chief meteorologist paul deanno is tracking it all for us now. paul? >> lots more snow to come this week in the sierra. i'll show you numbers from a pretty promising march. right now we're getting a bit of a break. i'm pinpointing a few heavier showers over glen ellen, very specific because it's not widespread. we'll zoom out. the majority of the bay area is dry, one new shower developing oval immediate a. that will -- over alameda. top of the month snowpack in california was 19%. it has nearly doubled in less than two weeks. we're going from 19% to 36%. i'm hopeful will be in the mid- 40s by the end of this week with perhaps more snow in the second half of march, wonderful news there. it is cooler outside, temperatures falling throughout the afternoon. we're now down to 54 in livermore, 59 in san jose, not much rain but plenty of clouds and the clouds will keep us mild overnight, fremont 47, napa 43, san rafael, 50 for a low in san francisco. we had a boundary move through this morning, but that's not the end of the rain story because the area of low

paul deanno is tracking the storm's path. paul? >> i tell you what, when we compare what is going on there to the worst that has ever happened in bay area history, it's not even close. michael made landfall today with 155 miles an hour sustained winds. not gusts. sustained winds. in the history of the downtown san francisco weather recording station which is back to the time of the civil war, the strongest we have ever had in san francisco is 51 miles an hour. which by the way is actually quite strong. but, 1/3 as fast as what we saw in florida just today. we just don't get the weather that we can get through hurricanes here in the bay area. and we should be very thankful for that. 70s in our warmest spots today. concord, napa, fremont, 71. we have a moderate on shore flow keeping temperatures down inland. the cooling will continue through wednesday. today, thursday, and, then we see an abrupt change. much warmer beginning friday. this ridge of high pressure is lifting to the north. odd, but that's where it's going allowing an area

. >> let's get to meteorologist paul deanno with more on the roughest surf in a couple of years now, paul. >> this is significant stuff. the ocean is stronger than we all give it credit for on a normal day. this is not normal coming up sunday. the swells will be running 17 to 21 feet. normal in the wintertime is 6 to 10 feet. so that's strong. the breakers, the breaking waves on top of that, 25 to 40 feet or higher. so it's very wise to watch from a distance. i'm talking don't even go on the beach itself because the higher the wave is, the farther it pushes inland, it can carry you out in very short order, likely the highest surf since january, 2017, that from the weather service this morning. as we look at the radar right now, this particular front that's moving through, yes, it's drizzly and roads are a bit wet, but widespread rain we aren't seeing. we have some rain in the north bay and out towards solano county, fairfield, yountville, santa rosa, glen ellen and napa getting light rain. that's about it. we'll see scattered showers overnight and through the morning hours. most of s

here's kpix 5 chief meteorologist paul deanno. paul? >> liz, the north bay is up first. we're looking at rain moving into the north bay right now. that rainfall is moving into napa county. san francisco, just away from getting some of the rainfall. napa county, marin county, sonoma county currently getting the rainfall. we'll sjsu in -- we'll zoom in to napa. petaluma getting wet, st. helena, st. rosa getting wet. mend see -- futurecast, south of the golden gate, the storm will be moving through. then on saturday another round of showers will likely move through in the afternoon. the window of opportunity there from 4:00 to 8:00 in the afternoon and evening. we will likely see additional showers. this means more snow for the sierra, my gosh have they received a ton of snow in the past couple of weeks. up to 30 inches of additional snowfall in the higher peaks of the sierra, adding to an already improved snow pack. it was 19% above average. triple that as of today. it is 56% above average. there is a clear ending to this rain. when a dry pattern takes over, we'll talk abo

first kpix 5 chief meteorologist paul deanno. paul? >> some people will hear the rain pounding since last night. it has not let up for 23 hours. we are looking at kpix 5 high- def doppler radar, which is active over the entire bay area from top to bottom all the way south of san jose and morgan hill. hasn't let up for nearly a day. that's you in sonoma county, where it has been pouring in all day. napa, marin county, one of the hardest hit areas. richmond, concord, martinez, the city of san francisco. one of the wettest days in the city's history. right now number 20 all time and the steady rainfall does move all the way down to san jose. look at the past three hours. it's almost like nothing is changing. it just continues to see waves and waves of rainfall moving in. i'm finally being able to see a break in the rainfall off camera there, but we will have at least two to three hours of heavy rainfall. marin county, coming up on five inches of rain. in the santa cruz mountains, more than four inches of rain officially in san francisco.

here's kpix 5 chief meteorologist, paul deanno. paul? >> we've had more hail than rainfall in the bay area over the past couple of weeks. another round of hail with cold unstable air aloft in the area of low pressure that went right down through the central valley right now. the hills surrounding it including snow continuing to fall in and around just to the east of mount hamilton and also a few flakes of snow over the santa cruz mountains. mount diablo getting a break. it has seen some snow off and on, drying out in concord and also walnut creek. let's show you what it looks like. another location that saw some hail earlier today. pellets of ice hitting the ground are, also hitting the windshield as you can see in a second. not just a little bit of hail, but a truckload full of hail in our state capital, sacramento. kids were out having a hail ball fight if you will. going out there, enjoying what looks like a snowstorm in sacramento. not snow, but hail and a lot of it. how much rain fell? this is the best part of it. hail is not going

chief meteorologist paul deanno is here with more. paul? >> liz, we're talking about above 1,000 feet in elevation, siesta north bay hills and east bay hills. that's where it will be windy and take the fire danger which is high anywhere in the bay area, but in the hills where it will be windy beginning tonight through sunday morning, that's going to drop the humidity because it's an offshore wind. the winds will be gusty 40 to 60 miles per hour. that will take the fire danger from high to critical. we've done this several times over the past couple weeks and we will continue to do it every time we get an offshore wind until it rains. when does that first decent rainfall occur? let's look at the past three years. 0.1-inch of rain or more was right around this time in 2017 and 2015. it was mid-october in 2016. i'm here to tell you that it looks very dry for at least the next week. so we will be past due when it comes to that first decent rainfall. that's what we need, though. we'll talk more about the seven- day forecast coming up in a few sh

here is kpix 5 chief meteorologist paul deanno with more. paul? >> ken, it is still snowing in and around mount hamilton tonight. high elevation snow in the bay area, scattered showers continue becoming less numerous. often happens this time of night. let's take a look at radar. the snow showers are east of san jose. that white is not rain, that is snow falling just east of san jose in fremont. heavier showers on top of fremont. light rain for danville and livermore. we'll zoom in on a heavier shower moving over san pablo bay. that has its sights set on vallejo and hercules. the sierra, that is it. it has been snowing heavy all night long for a couple of hours. it was snowing at a clip of four inches of snow per hour. additional snowfall between now and 10:00 tomorrow night when this winter storm warning could end. we could see another two to four feet. lots of trouble for those heading up to the mountains. it'll be rough out there. scatteredownpours will continue through tomorrow. any heavier shower contains small hail. we'll talk about what happ
