jason: wall street to washington. president trump's tweets on trade policy with china, and the subsequent walk backs, fueled this week's market jitters. carol: and for the robert mueller probe, there is a lot to unpack. josh green joining from washington. josh, a lot of things going on. i feel like u.s. and china trade are obviously front and center. a new twist with the arrest of the cfo of the big chinese company huawei. what are the implications of this? josh: washington is now as riveted by the trade war as the markets have been for quite a while. there was hope into g20 that trump would try and strike a conciliatory tone. there was not any real hope among political folks that there would be any meaningful trade deal. both parties were looking for some sign the trade war was not going to worsen in advance. we got that in the near term. trump saying that it was a positive meeting. trump tweeted claims that the u.s. auto tariffs had been removed. that sort of thing. it was a best case reaction. only one day later, t

firsthand i know about all of this. >> jason: tammy, this is broader than just the wall. i know the discussion is about the wall. the wall is important. put something in between those who want to come north. it is bigger and broader than just the human trafficking and bringing kids across the border. drugs and guns and all the other things that come along with that. and we don't know how this person that has been identified as the police. we don't know how this person got here. could have come under a visa and be a visa overstay. but there still is need to build the wall and create an impediment, correct? >> there's the literalness of that, jason. but there's also the psychology of it. it's a statement to individuals like this criminal, who thought he would just come over. the individuals, brazilian murderers who ice has caught who they had to send back to brazil. there's this message that this is the place to escape to if someone else is looking for you. or that, in fact, if america doesn't care about its border security and doesn't care about crime and what's happening

what jason chaffetz didn't mention is it was not solely about the border act, the border wall aspect of it. it was about smart and effective strategies, drones, different ways of approaching border security. i find it interesting there has been a shift in the talking points on republicans to broaden this out the border security. this does come down to the fact the president thinks compromise is a bad word and republicans need to really look internally at remember when they use to criticize democrats for making policy from polling and now you have a president making policy from political commentators getting under his skin. this was dealt with earlier this week. >> not true. shannon: i know that they'll come back, we have to get to chad program for breaking news and explanation for what is going on. please stick around, brad, we will give you the first start at this but we have this question about members of congress getting paid while this is happening and hundreds of thousands of federal employees may not. how does this work. >> members of congress will get paychecks and they are be

jason: so where is the real negotiating point here? president is very firm or a has-been, at least publicly, about his demands for funding the wall or some version of it. presidente heard vice pence and others have had a meeting and that may be number is not exactly what he needs to be. where do you see a potential compromise? >> again, it will have to take time. after we have that change in power with speaker pelosi taking over, then we will have a period of income in bills between the -- have athe senate ping-ponging of bills between the house and the senate. the democrats give a bit more money but dedicate that to alternative avenues of border security, such as surveillance, etc. that's the 1st avenue. that allows both avenues to save face. democrats can say we did not caved to the president's $5 billion number, and the president can say he doubled what the democrats initially offered me. and now what we are hearing more is the democrats' push for peripheral policy concessions as a part of this. would they say we will find your wall
