. >> cyril vanier spoke with danny mackie who stribed what it was like in damascus as those air strikes were bearing down. >> in the early hours of yesterday morning, around 4:30, there was a number of u.s.-led attacks near damascus in different segments and parts of the city. and i essentially awoke to what was about 12 different strikes, consecutively, one after the other. it was pretty terrifying initially. after the situation cleared initially, you had syrian air defenses began to launch s-200 missiles and tracer fire at the sky in an attempt to down some of the rockets coming through but to no avail. the attack continued for about 50 continuous minutes with temporary pauses in between. after different waves targeted different buildings. and what i could gauge initially from the area i'm currently located in in western damascus was that three different military sites were targeted after the first wave. one of those was the research center in east damascus which has been used as a research laboratory and has a relation to the issue of chemical weapons. some have been technologically

cyril vanier joins me. good to see you, cyril. masks are the most powerful weapon we have to fight a virus. how are parisians responding to this mask mandate? >> reporter: rosemary, from what i can see by and large, parisians are okay with this. we are on the 102 streets in paris that have been designated a compulsory facemask. not everybody knows. not everybody knows that they're supposed to wear a facemask here. in fairness to them, there was supposed to be signage in front of the roads where facemasks are compulsory. i haven't seen anything warning people they need to wear a facemask here. we did see police earlier today walking up and down the street. they weren't fining people, there is a fine, about $160 if you don't wear a mask. they weren't fining anyone, they were gently reminding them. i think at this stage it's about building habits, not punishment. france is doing this, paris is doing this and other cities in frons are doing this pause they have been trending in the wrong direction for several weeks with a spike. in fa

cyril vanier has reported from inside afghanistan and for the latest, he is tracking events now from london. certainly, this breaking news coming that jalalabad has fallen, what does that mean? >> it means the -- the advance of the taliban is almost unstoppable, at this stage. yesterday, robyn, when we spoke, half of the provincial capitals were under taliban control. now, it's more than two-thirds. that's in the space of 24 hours. we're talking about a big country. it is stunning that the taliban are able to take that much ground. now, the explanation for this, robyn, is that a lot of these territories and provincial capitals are falling to them -- um -- not after a protracted battle but after a surrender. the -- either, the local-government authorities or the security forces, either, through negotiation or simply through fleeing the cities that they're supposed to protect, just essentially hand them over, de facto, to the taliban. and that is what happened, for instance, in mazar-i-sharif, a town that fell in the last-24 hours. the biggest town in the north. an area that is, tradit

in the mean chime, we have cyril vanier, from london. cyril, i want to go back to that last line from clarissa's excellent report. an all but certain victory. is that the way it looks? >> reporter: certainly, the fighting today, the taliban have all the momentum at the moment. the afghan national army says it has increased the pace of air raids against the taliban, especially in the south of the country. unclear if that's making an advance. this morning, taliban claims it has breached the defenses of other provincial capital. and paktika, closer to the capital. again, the taliban gaining ground. it is not clear whether they can be stopped. it is not clear whether the afghan army is making any inroads into their advance. now, a senior u.s. administration official who is familiar eye were the thinking of the community on this, told cnn earlier this week, it was expected kabul could fall within one to three months. however, the u.s. has severely miscalculated the speed of the taliban in the last few days. could this be another misclarm misc

i'm joined by cyril vanier in paris. great to see you, cyril. how are european countries responding to surging covid cases of both major variants? >> rosemary, first thing is european countries are really scratching their heads. so, most of them have implemented some short-term measures to deal with the peak of the delta variant wave right now and the impending surge in omicron-fuelled cases coming over -- coming to them in the next few weeks. that's the short-term. more longer-term, they're thinking how do we get everybody vaccinated. you have some countries closing their borders. you have france, germany, they've essentially closed their borders to travellers coming from the uk because they think that will help them slow down the importing of omicron variant. you have some countries that have imposed curfews. that's the case in ireland. you have a country like denmark that has essentially shut down its cultural scene. that's not just theaters and museums and art galleries. it's also entertainment venues. it's parks, zoos. and so you have all t

cyril vanier is with us. selma, the prime minister is clearly under pressure to act. how likely are further restrictions at this stage? >> reporter: i think everyone is waking up asking this morning, will there, will there not be a lockdown for christmas. you saw the numbers over the weekend and over last week. tens of thousands of positive cases every single day breaking records that have not been seen since the start of this pandemic. over the weekend the london mayor declared a major incident in the city saying further infections are inevitable. there are new statistics that say without further restrictions in place this country could see 3,000 people a day arriving in hospital. they blame this on the omicron variant. they are pushing the government for tougher measures before the end of the year. every day is important when you're in the crucial period between the positive cases and hospitalizations. all of these huge surge of positive cases we're seeing right now will translate a couple of weeks into some people showing up in hospital sick putting pressure on the
