[applause] . >> the san francisco carbon fund was started in 2009. it's basically legislation that was passed by the board of supervisors and the mayor's office for the city of san francisco. they passed legislation that said okay, 13% of the cost of the city air travel is going to go into a fund and we're going to use the money in that fund to do local projects that are going to mitigate and sequester greenhouse gas emission. the grants that we're giving, they're anywhere from 15,000 to, say, $80,000 for a two year grant. i'm shawn rosenmoss. i'm the development of community partnerships and carbon fund for the san francisco department of environment. we have an advisory committee that meets once or twice a year to talk about, okay, what are we going to fund? because we want to look at things like equity and inno

was essentially an excuse for san francisco to throw a huge byty, and it was an attempt san francisco to demonstrate -- city boosters wanted to have a fair in order to mark that occasion and to demonstrate their strength to the rest of the nation and the world and to demonstrate their status in the pacific. >> this was more than a century ago. the fire had ended and they were rebuilding the city. what was the city like and how did men treat women? >> it probably depended on the man, but san francisco is interesting because california passed the suffrage amendment in 1911. women have the right to vote in california by 1915. in 1920 but some western states passed it on a state level. in some ways women in san francisco had more political options than they might have had in other parts of the country. certainly the notes the same type of the quality we're seeing now. san francisco was a cosmopolitan city. lots of immigrants and children of immigrants. was quite ethnically and religiously diverse. can the paint a picture. -- >> paint a picture. if you were to walk to that exhibition, what

[applause] >> one day after his inauguration, we passed the american recovery and reinvestment act. for our region, that meant a billion dollars for the central subway. studio parkway over $300 million, the caltrain electrification, almost a billion dollars, over $400 million for this.

i want to thank the public utilities commission, the san francisco m.t.a., the san francisco planning department, the county transportation authority, and when i was on the board and the county transportation authority, i hope to leave the efforts to secure the additional funding we needed to get this project on. i want to thank the san francisco arts commission and so many that have made it possible. this project, overall, improves public safety, creates new open space for our community, and strengthens our infrastructure for years to come. when i was supervisor, high, michael, one of the leaders who basically helped move this project forward, thank you so much for being here and your advocacy of getting this project done. when i was on the board of supervisors, one of the persons in my office to help deal with many of those complaints and challenges from the folks who lived here and work here was, at the time, my legislative aide, vallie brown. she is now the supervisor to represent this district. ladies and gentlemen, district five supervisor, vallie brown. to stay in san francisco. i am not seeing the same housing opportunities we had back then. even as artists with part-time jobs, we were able to pool our money together and buy something. keeping people housed in a neighborhood that they love and creating more housing, affordable housing, it will be one of my top priorities as a supervisor. not far from here, i started my community activism. we worked to create a supervisor -- supervisor breed mentioned we work to create a neighborhood association and we cling to the streets. we helped the school, the elementary school. we improve the public safety. we planted trees. i realized that the power of a community coming together to tackle issues in a neighborhood. it wasn't easy. it taught me that it is possible. i also discovered that i love community work. yes.
