chris: yes. susan: how long did you do it? chris: 20 years. susan: how did your life sell change? chris: quite a bit. me and my family would like to say we did not change much, but i think over time. i got paid more my first year than my father ever made. 10 times more than i got as a grad student. you know, we lived what i thought was a relatively modest life but it wasn't. we had a big apartment in brooklyn, and sent our kids to a private school and did all of the things you do when you live in new york city as a wealthy person. susan: what happened? chris: i always was -- i always took walks to relieve stress, like 20 miles. being something of a science geek, i made a goal to walk the entire length of the new york city subway system above ground. i had done that and i realized at some point that i had not gone to the bronx. i called them my terminus walks, i would walk along the route. in 2008 during the financial crisis, my life changed dramatically because of the financial crisis. my kids we

chris. >> thanks. i think this is an interesting discussion to have. i think in washington what we tend to have, we have everyone sort of spends their whole career in the policy silos. i spent all of my life in health care policy talking with health care policy people having the same discussions about health care policy and nothing much about immigration and you guys are all presumably somewhat somewhat similar and think that much of the details of health care and yet, the first thing i think, suddenly i notice and everyone in my world notices is the health care is enormously complicated sector policy, the rules, the entitlement rules, the regulations associated with health insurance are very, very difficult and these guys have done a great job in terms of like trying to understand it, trying to penetrate really what's going on and trying to interpret and really approach it from an outsider's perspective. as someone who spends their life working on health care policy i'm kind of impressed how well you've done really trying to make sense of it all. the

grace: do we all look at chris? chris: the answer is i do not know how money and politics have worked in the maine congressional elections. that is what i was thinking about. i'm not sure yet. >> the most interesting experiment is that if they do it in new york and new york city has what i think is a kind of ideal system of matching funds for small contributions, that will be interesting. of course, more candidates means that the money is potentially mattering more if a bunch have too little to get to the gate, but maybe ranked choice voting will help. grace: at the same time you are eliminating the cost of a runoff election. citywide, you are also saving money to fund the candidates. mark: i did want to talk a little bit about what you have seen go into the idea catching on, and what seems to happen and what seems to click in a community where people get interested in the idea, and move it forward, and then i want to talk about challenges. any of you. grace: there is a lot of different places where we are talking a
