armstrong almost died was when he was working for nasa when it was still called the nasa. and he was still out in the antelope valley valley in california and you heard all about this. this is where chuck jager broke the sound barrier and neil was flying an arm and he was working with a lot of other people. in this moment he is copiloting that b29 up there and they are faring another pilot in that skyrocket down below. in this picture the skyrocket has already been released. at the time i'm talking the skyrocket is still attached to that b29. and armstrong and his copilot noticed that one of the propellers is going wonky. now, for those of you who don't fly, it's very upsetting to a plight when a propeller starts going wonky because if the propeller comes loose it becomes a flying chainsaw and the pilots told this guy that he had to be jettison and the guy said you can't jettison me i'm having valve problems and they said we're really sorry you're going down and they jettisoned him and right after they did that propeller came loose and came into this flying chainsaw and fi

we love our na oupartnership with nasa. we share activities together such as satellite telescope, as well as working for new plants. 1969 was an eventful year in art, politics, and culture. probably no event was more important more inspiring, or more transforming them the moon landing. the world change forever that day. all of us form my generation remember where we were when it happened and when we saw it on television. i was a student at the university california working at home on my phd. on that day, we were in binding on the side at a beer garden celebrating the landing. we hoisted one in your honor. tonight, he will hear from those who did it. we are honored they are here. in a speech at rice university at 1962, president kennedy described the russian as, the most hazardous and dangerous and greatest adventure on which man can ever embarked. here in the smithsonian, we are dedicated to telling an ever expanding story of our fascination with flight and space exploration. here we celebrate the incredible accomplishments

director of the nasa tracking station in guam. a crucial antenna, a night before the astronauts for supposed to slash down. it went on the brink. it wasn't working because a bearing failed. greg's dad realized there was no time to dismantle it and try to fix it the right way. he surmised if there was enough grease on it it would work okay. none of the adults could get their arms down there to get the grease. greg comes in. they sent for him. he put grease on the bearing and apollo splashed down safely the next day. at the time greg says he had no idea this was such a big deal. of course, it turns out without that antenna, nasa would not have been able to make its final communications with the astronauts before their splashdown. his role was chronicled in the official nasa transcript of the mission and greg got a thank you note from neil armstrong. he owns a gymnastics school in south carolina and is proud of the small role he says that he played. he did want to be an astronaut. he wanted to be part of the space program. go to cnn.

i was working for nasa on the day that the lunar landing occurred. i am 70 years old now, at the time i was looking at the nasa research center in cambridge, massachusetts, right beside m.i.t. and i was working on laser applications for studying the atmosphere. and we were all gathered in the lunch room at the center watching the lunar landing. i am so disappointed we don't ;like t. and one other thing has to do with my concern about how politics gets into science and kind of has in my destroyed initiatives at the time. but this new center was put there in massachusetts by the hard work of teddy kennedy. he was getting a lot of credit for that, during the nixon era, two nights before that landing was the incident and all subsequent incident that arose after that. we had that center closed after christmas and all the credibility for scientific initiatives that kennedy had been pushing were just blown out the window. what i wanted to say, the big issue for me was that since that time we could do more things, and i wish that politics would stay out of b
