to some rain and some sierra snow just in time for christmas. it doesn't look like a big significant storm system, but it will bring in some additional rainfall because it's been such a dry month we need it. our temperatures highs in the mid to upper 50s, inland areas more of the same and cold mornings. vianey has been tracking the sig alerts and huge backups on the roads. >> we are still seeing that backup but it is also following a deadly crash which is a sad with a i to start our morning. this is a live look using our sky ranger overhead. you can see how heavy the delays are. again, they are diverting traffic off on 66th avenue along southbound 880. this is in oakland right near the coliseum. investigators are on the scene. so is kris sanchez our reporter. chp right now is estimating that they are expected to remain closed at least that hard  closure in place at least through 7:00 a.m., but with that heavy backup and all of those delays you can definitely expect to keep that traffic in place even after they open all the lanes. so for now i would say take the surface streets. i d

. >> none of that going on around here. it's been sunny. even in the sierra, it's been really quiet. the next several days, nothing changing here. we are going to see more dry weather. taking a live look outside in san francisco, it's 47 degrees as you get ready to head out. if you are going back to work today, check out that seven day forecast, it's at the bottom of the screen, starting in the south bay with dry weather over the next several days. looking at the current temperature now, we are at 44 degrees in san jose and 38 degrees in livermore. 41 degrees in oakland and 47 now in san francisco. now, look at these freezing temperatures we have in santa rosa and fairfield. we also have fog. so, unfortunately, there may be icy roads out there, freezing fog is an issue as visibility is reduced to a quarter mile. we have this on shore flow returning to the bay area. it is helping to bring back in more moisture. we will see all this clearing out today and sunshine, reaching up to 64 degrees in east san jose. downtown san jose, 63 degrees and the east bay reaching the mid-60s there. 61

second ago for christmas day. here it is. that's snow in the sierra, that's a kind of weaker cold front that we've been monitors, but it's very week. this frontal system if i speed this up ahead, on sunday december 24th, it does inch closer to the bay area, but only for the far north bay, so it's not going to be widespread, not going to be a soggy christmas, but the north bay may wake up -- the sierra snow is looking pretty good. if you're going to lake a tahoe today or tomorrow, it's going to be your best bet, because come tomorrow we'll be dealing with some slick roads. if i fast forward this through monday, it just completely moves out, clears out completely on actual christmas day. we're talking about the rain chances late christmas each into really early christmas morning. and a high pressure system bringing that dryness back. upper 50s, we've got the chance of showers far off to the north and christmas eve into early christmas morning, we're going to keep that into place. tomorrow 57 degrees, it might be more cloudy tomorrow, but we are expecting to be dry for the majority of the

christmas and there will be a chance of some rain and a white christmas for the sierra. we will have mid 50s through the rest of the forecast and san francisco, cold works and very nice weekend ahead, though. upper 50s for the inland areas, 58 degrees on saturday. vianey is tracking the slow down, you may need to get out the door a little early, right? >>> definitely. especially if you are going to be heading towards the east bay, out of the east bay or the palo alto area. a wide look right now, you can see for the most part we're doing pretty good in terms of any slowing. chp, though, has been busy this morning following a deadly crash, unfortunately somebody did dozen their life involving a fedex big rig and one other vehicle along southbound 880 at 66 avenue right near the coliseum. now, a hard closure is expected to remain in place at least through 7:00 a.m. according to the chp. they are starting to divert the traffic off of 66 avenue. again, if this is your early morning commute you may want to hop off of southbound 880 before fruitvale and take the surface streets. >> there is another

update on the sierra snow pack. now, we are looking at some of those snow levels only at about 24% of normal for the northern sierra and then around lake tahoe it's about 33% of normal. the statewide average is only 28% of where we should be. so big deal, especially as we are going into what's supposed to be our wettest months of the year. and then as we look at the bay area and what's coming down the pike as we end out the year and move into the new year, finally a significant chance of rain and there will be some snow in the sierra as well, but that does not come until next wednesday. so we will still have some dry weather over the next several days. new year's day looks good, more clouds moving in, san francisco reaching into the upper 50s. we will be ringing in the new year with temperatures in the mid 40s there and inland areas down into the lower 40s in some spots. more clouds and, look at that, finally some showers. i will be tracking all of that for you. mike is still saying there is some light traffic right now. >> light traffic now and likely through the end of the year, the

going to the sierra this weekend, but then look at these high temperatures, it's going to reach into the upper 50s tomorrow and some lower 50s for the rest of the weekend. shouldn't have any problems getting there because we haven't had any snow recently, but that's part of the problem, too. i wanted to show you the sierra snow pack update, we are for most of the sierra only at about 20 to 30% of normal for the amount of snow we should have at this point at the end of december, compare that to last year, we were at 72%, we know we had a lot more of those snowstorms rolling through and for this year it's been few and far between. hopefully we get some snow next week but it does look like for the next several days it does stay dry. also for the bay area a lot of storm systems rolling to the north of us but look at the change in our pattern as we go into next week, it does show a fairly significant storm system starting to move in by tuesday into wednesday that could bring us a decent amount of rain. i will continue to track that. in the meantime we will have a nice next several da

sierra and we are going to have all dry conditions driving down the central valley and into a few other states across the region. for tomorrow, the temperatures much warmer for southern california in the upper 60s. we'll have upper 50s around here and a few more clouds moving in, in advance of this storm system that will bring in light snow showers in time for christmas eve and early christmas morning. it will be a nice treat if you can make it there. here, only a slight chance of rain. i was so disappointed when i saw the computer model. it shows a little bit of rain coming through and got to the north bay and fizzled out. that's about what we can expect. i'm holding out hope that we will get rain in here, keeping that in the forecast on christmas day. be mindful, the chance is light. we have a dry forecast here and temperatures in the upper 50s and lower 60s. heading over to vianey now. >> an overall look at the bay area is looking good. nice and green. no major slowing in any areas. the south bay cleared out nicely. let's get to the drive times. southbound 101 to sfo 11 minutes

more snow in the sierra as well. looking at our seven-day forecast for san francisco, reaching into the mid 50s over the next several days, cold mornings, patchy frost and then going to see that rain moving in on christmas with some slightly milder temperatures and that will be here by the middle of next week. as we head back over to vianey, an update on the sig alerts. >> unfortunately we're starting off our thursday morning with a deadly crash so i'm going to get just right to it. we're still seeing that sig alert very much in place, it is still a hard closure which means all lanes are completely blocked off, they are not letting anybody on or off starting at southbound 880 at 66th avenue all lanes are completely blocked off. you can see the delay is already here. if you are headed in this direction, if you are planning to drive down from the east bay hop off on southbound 880 before fruitvale area. so definitely make sure to hop off before fruitvale avenue so you don't get caught up in this mess. they haven't given us an estimated time of when that is expected to open, but it is

christmas for the sierra. looks really good and then we will see a couple more waves of the rain moving through and also some cooler temperatures. we will still, though, be in the mid 60s for the next couple of days in san francisco, inland areas in the upper 60s and it's going to be gusty as we go into the weekend and we will talk more about that. as we head over to vianey now, any issues out there early? >> we're starting to see a couple accidents popping up on our traffic map. we've got this one in the south bay in san jose, looks to be a minor fender-bender and chp is already on its way out, possibly creating a road hazard, could be blocking the shoulder lane, so watch out for that if you're going to be driving by the south bay area, but i'm still looking out for this crash along eastbound 580, it looks like there is still deb dri in some lanes although i'm not catching any slow downs on our speed sensors. there is some slowing along the southbound 880 side so i will have to see what that's about, but that could just be early morning thursday pickup, we saw that pickup yester

palm springs. in the mountains, kind of warm, 54 for yosemite. 50 in the sierra nevada. you can see some of this snow here, some of it's real, some of it's man made, but still pretty good conditions with 25, overnight lows around 50 in the afternoon all weekend long. in oakland, mostly to partly cloudy skies. tonight, chilly with temperatures in the mid- to upper 30s in the valleys, closer to the water in the 40s. seven-day forecast featuring mostly cloudy skies, similar conditions tomorrow. for christmas day, we'll brighten up just a little bit with temperatures in the low to mid-60s bay side and inland. that should pretty much be the trend until the middle of the week when we get even milder. so yeah, we just will not break this ridge anytime soon. >> it's like rinse and repeat. lisa, thank you. >>> this family lost their home in the north bay wildfires. but earlier this week, they won a contest for a brand-new tiny house. abc 7 news reporter cornell barnard tells us the new pad is this family's dream come true.
