i am emily chang in san francisco. we are halfway through the year and we have seen a number of tech companies hit the public market. sonos makingify, debuts. if the pace holds, the number of tech ipo's in the u.s. will have returned to levels not seen since 2013 and 2014. how will the rest of the year play out? joining us, our bloomberg ipo and tech reporter. spent the last several months trying to tackle this market. what has been so unique about the last six months? jackie: technology has been exceedingly active, and i know we have been waiting for this to come back. the last couple quarters have been exciting. we are definitely seeing technology companies themselves, and tech businesses in general really eager to get out. i think a lot of this is driven by the fact we have been in such a strong economic market now for a number of years. everybody wants to access this window. emily: will it continue? q1 are going to be very busy markets for us. emily: i am curious. the bull market has been going on so long, conditio

we had very humble beginnings at index just a few years ago when we opened up our san francisco office, and we've come a long way from that. fundamentally, embedding in companies that are a little bit contrarian, like sonos, for example. we've begun to find our stride. not every year will look like this year. but we are humbled by the work these entrepreneurs do and thankful we have gotten here. emily: what does the future hold? do you see as many opportunities for investment? do you see more opportunity in the public markets with uber and airbnb? mike: this is an exciting time in the investment business. one, the landscape is changing. we are seeing an influx of capital. the likes of sequoia and softbank are raising new funds. we are seeing new names show up in the business that historically in venture was mostly dominated by a small number of well-known brands. at the same time, investing is becoming more global. you are finding companies in europe, like one of ours that did incredibly well, or spotify. you are seeing a rise in china. los angeles and new york are creating terrific ve

in late july san francisco based asset manager bitwise filed for a fund that would track not only bit coin but other crypto currencies, the first application of its kind. others have filed for bit coin nly e.t.f.'s but the bid was rejected. why does bitwise believe it has a stronger case? the c.e.o. is here with me now. why do you think you have a better shot? >> thanks. so the news from us is that we just filed the first ever s-1 prospectus. for the first crypto currency on e.t.f. the distinction is since 2013 people have been filing for e.t.f.'s that would just track bit coin and provide investors with bit coin and we filed for an index product so a basket of 10 coins. we've been managing a private version of the funds open to investors today since last year. in our experience managing that product our feeling is that the issues you have to get comfortable with to approve an e.t.f., a listed vehicle, custody, trading, taxes, how you value the assets these arl things we've been dealing with since launching our private vehicle last year. we think you can effectively operate a public v

you know, why stay in san francisco at all? peter is in l.a. could you see the firm moving elsewhere, or do you see potential elsewhere? if so, where? cyan: it is always possible. we are not discussing it right now. i do think we have started looking outside of silicon valley for other possibilities, like the next great company might not be in our backyard. so we have looked at the midwest. we are looking at asia, we are looking all over the place. and so we are no longer location specific. so we are sector agnostic, location agnostic, stage agnostic. and so i think that is just -- we are not going to stop investing here, and we are not going to stop being here in the foreseeable future. emily: i am interested in diversity issues, and you have spoken out on them. you are a self-taught engineer and entrepreneur. what do you think is missing from the conversation about diversity in silicon valley? cyan: diversity is often sometimes things you do not see. it is sometimes not what is on the outside. for example, i identify as gender queer, and by t
