not hundreds of heavily armed north carolina state troopers that they have brought in not only in riot gear but also with long rifles as well. i'll give you a sense of the battle lines here. this is actually the base called the epicenter. it's where all the stadiums are, where all the restaurants and hotels are. there were street battles going on just outside of the ritz-carlton. a number of cars smashed. there were two stories. first was the protest that started around 6:00 or 7:00 tonight. mostly peaceful. then by 8:30 there was a shooting with one person critically wounded now on life support. and then it really began to sort of fly with rockets, tear gas, bottles, fireworks. everything going back and forth between these police and what had really become rioters. there were a number of arrests about 12:30 is when the police decided to finally go hands on, if you will, and stop the looting that had been occurring all over this city. the one thing the protesters say is, they're justified. >> whether i'm here, i'm in school, i'm in my car, you said okay a man got shot over here, r

in north carolina of all places. a state that often set the standard for moving everybody into the future. and i admired that so much. emphasis on education from literally preschool through college. emphasis on research. emphasis on job creation and innovation. and now north carolina, under the current governor and legislature, has been trying to restrict people's right to vote. well, you know it. north carolina voters, though, won an important victory when a federal court struck down this state's voter i.d. law. and the federal court brought back more days of what's called one stop early voting. and here's what the court said, this is not me talking, this is what the federal court said. the court said the north carolina law was designed to target african-americans with almost surgical precision. now, that's just happening in north carolina, unfortunately. it's happening across america. and courts have been overturning restrictions that make it harder, not just for african-americans, but low income people. latinos, young people. one of the provisions in the north carolina law was t

. we're focusing on the scene in north carolina's largest city. the mayor ordered a curfew at midnight and we're waiting to see when protestors will obey it. demonstrators have taken to the streets after a black police officer shot and killed a black man named keith scott. some of the violence, some of the protests turned violent but so far tonight, things have been more peaceful. reporters on the scene have described the energy as different this evening. with ht less anger as been described to us. north carolina state senator tweeted it some have been offering bottles of water to police with a lot of handshakes. however, in the last 15 minutes, we've seen riot police face off with protestors on interstate 277 there and reporters say the officers started to use tear gas in an attempt to clear the road. these are live pictures of the scene. the national guard and north carolina state troopers are on hand to help out the police. the cops have not yet released video that show the killing which could help clear up what happened. cops have said keith scott had a gun, and refused to drop it.
