the country. republican senator dean heller fighting for his job. now, he declined to join us here in reno today. but you know who we are talking to, two of his election challengers. about a race that could redefine the senate. we have our team ready to go. garrett haake is joining me on set and also with us is a familiar face and a friend of this show, john rosten. editor of the "nevada independent." talk about the president and talk about everything that happened over the past couple days. garrett, i want to start with you. here is how people should not be describing what happened. not surprising and not unexpected and not as bad for him as the conventional wisdom seems to suggest. now he wants to have a discussion later today in reno where he talks about unity. can he hit those notes? >> last night was 2015/2016 donald trump living with us in 2017. not surprising. can he hit the notes of unity? absolutely. his team is capable of writing it. the situation that we're in right now is will people watching at home credibly believe the president who has been in this habit of essentially

heller and jeff flake as the more vulnerable incumbents. they are not very pro-trump. they voted with the agenda, but they are not necessary the rhetoric. is that sustainable going after candidates that aren't pro-trump enough, but also trying to protect members that are not? steven: obviously every state is different. but we are learning a lot from our engagement in alabama which will be helpful to us as we head into the 2018 cycle. what we are certainly learning in states in alabama where donald trump trump's approval rating is up above 85% for republicans, if you not bracing the president or his agenda, that can be a challenge you have to overcome. it will be a different situation in a place like nevada, where president trump narrowly lost and even in places like arizona where he only won by 3.5 percentage points. they calculus will be different in each case. trump is a factor to be reckoned with in all of the states where we have competitive races, including where we have republicans needing to defend. al: what happens if kelly ward or dave tarkanian wins in arizona or nevada, wou

. the senate seat. currently held by dean heller. very vulnerable. he just got himself a republican primary opponent today. listen to what his new opponent said when he announced. >> i'm very excited to announce i'm going to run for the united states senate here in nevada against dean heller. we're never going to make america great again unless we have senators in office that fully support president trump and his america first agenda. dean heller wasn't just one of the first never trumpers in nevada. he was one of the most influential and actually helped hillary clinton win the state of nevada. >> so this comes from the other side. republicans who go up against the president, and challenge him. you know, get a challenge from the right. now, danny tarkanian is a son of the legendary basketball coach and run many, many times unsuccessfully. so he's kind of a known quantity, probably good for dean heller. >> absolutely. we did see donald trump personalize this with dean heller at the debate. ribbed him, you better do the right thing because your voters are watching. again, the problem
