vallie brown. i've only worked at hard-to-staff schools in the tenderloin, bayview, and the mission. for me to afford a high quality preschool, i have to send my twins to school in oakland. prop g -- before prop g was passed, i was offered a position in redwood city making $7500 a year. i didn't want to accept it, because how could i live with myself, knowing i was leaving our students in the hands of another teacher or worse, l long-term subssubs. students are experiencing incredible trauma. they struggle academically. homeless need beds in this city, but they need schools, to be the structural and safe setting so they can ultimately learn. vallie brown, i, a black public schoolteacher who started her career in sfusd, i have two teaching credentials from s.f. state and national certification, i won't be able to afford my two kids to go to presill in my own community. please consider the funding necessary to fund our public schools. black teachers matter, blood count students matter. thank you. >> chair fewer: thank you. next speaker, please. >> i was born in tijuana, baja californi

vallie brown. >> yes. thank you, chair mandelman. i'm just frustrated because, you know, as we talk about sweeps, i, as in what supervisor mandelman had been talking about, going to neighborhood meetings, and people being frustrated, frustrated of how the city handles the homeless issue. and i even have a situation where i have neighbors going outline a vigilante group to deal with the homeless. and my fear is someone is going to get hurt. and so how do you respond when we go out and -- believe mu me, i've been shouted down by my neighborhood meetings of how we handle the homeless situation. my issue is there is nowhere for people to go. and that's my biggest issue. when i was an aide five years ago, i see sam dodge out there -- we were out looking for navigation center sites, and we kind of got in trouble because we were looking in golden gate park. but this is my feeling: we keep saying that this is a crisis, but our actions are not like it is a crisis. if we had an earthquake today and we lost our homes, where would we be camping out? in the parks. we would be in the parks. why i

working very closely with you, also with vallie brown in district five, and matt haney who was recently elected, and all the supervisors. looking forward, also, i want to say that we will continue to be one of the most diverse offices in the country. every year we put out an annual report, and this year we celebrate women defenders. our office has over half of our leadership and half of our staff are women. forty% are people of color. about 20% are lgbtq. i am so proud of the diversity. y.? because we also represent the population that we serve and that is absolutely critical going forward and it makes me very proud that we are one of the most diverse offices in the country. before i sit down, i do want to thank three people who happened to be women, and presents them with some flowers. first i would like to thank my wife, who has been great support [applause] >> when i was running for office , she used to get in fights with people on the street about who to vote for. neighborhood council, the panhandle neighborhood association, and supervisor vallie brown. staff recommends that the commission award a construction contract as previously indicated i'm happy to answer any questions. >> thank you. >> i do have one card for public comments. jane. >> hello, commissioners. it has been a while since i spoke. i wanted to add my support. i am probably a large part of that robust public involvement in the panhandle playground and the group that i have been with over the last two years. i would say the panhandle playground is a success in many of the let's play s.f. community relationships. and for those commissioners who have been helpful, i very much appreciate that. won the panhandle playground came to our attention, it was about midway of the let's go s.f. initiative, we are still about halfway through. one of the cautions i would go out there is to ensure that they continue to not just listen to the community as they did. haven't gone to the first meeting of the golden gate heights high ground as well, it was a welcome introduction to that playground, and offe

heritage centre. it will begin at 12 p.m. mayor breed will speak, as well as supervisor vallie brown, the gathering will highlight african-american people for an african-american achievements. we will have musical performances, spoken word, food, and more. we are inviting the public to attend that event. community engagement division highlights for the week include the presidio day hike with an elementary school. this was on february 7th. we had our officers from the bayview were taking youth from bayview to a college and career fair in oakland this weekend as well. for the month of january, highlight on some of our community engagement events included our police activity award that happened on january 11th where youth that participated in the 40 niners football, and cheer team were awarded certificates and trophies for participating in the program. that, by the way, there are officers and coaches for that program, and it is a good community police endeavoured art -- endeavoured to get kids involved in sports and cheering. on general 28, our cadets had an exercise program. officers are tr
