, sherrod brown, and he said ohio was not properly represented by their democratic senator, sherrod brown, because he did not get the point across. joining me now is the senator who spoke to the president last night. what did you talk about? >> he talked about -- well, he and i -- i first approached president trump way earlier in the year and we had a long conversation in june and i asked him to step in there because the second shift, already 3,000 people had been laid off and the president didn't do anything. i reached him last night and he said he wanted to help and i said the first thing you can help is take away the provision in the tax bill that gives a company 50% off in taxes. if you pay a 21% tax rate and if you move to mexico, you pay a 10% tax break. he was not really aware of that, but he said he would help and he said he would sign on to my american jobs, american cars act which will incent car buying for buying american cars. he said he wants to help. he put he in touch with his u.s. trade representative, an ohioian, i might add. we will move forward and hope it gets through congress.

have time to find that kind of an ideal ticket well above sherrod brown the senator from ohio i think that he would be a potential good candidate except ohio is the only state that went the other way in this last election cycle ohio went from being somewhat democratic to less democratic and it apparently was because we just didn't pay the same amount of attention as we did to michigan as we did to west constance as we did to kansas as we did to texas all across the country dramatic gains were made in some places not complete like in georgia of florida but certainly advances almost no place did we slip backwards except in want to two places and ohio was one of the ways we slipped backwards i think mr brown senator brown is a great potential candidate however i do think you have to kind of bring your state along do you expect a crowded field in the primaries. i do anticipate lots of noise and activities i hope however we will not get into a situation in which we take away from the potential to win the general election by waste and all our far power in the primary we didn't do that when

find it interesting to see yesterday's sherrod brown, he did pretty well. he won i believe it was about 53-47. for the senate seat. in just about every other statewide race the democrats just -- they weren't crushed. when you look at the governor's race where mike dewine beat cordray, i would say that was also 53-47. when they ran against each for attorney general back in 2010, that was within a percentage point. it upsets me a little bit that the democrats -- we focus too much on all the issues that are going on that we don't have enough time to stop and say what are we doing wrong? that's how we end up being able to take the house by a slim margin but lose the senate. we made some good gains in some of the gubernatorial races yesterday. host: let me ask you about the governor's race. the one with mike dewine, former senator, and richard cordray, former head of the consumer financial protection bureau. were you expecting mr. cordray to win that race? caller: i don't know if i was expecting him to win simply because when you look at name recognition in ohio, mike dewine has been a

here. because if i'm not mistaken, i think sherrod brown won re-election handedly in ohio. democrats own virginia, and virginia is not the most metropolitan state out there. north carolina, democrats have a democratic governor and attorney general, et cetera, et cetera. so it's not as if democrats are not doing well in rural america. democrats can do better in rural america. but the map has fundamentally changed, to gloria's point. you remember this. in 2008, we were talking about indiana, missouri, we were talking about iowa, ohio, pennsylvania. all of these swing states. it was a list of 11 or 12. and now when we get to 2020, we're going to be talking about wisconsin, pennsylvania, michigan, and florida, as your top tier? and you're going to then move to the second tier, some of these other areas, you'll have north carolina -- i mean, i don't even know if virginia is there anymore. but you have these places, ohio, where democrats are doing extremely well, because democrats are engaging a new demographic. and that's why they'll do well. democrats are engaging a new demogr

. similarly in ohio, sherrod brown, the incumbent and the republican challenger, too early to call in ohio as well. take a look at the balance of power, where things stand in the senate right now, 25 democrats will be in the senate. 42 republicans but 33 seats remain outstanding right now. we're watching those 33 seats. remember, democrats must pick up 2 republican seats, not lose any of their own to get to the magic number of 51 in order to be the majority. we're looking at florida right now. all of a sudden, the numbers are coming in, the votes are coming in. >> they are, wolf. and we've seen some frantic tweets from the senate republican marco rubio, begging republicans to go out and vote and look at the numbers, this tells you why. the democratic incumbent, bill nelson, is ahead, 51.4%. rick scott, the republican challenger, is trailing at 48.6% with a third of the vote in now. so we're watching florida incredibly closely right now. the democrat is doing pretty well considering how tight of a race we thought this was going to be. indiana, another just like florida, the story is that this

trump. sherrod brown talked about what to do running against trump. >> i won my election because i talk about the dignity of work. whether i run or not, i'm hopeful that narrative and message begins to be part of that narrative among my colleagues who want to be president and who have dreamed of it for longer than i have. >> aaron? >> the fact that we're talking about sherrod brown running and beto o'roarke running suggestions this is going to be a huge field. i think it's tempting to break this down from the progressives and somebody like brown who is more of a populist, maybe more moderate. it's going to be a free for all. i don't think this is going to break down neatly along lines in a lot of the same ways the republican race didn't break down along the lines we expected it to. if you're beto o'roarke, i'm not sure you're looking at it making a strategic decision beyond saying look at what i did. i came close in texas. closer than any other democrat. he's going to have a seat at the table the moment he runs. >> i talked to a democratic strategist over the weekend. i was like it

. especially in the senator's race. sherrod brown outspending the gop candidate. one of the voters picked up on that theme when i asked why it was so close. take a listen. >> i think sherrod brown has a lot more money and probably paid for a lot more advertising. but i think the people are going to prove strong for renacci. >> reporter: what about the other race? >> diviewine has it in the bag. >> reporter: when you look across the map, in places like ohio, brown has a strong in-state brand. that's helping him. you're also seeing it help other democrats across the board. joe manchin, he's polling consistently ahead of the republican there. when you're seeing democrats with strong in state brands, sometimes it helps them overcome demographic shifts that have happened in their states. ohio continues to be swinging. we'll see how it swings on election night. >> all right. allie, thank you. let's go to garrett haake standing by for us in houston now following arguably the biggest senate race. one of the three or four biggest senate races happening tomorrow. houston, texas is where you are. houst
