i know hamburg well. what german police are saying on their official twitter feed is that the protest spread to st. pauly's. the german police are claiming the protest has been cancelled. the demonstrators that applied and had their permit pulled that permit and that the demonstration is cancelled. at the same time one of the main organizers of the protest, is in hamburg, she is claiming the police started the violence. they initiated it. they started these attacks. very difficult to report this from afar. least on social media what we are hearing from the german police as well as organizer is that the protests have indeed spread. hamburg is a very wealthy, perhaps the wealthiest city in germany but also has a strong tradition of the left. you look at government in power there. 45% are the social democratic party. left got about 12% in last elections. greens around 13. this is left of center city that is also very commercially prosperous. i should also note that hamburg was upset about brexit. like a lot

this is in hamburg, germany just before 8:00. for the last hour or so, we saw a standoff between police there and germany and protestors. thousands of them gathering ahead of the g 20. and it had been four our five minutes ago it was largely peaceful and then something changed. do we know what changed? was there some sort of an event? what happened? the police have pushed down the street confronting protestors and firing smoke bombs and bringing in a water cannon to disburse the protestors. there are battles between demonstrators and riot police moving again in this direction to stop the protestors from even staying in this area. here come the water cannons again. again, kier simmons on the ground there, we should note at one time the journalists were between the protestors and the police. the police who had been wearing riot gear all day there in germany, they were fully anticipating this, and as you see the water cannons that kier was talking about just now being fired. we also saw a number of smoke bombs as well. we were told

h hamburg is also a major trading city. it would have looked like a great place to hold the summit because it sends some messages, for example that the german chancellor would have wanted to send, like the importance of global trade in contrast to the messages we have heard from president trump. so she would have wanted to hold the summit in a major german city. and the protestors suggested there might be 10,000 demonstrators here. we don't know how many, but these are, i would say, a few thousands hard core comm demonstrators, not the majority of the view in germany or this city itself. just how much more of this will this be? >> i want to go to kelly o'donnell who is there covering the g 20 suspect as well. how much of the clashes are reaching your side? is it just the noise and is there any reaction from the white house about trump making his way there in the middle of the demonstration sngs. >> no reaction from the white house yet, but it was expected that there would be protests as we discussed. the g 20 always attract

she selected hamburg. and she, in many people's eyes, is one of the most forceful leaders on the world stage right now. and she is still in a new relationship with president trump. this will be their third time coming together. they've spoken by phone a number of times in addition to that. they have areas of great common interests but also some real disagreements in how they view the world. earlier, speaking before her parliament, she told the world, without naming donald trump, that isolationism, protectionism are causes of concern. she is not going to have an easy meeting, she suggested. the conversations here in hamburg, she expects, will be hard. that implied her relationship with donald trump and the president who will be joined by the first lady, melania trump. we expect a very friendly welcome as part of the host nation receiving the president of the united states. but when it comes to some of the actual meetings and conversations, there is also expected to be some tension. so, time with angela merk

he then heads over the g-20, as you know, in hamburg. there, it is going to be much more tense, much more difficult territory, given the meeting with president xi. that's taken on new urgency here. one administration official telling me yeah, they expect that to be a little bit rougher than the first mar-a-lago meeting back in april between the two. he's got that all-important meeting with president putin a let's not forget, he's still meeting with peopl like chancellor angela merkel, other european leaders who don't see eye-to-eye with him when it comes to trade, for example. something the president is already tweeting about this morning. i do want to note one other thing on the plane ride over here, on air force one just a couple minutes ago we got word from the white house that the president called al sisi, talked with him about the threat from north korea, working to build this international coalition against north korea even as china, the chinese leader, met with putin and other russian leaders as well. a lot of diplomacy happening

nbc's keir simmons is live in hamburg, germany, ahead of the g20. i know you've been talking to folks at the kremlin. what are you learning about this upcoming meeting between trump and putin? >> reporter: well, not very much honestly. kremlin official echoing the white house saying not much has been decided yet. we don't know. we know it will be on friday. we don't know when on friday, how it will take place, how formal it will be, how long it will be. that kremlin official telling me the two presidents will talk for as long as they need to. now, when you think about that statement, it is pitch perfect in terms of what the russians would like this meeting to be about because one of their key objectives is quite simply to have their president be seen on an equal footing to the american president. president putin will have met with president xi of china before they come here, so just, for example, if you take the north korean situation that you have been talking about, president putin will go in, if that is an item for discussion when the two preside

right now as we speak it's after 3:00 in the morning in hamburg. things are died down after the big and violent confrontations today there were peaceful protesters that stuck around. as we're told right now, heading into tomorrow, things are still on schedule for the official summit which starts tomorrow. and in terms of american politics, that means everybody is bracing for the first official meeting between president trump and the russian president vladimir putin. tomorrow is trump's first meeting as president with putin. but it is not his first meeting as president with a russian official. i think part of what's giving so many americans so much focus about this meeting tomorrow is what happened the last time trump had a meeting with russians since he's been president. you'll remember that was the one inside the oval office where trump inexplicably disclosed to the russians code secret top secret intelligence that should have never been shared with any other country, especially the russians. and he told them yes, he had fired the fbi director bec

let's go to nbc hallie jackson who is in hamburg for us tonight. one big question was answered the trump did speak to putin about election hacking. they brought it up first. both sides agree to that. the rest of it, the conflicting stories, what can you add? >> reporter: both sides acknowledge this issue came up. the idea that russia interfered in the election. that's one of the the, if not the trillion dollar question. will the president bring it up despite a day ago refusing to say whether moscow did meddle with the 2016 election. now we know the president brought it up. both sides are saying it happened in different ways. you have heard the russian minister say that president trump accepted vladmir putin's denial that russia was behind that. one said that is not accurate. there was no acceptance of the denial. i think this goes to the kind of diplomatic dance that you're seeing. with so few people in the room, the potential for leaks is pretty low given it was both presidents, their top diplomats and two translaters. each side is delivering the

hallie jackson is at the g20 summit in hamburg for us this morning. hallie, good morning. a busy morning for the president. what are the takeaways from the day so far? >> reporter: we're already halfway through our day here, dara. we're at the site of where some of these g20 meetings are happening. we have moved from our previous location. the president has had a pretty packed day. let me hit you with the recent highlights. we know that he held an impromptu side bar with other world leaders. he just emerged from a room in which he was seen with prime minister turnbull of australia. he's the prime minister who openly mocked president trump earlier this year. he was seen with theresa may, emmanuel macron of france and some of his key cabinet members like secretary mnuchin, secretary ross, his top economic advisor, gary cohn as well, presumably they were hammering out perhaps some of the details of the communique that will come out at the end of the g20 that all of the nations sign onto. that's just our best guess. he also held a meeting with the leader of singapore. the one

this a part of hamburg that's known for its left wing ideas. it's kind of an area where people group together and as you can see there are still people on the streets, still some shouting. we saw clashes with police and protesters. many of them covering their faces. we saw tear gas fired. these water cannons used in anger again and again as the german police moved on a group of protesters. they said around 12,000 were there and suggested the reason why they moved on one particular hard core group is because they were covering their faces and that was illegal. what we saw was that although the protersters lined up in a military fashion, it was the police that moved first firing the smoke bombs and tear gas into the crowd. there was panic as many tried to climb out of the street. climb away, get away and then there were those clashes over sustained periods. relatively quiet now here in hamburg aside from the kind of scene that you're seeing here. >> have you gotten any sense of how many arrests were made? how many people might have been injured?

in all, more than 20,000 police officers are on duty in hamburg. back to "hardball." >>> in the grand skecheme of things, we don't care who is the head of the united states. we know what will happen. in this regard, even if we wanted to, it wouldn't make sense for to us interfere. >> that was of course russian president vladimir putin denying his country's interference in the 2016 election during last month's megyn kelly. well, putin made a similar denial to president trump. he has repeatedly denied it calling it hysteria. >> translator: for me, this is just amazing. you've created a sensation out of nothing. and out of the sensation, you turn it into a weapon of war against the current president. this is, just, you people are so creative over there. good job. your lives must be boring. >> well, putin may think america's concerns are overreaction but he has his own interests in mind. among they will, getting rid of u.s. sanctions imposed. the first came over crimea in 2014 and more sanctions following meddle into our 2016 election. in not a article

the leaders of the g-20 came to the president, that he was a star in hamburg. no one can take that away. >> ben judah is the author of "fragile empire: how russia fell in and out of love with vladimir putin." mike lupica, shelby holliday, nick kristof. judging by what you know what happened at the summit, many have said trump was sort of a man standing alone. would you say it was a win for him? >> you have to remember that vladimir putin doesn't think in terps of quick media wins and how it went down on twitter and how it was going down on the networks. he's thinking completely different. vladimir putin claims not to use the internet, claims to only ready jested analyses, printed out from his staff. vladimir putin of course doesn't have to worry about cable news networks because they're all controlled in russia and under his sort of propaganda grip. so putin will be looking at this meeting and the process going forward thinking what did trump actually deliver for me? what have i got out of this in concrete terms on the ground in syria or in europe or elsewhere?

what's your thought as you watch this scene unfolding on the streets of hamburg? >> i agree with you. i mean, donald trump and vladimir putin are probably thrilled that there's a huge protest that has nothing to do with them. these are anti-globalization protesters. and they're perfectly, like, they're the proof of western freedoms. that they get to behave this badly while world leaders are meeting. the one thing i would say, though, is that really repressive governments like vladimir putin's or president erdogen in turkey use film footage like this to argue that they can't have press freedom and freedom of assembly in their own country. >> i want to go to peter alexander who has just become available to us. he has been traveling with the president, as well as part of our nbc, msnbc team. peter, what are the expectations on the ground? any kind of color you can give us as these two men went into these highly watched meetings to say the least? >> yeah, no, this has been anticipated for more than months. certainly since the beginning of the campaign where president

needing reinforcements into this area, which is the portieria here in hamburg. further back we can see water -- miguel, can we move down a little bit and we can show them this shot. in that direction there is water canon firing at protesters right now trying to get control of these crowds that have just broken away suddenly. that's what is making it so difficult for the german police is that there doesn't seem to be any clear method to the way these protesters are working, stephanie. we talked about the fact that these are desperate groups, not necessarily working together. some anti-capitalists. if we point that way, you can see a group of riot police heading up this street, along this street towards another group of protesters. but all the time what i'm seeing is kind of bands of demonstrators moving independently. and what we think they are doing are trying to get to the area where the summit is being held. they would very much like to break through to that area. that would be their goal. right now the german police, despite what you're seeing, are insisting
