2 news. >> family lawyers say they have not yet filed suit against the hospital for what happened there on february 1. the new york state department of health also has not yet responded to our calls for comment. >>> a woman was mugged at gunpoint outside a green acres mall in valley stream long island. police say the 60-year-old woman was in the macy's parking lot yesterday afternoon when a man armed with a handgun approached her. he demanded her rings that and she gave them up. he ran from the scene. the woman was not hurt. >>> claims of sexual abuse during class at a nassau county school. two females students say their substitute teacher touched them inappropriately. cbs 2's magdalena doris is in port washington with the story. >> he should not be near children. that's really what it is. he should not be near children. >> reporter: court documents say james ervin told victims happened. the alleged abuse taking place inside of a classroom during class at a middle school. victims told police that the teacher touched their thigh, pelvis and buttocks and after asking him to stop, investigators say that's when the threats came. after posting bail set at $5,000, he made a quick exit from the nassau county district court house. he has been charged with two counts of sexual abuse, forcible touching and endangering the welfare of a child. his lawyer says the victims aren't being truthful. >> this is a fabrication. it's a complete and total fabrication. it's a bizarre set of circumstances to say the least. >> reporter: parents say it's a reminder to talk to your kids. >> we talked about the fact that there are these people out there and you have to be smart and be aware. >> reporter: the defendant has two orders of protection against him now. the school district says he is no longer working for them. island, madalena doris, cbs 2 news. >> he is due back in court march 3. >>> new traffic pattern on the upper west side has drivers upset. it part of the mayor's vision zero plan to make the streets safer for pedestrians. whose bright was this? sonia rincon reports. >> reporter: it's the latest change making it harder for cars to get around manhattan at the intersection known as the lincoln square bowtie. you used to be able to make a left on broadway going down columbus avenue. but now unless you're driving an mta bus you have to keep going south on columbus. we are continuing south on columbus avenue we run into this. construction that's taking up two how late of four lanes and we get stuck in the boat neck. >> it's brutal. i don't know what the mayor is thinking. >> we're balancing greenness and say. there are a lot of different issues. i don't think it's fatality. so clearly, there was a need to do something. >> reporter: she says the department of transportation brought in street engineers who came up with the redesign but she heard from the drivers who don't like it. >> in fact, i asked the department of transportation to come back and look at that inconvenience and, um, explore ways to fix it. >> reporter: the department of trappings will keep objection and killing with a 13-yearld girl. david eisenhauer natalie keepers are charged in the death of nicole lovell. her body was found in north carolina. they say that level exchange the text bill cosby appeared in a pennsylvania courtroom today. attorneys for the comedian asked the judge to throw out the only charges against him for sexually assaulting woman despite dozens of accusations over decades. >> reporter: bill cosby led into the montgomery county courthouse for a hearing on the sexual assault case against him attorneys for the 78-year-old comedian asked the judge to throw out a charge of aggravated indecent assault. in the criminal complaint osby is accused of drugging and sexually assaulting former temple university employee andrea constand in his home in 2004. his attorneys say she was a willing participant. she settled a civil case against him in 2006 for an undisclosed sum. his attorneys say his deposition in that case was made after an agreement with the district attorney bruce castor that the former tv star not be prosecuted. in recent months more than 50 women make similar claims against cosby some dating back decades but this is the first time he has been charged. his attorney called the case political payback from the new district attorney who reopened the case last year. >> a former district attorney said there wasn't enough there and it was (elephant noise) (donkey noise) hey candidates, answer the call already. >> i think the important thing about this study is that highlights that we've made significant progress in the past decade. there's been a significant decline from mortality from cardiovascular disease and heart disease in women and that's in large part due to awareness campaigns and education of women for greater focus on risk factors and greater use of effective treatments and women. we still see that women die more than men from heart disease and it is still the leading cause of death. we're trying to bring awareness to this. >> we talk about undertreatment. does that mean women aren't getting access to the same drugs or being put in clinical trials the same as men are? >> that's correct. we know there are certain therapies such as cholesterol- lowering therapies that women are less likely to receive than men. women represent 20% to 30% of patients enrolled in clinical trials so the treatment we are studying, we don't know if they are as effective in women as men. >> we call heart disease in women the silent killer. the symptoms are not the same for women. what should women know about their symptoms? >> reporter: residents say this explosion shook their homes. amazingly, the two victims of the blast were conscious and alert despite suffering gruesome injuries. this happened around 9:30 this morning at the fire and safety equipment in the town of wallkill. this company manufactures fire extinguishers. it is believed they were filling a tank in what's called for reasons that are still not known, the tank exploded. the victims are 23 and 35 years old and suffered instant amputations. one man lost both legs, another lost one. as it happens, the fire department is right around the corner and applied turn any tourniquets to stop the bleeding. >> we stopped the bleeding and we transported. >> reporter: they were taken to west chester medical center by helicopter. their conditions unknown. again, they were conscious and alert. here at the scene, state police remain here. they are investigating. osha is on its way as well as they try and determine the cause of this morning's explosion. >>> a warehouse fire in central new jersey is still burning at this hour. as we take a look, a live look at the scene in hillsboro, the flame broke out yesterday afternoon in anastral area off of -- an industrial area off of route 6. at one point, the fire reached 7 alarms and hundreds of firefighters were on the scene to help. schools in hillsborough are closed because of air quality. there has been only one minor injury so far. the smoke from the fire can be seen for miles. this is what it looks like from news copter 7. route 206 is open now. coming up at 12:30, we'll have more on the difficulty fighting the fire in this cold. >> a pro seat plane crashed at the plane took off from mcarthur airport. the faa and ntsb are investigating. >>> the new york city medical examiner has confirmed remains found in a park in hollis queens are human. a parks department employee found bones and a skull inside of a garbage bag yesterday afternoon next to a tree. neighbors heard park workers screaming after they made the discovery. the medical examiner's office says forensic anthropologists are in the early stages of the analysis. >>> we're following breaking news out of arizona where police are responding to a double shooting inside of a high school at independence high school in glendale this morning. two teenagers shot. the condition of the victims are still not known. school officials say, however there is no active shooter, and no one is in danger at this time. nevertheless, the school remains on lockdown as we learn any now information, and we'll >>> new details on the royal caribbean ship that was battered and damaged. the coast guard inspecting the anthem of the seas and paying special attention to the new propeller. the ship's left propeller stopped working and needed to be replaced. if it passes inspection, the ship will leave bayonne on a seven-day cruise tomorrow. >>> mayor de blasio says he hopes the conviction of former nypd officer peter liang provides a family of akai gurley with some comfort. he was found guilty of manslaughter after little more than two days of deliberations. liang says he accidentally fired the shot at a high-crime housing project in east new york. the bullet ricocheted off the wall and killed gurley last year. liang faces up to 15 years in prison. liang's attorney is vowing to appeal. accused of sexually abusing two school. the 51-year-old assaulted two students in port washington last month. he will be arraigned today in hampstead on forcible touching and sexual abuse charges. >>> turning to vote 2016 and the sparks were flying during last night's democratic debate. bernie sanders, hillary clinton squaring off for the sixth time. bazi kanani is live in washington with all of the highlights. bazi? everywhere across the area. that may knock power out. if it knocks down tree limbs and power lines, you can see our little corner of the world. bundle up with the coats, the scarves and gloves. you will need that right through the afternoon and into the evening. as we go into the evening and into the afternoon hours, we're looking at these temperatures that will continue and just be quite warm. we'll be quite cold, rather, i should say. as we are looking at 33% as far as the humidity goes with temperatures running 25. today will feel warm is my point. yesterday's high is 31, which felt nice. now we'll be looking at temperatures way below normal this time of year. 24 degrees massa peek with a all the way up to the river valley. it is about 23 degrees. winds are 5, 7, 8 miles per hour. we'll continue to see what's going to be a wind that builds into tomorrow afternoon. it will be rather gusty and heavy. teens, and they will be in the single digits overnight and way below zero tomorrow. the wind thrill chills are 17 to 21 degrees. we're looking at temperatures to start plummeting tonight. we've got clear skies and all the way back to the great lakes. we've got a front that is right there across the lakes. that is a polar front that is diving down that will give us the cold air that comes in tonight. you'll see with our futurecast, here comes the cold air that comes right into the area. the cold air will be pouring in here. tonight and tomorrow morning with that, too. so the roadways tonight could be a little treacherous and dangerous. you'll want to make sure that you travel safely and maybe you limit your travel tonight and tomorrow morning. we get the blasts of snow that are going to be coming in. we will see a temperature that drops tonight down into the teens, and we'll just continue to see these temperatures falling through the afternoon into the evening hours, into the nighttime. we'll see you are into the teens tomorrow morning and into then below zero north and west tomorrow through the afternoon. so they are the windchills, too, we've been talking about. 15, 18, looking at 15 to 20 degrees below zero as we head into tomorrow afternoon, tomorrow night, and sunday morning. that's just going to be brutally cold with 10 to 20 degrees below temperatures. we're looking at this cold with temperatures 20 to 30 degrees colder than normal. we're 28 for the afternoon. tonight we'll be down to 15. tomorrow is just blasts of snow in the morning. the temperature will be falling. 18 we hit in the morning. then we'll see the temperature falling all day. we'll have sunshine and 19 on sunday. snow comes in monday night, changing over to a mix of rain, ice, and snow. on tuesday, we're back in the 40s. be careful this weekend, you guys. one good thing about this fire is that it is not spreading. not even to two other buildings that are on that site. the fire, the cold, the wind, conditions for firefighters. it's just that massive of a fire, two old buildings more than 240,000 square feet. every bit of them in flames. >> we're looking at probably three to five days minimum of putting water on this until's out-out. >> reporter: mutual aid has made it possible to have firefighters on site around the clock since the fire began at the old military depot that's been used as storage facilities. it's not just the fire, the weather is brutal. >> the sprinkler systems are old and not fit for what's in the buildings now. >> reporter: traffic has been horrific to p. with cars trying to get a closer look. it's the last thing local leaders want or need right now. >> we ask that you keep yourselves sheltered inside. there is still smoke out there. >> reporter: here they come. they are monitoring air quality. so far, no serious a woman was pronounced dead at the scene at 11th avenue and west 37th street. they say the investigation is ongoing. no other details were released. >>> new at noon, another person is recovering following a disturbing slashing incident. this one was in the bronx. police say the 20-year-old woman was walking at 12:15 this morning when a man grabbed her. the suspect tried to take the victim's cell phone. when he didn't get it, the suspect slashed the woman across her face. the victim says she fell to the ground and was kicked. the suspect run away with the victim's purse. the shooting death of a teenage boy around 10:00 last night inside of a home in east new york. authorities are speaking with two other teens who were there when the 16-year-old was shot. police are also interviewing a shooting. -- witnessed the shooting. >>> issuing a warning about influenza, declaring it prevalent in the state. flu cases have been reported in 44 new york counties, including all five new york city boroughs. the flu season has seen more than 800 hospitalizations but no deaths at this time. with the declaration, any health care professionals must wear masks. >>> ex-olympian and downhill skier picabo street is claiming self-defense after she pushed her father down a staircase and abc's clayton sandel has the latest. >> reporter: she's preparing now for a fight in court charged with assault and domestic violence, accused of throwing her 76-year-old father down the stairs of her utah home and locking him in the basement. >> my father just tried to attack me in my own house in front of my children. >> reporter: the former olympian claiming self-defense. overnight, her lawyer telling abc news she takes care of both of her elderly parents and that times. he had his noon, barry manilow's tour is on hold after the singer had complications from dental surgery. a post on manilow's facebook page said the cop indications developed following emergency oral surgery on monday. it says after a concert in memphis, the 72-year-old rushed back to los angeles. math lope's publicist -- manilow's publicist says he's not hospitalized and is otherwise perfectly healthy. ohio with a machete. authorities say he randomly attacked two people sitting on the front. when officers found him, he was holding a machete and knife. police shot him when they say he lunged at them. one
