"today in the bay"'s christie smith live in oakland with an update. good morning, christie. >> reporter: good morning to you, john. and happy friday. i just checked the court's website, and it looks like lawrence denard is due back in court here in oakland at 9:00 this morning to get an attorney, and possibly enter a plea. now, if he were convicted on all of these charges, he could face life in prison. but those who know him say he would not hurt a child. the 26-year-old patroly was charged with murder in the drive-by shooting that killed 3-year-old carlos nava monday. it was a horrible shooting that has shaken east oakland area where neighbors have seen their share of violence. now, police say he shot at rival gang members monday afternoon, but instead hit and killed carlos. denard's prior convictions include grand theft and being a felon in possession of a gun. now, pit what looks pretty bad a woman who knows him, says she was his ex, says it's not the whole story. >> we're looking from the outside on in, it's like, he's guilty, he's guilty. but he'

anne makovec is in oakland with the proposele that has divided the city. good morning, anne. >> reporter: good morning. some people look at it as the city needs to pull out all the stops to fight gang violence, and others are afraid that this is an assault on civil liberties. i'm here at the site of the shooting that has affected the whole community. carlos nava the 3-year-old boy who was killed by a stray bullet on august 8 prompting people really here to grasp at solutions to stop the violence . council president larry reid and councilman ignacio de la fuente are pushing for a citywide curfew and to enforce and expand current gang injunction from fruitvale to east and west oakland. they are similar to restraining orders. mayor jean quan says it's political grandstanding. the community members have varied views on the subject as well but most agree that something needs to be done. >> it's just hard. so far, this year, 70 people have been killed in oakland. i'm da lin, kron4 news. >> at least 50 cars have been vandlessed in the city of santa cruz in a three-hour window. the crimes were concentrated in the city's west side. we see the damage. >> reporter: here you can see one of the dozens of cars that were damaged sometime between 11:00 p.m. friday night and 1:00 a.m. saturday morning. this mercedes had two tires slashed. check out this jetta. the paint has, not only been scratched but you can see that a swastika has been carved into the trunk. six of the damaged cars were marked up with hate symbols and they could face a hate crime charge on top of felony vandalism. although some question if racism had anything to do with this. >> i don't think it was a hate crime. it seemed like some pinky kid type thing to do. >> the fact that so many cars were hit has left some in this community shocked and concerned. >> this type of activity has never happened in this neighborhood to my knowledge and i've here a long time. i hope they can be caught,

kimberly terry is in oakland where she just spoke to b.a.r.t. officials. >> reporter: hello, everyone. the group behind this anonymous released the statement outlining their plan to b.a.r.t. officials on friday and officials say since then they've been working round-the-clock to do what they can to prevent this attack and to defend themselves. they've even gotten homeland security involved, who is said to be monitoring the situation very closely. anonymous has plantalked about s for b.a.r.t.'s web site to be shut down. hackers have gotten names, phone numbers of passengers. bart.gov seems to have remained secure, though. the plan by anonymous also calls for a protest during rush hour at the civic center b.a.r.t. station tomorrow. according to anonymous, an infamous hacker protest grum, this is in response to the agency's efforts to shut down a protest over the july 11th fatal shooting of charles hill, a homeless man. the day of that scheduled protest on thursday, b.a.r.t. police shut off cell phone service and as a result that protest never happ

i got off the phone with oakland police, in fact, oakland police were just here 15, 20 minutes ago, trying to speak with witnesses. this is part of the produce mart here in oakland by interstate 880, the shooting happened right down the street there. there is some yellow police tape there. oakland police are saying at this point it looks like details are still sketchy, still coming in. but what they know is that three people were in a car when there was a dispute with someone in another car. the car -- the call came in as a possible road rage incident near fourth and franklin streets about 11:30 last night. someone opened fire on the car that had three people inside. when police arrived on scene they discovered that one man had been shot. he was taken to highland hospital and last listed in critical condition and undergoing surgery. so far there with been no arrests and oakland police are still working on a suspect description. that's the latest. reporting live in oakland, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> a high speed police chase on 880 early this morning ended with the driver of th

in east oakland. started at 11:00 a.m. when police got a call about a violent carjacking, spotted the stolen car with four men inside began a chase. suspects jumped out and started running. at some point, one officer did fire upon a suspect. no one was hit. police eventually arrested two men. however two others are still at large. the three nearby schools kept kids inside today, and released them as usual, after school. >>> another difficult story to digest, an oakland father was sth shot to death as his 6-year-old son looked on. tonight police are hunting for the suspect and a community is in a familiar position, mourning another senseless act of violence. jose and his 6-year-old son had left a supermarket yesterday afternoon, when police say two men tried to rob him. investigators haven't determined whether esparza resisted or why the men shot and killed him. the boy was not hurt. the killing marked oakland's 78th homicide of this year alone. >>> as the violence increases so does the number of children caught in the cros

the oakland police chief floated the idea to oakland city leaders a while back as an option that may reduce crime after reviewing juvenile crime statistics like these from last year. the categories of homicide, shootings, burglaries and automotive theft. 155 juvenile were arrested and 283 were considered suspect. that is a total of 4382 and house. for the summer months of 2010, the number increases from june to august. 139 do without were arrested in 480 were considered suspect. that is a 41 percent increase during summer vacation from school. >> officials say that this time there is nothing on the table when it comes to any type of curfew for the city of oakland. i'm hazzig manyud with kron4 news. >> we also talked with oakland residents about the curfew idea. >> i do not support it, it is nothing against cutting down violence i just do not support a curfew. >> i support it, i am tired of seeing the young to--use it being out here running around talking crazy having guns and stuff like that. >> i do not think it would be a good idea. i think it is better to give the use a message th

kristy seifkin is in oakland with more on who this man is. kristy, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, frank. yesterday morningers attended a rosary for 3-year-old carlos nava and today there will be a funeral for him at saint bernard's church a few blocks from the memorial where he was killed. it was a week ago that a stray bullet hit him in the neck. two other men were walking in front of him. they were also hit. they survived. police believe that the shooting was gang-related. this friday las vegas authorities arrested 22-year- old willie torrence of oakland. they believe he is responsible for driving the car the day of the shooting. he was out on parole for a prior violation and responded in las vegas while out driving. 26-year-old oakland resident lawrence dennard is the second man police believe was involved in the shooting. he was arrested in pittsburg on tuesday and thursday arraigned for one count of murder two counts of attempted murder and one count of possession of a firearm. torrence will appear in a las vegas courtro
