"the wall street journal" yesterday, in fact, published a story where they quoted president trump talking to a person familiar saying look if you need to get with me, don't call john, call nick, he's my guy. today president trump said there will probably be an interim chief of staff to be announced at a later date. nick ayers is at the top of the list. we'll have to see just who the president decides to bring into that key role because at this point, you have to imagine that white house is certainly focused on being a sure-footing heading tho into the president's re-election campaign and the onslaught of potential investigations and subpoenas coming from house democrats when control of the congress switches in january. that will be at the forefront of the activity and the forefront of thought of this new chief of staff coming to the white house. >> all right. jeff, please stay with us. we want to get more from you in a moment. joining me, jill colevin white house reporter for the asso

general john kelly on his way out the door, nick ayers says he'll pass on the job. now we're hearing representative mark meadows is reportedly being floated as a possible replacement. but the question here, how difficult will it be for this administration to find anyone to step into a role that, as short history suggests, is a dead end job from the start? >> reporter: well, clearly there will be someone. the question is who, with what credibility will they have externally because it's proven to be a very difficult role to fill successfully. one needs the loyalty of a president whose whims cal, who is very emotional, but also needs to be able to, to have the loyalty, to have the support of kushner, of ivanka, of a number of people who come first for the president, and to manage what's been a very chaotic white house. so you can see why for a lot of very serious people it's not tremendously appealing, but it is an important role. and the turnover in this i think is deeply disturbing. >> the other big story that we're following, the president starting this week under t

nick, let me start with you. in all the filings that were released on friday, is the president correct in saying that? >> first of all, he admits he didn't read the mueller filing which absolutely puts him right into the middle of the conspiracy between the russian government and the campaign, the same one that 13 russian intelligent operate jafs have already been charged with this past july. if you look what cohen has said and what mueller has said and you put it together with other facts like the statement that was made before the senate committee when he lied about trump tower date when it ended, and there's more to it than that. if you go up on that statement, there's a whole bunch of other item that he denied being involved in, most notably that meeting that occurred in prague after manafort left the campaign. if you look at this you see as of september the first meeting he had with the mueller group he was still lying. the second meeting the memo makes clear cohen came clean on everything related to the rus

you mentioned in the lead-in that nick ayers has agreed to do this on an interim basis. the reason for that is he had long planned to go back to his home in georgia at the understand of the year due to him and his wife having a young family. they have 6-year-old triplets. the president wanted him to commit, this is what we're told by sources familiar, the president wanted him to commit to doing two years, to filling out the end of the term, but that nick ayers wasn't able to do that. yesterday you saw the president not naming ayers but saying who the replacement for kelly would be would do it on an interim basis. nick ayers has a well-earned reputation for being polarizing, figure being hard charging. there's stalk of staffers here at the white house who say they will not work for him. but if the president ultimately turns to someone else, then that list includes steve mnuchin, the current treasury secretary, robert lighthizer, or nick mulvaney who wears a number of hats. he's the budget director. we're waiting for the official announcement, but we do expect that nick ay

recentlyof: nick, you retired, semiretired from the museum. you are still in the thick of things as ceo emeritus. what prompted you to write this book? dr. mueller: in a way, we have come full circle. it is the same thing that motivated steve and me to begin to develop this museum. those personal stories. the 75th anniversary was coming up a year ago this past summer, and i was talking to steve watson and i said, we really ought to do something for world war ii. down.tepping now may be a good time to focus on developing our oral histories, and he said yes. it is a tribute to the guys who were there. i mean, the long and the short of it. it is a tribute to those guys, ordinary guys, who took part in this epic battle. you have on the screen the epic nature of this battle. were not going to go into that. we tell a little bit about that. it is the big picture that shows gamble at stake here. we are looking at it from a birds eye view. these ordinary guys. ofas motivated to bring part their great stories to the view. it's also a tribute to steve ,

nick: clearly. in a sense because the french had been expeled from canada the americans would feel confident the way they did about their position, yes, absolutely, exactly. but i think you have to bear in mind of course the british didn't necessarily believe the expulsion from french and canada had been permanent. they were concerned there might be attempt by france and spain to reobtain. that was a thought. the french stood in the way and were in haiti and the spanish were across the mississippi and from a british point of view hadn't been a totally inclusive campaign. but you're right. the american colonies couldn't have been as confident or assertive as they were if the french had been present in anada, absolutely, yeah. >> richard davies. could you tell us a little bit morment about the british political establishment at the time? you mentioned the privy counsel which now is largely ceremonial. parliament, was there a strong debate going on about this whole matter? nick: oh, yes, absolutely. th

nick is much younger than john kelly. if does become the replacement, he would be much younger than some of the people supposed to report to him. that would be different. >> i'm curious because we heard this before. we've heard it before many times that john kelly is on his way out. i wonder if you got an indication from the folks you talked to why this time might be different? >> a couple of things. we're at a point in a dprenz si that's typical for the president to change a chief of staff if he was looking to do something like that. the president is pivoting toward his re-election campaign. john kelly had gotten on the wrong side of the first lady which is bad place to be for any staffer in the white house. there's an accumulation of frustrations with john kelly. the president has gone back and forth for months about whether he wants to keep him in the line. the president had seen a possibility for an alternative. >> bill, remember when kelly was brought on after reince priebus. he was supposed to bring stability and di

>> nick, i want you to weigh in on this here. so does this mean, first of all, that mueller is going to have to basically come up with more evidence here? >> no, i think he's got plenty of evidence. if you look at this memo he filed with the court, it's obvious he's got taped conversations, he's got e-mails, he's got documents. i mean, he's even got manafort's lawyers' own notes where they recited to him what he said about kilimnik, then he changes his story completely another occasion. i don't know why they're asking for more time here. maybe they think they can finally get their client to cooperate. i don't know. it doesn't make a lot of sense, because it's a very, very strong case based on what i've seen here that he's violated that cooperation agreement. >> that tar shark talk about the prospect that paul manafort has been lying to his legal team, that they don't actually know what's been going, they have to circle back with their own client to find out what's going on before they can give an answer to mueller's filings. >> y

arthel: did you see controversy around nick ayers or controversial figure? >> so my colleagues have reported at axios that there are detractors of his within the administration and white house currently, not everyone loves him. he's been controversial in the past based he's young and done well financially, he's seen as ambitious, some people within republican circles that he's rubbed the wrong way, yes. arthel: currently working for the vice president and we haven't heard of any controversy have we, have you reported on that? >> no, as i was just saying, no drama, no drama coming out of there, little to no controversy, you're right, we have not seen in this administration. right, the question going forward is the reason why the chief of staff's position is important is how does the administration handle the onslaught of democratic subpoenas of the mueller administration, of the 2020 reelection campaign and things that the white house is going to have to deal with. clearly the president did not feel that kelly was the right person for this position heading fo
