we all know the car break-ins in the city are out of control. when we moved into our house 17 years ago, broken glass on the street was a rarity. now it's a daily occurrence. just a few months ago my son's friend was mugged in the marina walking home from school. he's only in the 7th grade. the number of guns on our streets, the fact that our children now routinely face lockdown drills to plan in the event of a potential mass shooter is unacceptable. we have to do better. as a former prosecutor, i understand our criminal justice system and i understand that there must be consequences when people commit crimes. we must provide more resources for our police officers, our da's office and our courts so they can make a difference. the homeless issue in our city is a crisis, we all know that. my daughter cries every time she sees a homeless person. not because she's scared but because she's like me and it's hard for her to see someone suffer. we must see these individuals as human beings in need of help. i believe we can look to our nonprofits as mode

they are the descendants of many of the people named in this great city, helped to build this city, so thank you for leading on that. i also just want to add a couple of words to sharon hewitt's passing. sharon was actually one of the very first people i met on my first day of work at the housing authority. we battled every day. some of you might not believe, but i might have rubbed sharon the wrong way a few times, and she let me know about it every step of the way, but one of the proudest things i was involved in with her and president breed and i had this in common was we were both trying to build a recording studio. i was building a recording studio in sunni -- sunnyvale, and president breed was building another one at the same time. she went out of her way to prove how tough she was, and she went out of her way to prove it on a daily basis. but once you won her over, she was your mentor for life. i was proud to have been -- worked with her on the front lines out in sunnydale with daily gun shots and people diing. she was a front line person, and she had no fear. she would get in t

that's what we're about, we're the city of st. francis and we do that and this department does an amazing job to do that. but i'm not here to rubber stamp my budget and that's not my job and frankly commissioners, it's not your job either. you should look at the budget and say this is where we need help. as i look at the wish list that we have come up with, the department has come up with, this is not us, the department has come up with it and some of it is our input, we have things on there that's absolutely necessary for the city. a lot of the stations are rundown. the firefighters who live there love them dearly but a lot of them are run down. a lot of the trucks are breaking down and through the leadership of this commission, you guys did a great job of being the squeaky wheel before i got here to make sure we get more people and more rigs but the reason it happened is because you spoke out, not because you rubber-stamped a budget and that's your job and you guys did a great job of doing that. but there is more to be done for
