sanjay gupta about it a short time ago. so sanjay, what are the chances that oral sex actually caused michael douglas' cancer? is there any way to know for sure how you get it? >> yeah, well, it's interesting because in his case, you have the history of also him smoking and drinking, and so any doctor is going to look at all the various risk factors and say smoking and drinking are significant risk factors for oral cancer, throat cancer, the type of cancer that michael douglas had. but to the second part of your question, can you know for sure, the answer is actually yes. what they do, anderson, is they will take the tumor, they will specifically look at it and what they're searching for is dna of the virus, the human papilloma virus, hpv. if they find it, they can almost definitively say this was caused by the hpv infection. it's a little more confusing in his case, but yes, you can know. it's a knowable question. >> it's certainly gotten a lot of people talking. this has gotten a lot of attention. give him props for being

sanjay gupta with us. again we don't know but there's a fascination because he was only 51 years old. we seem to have a bag of mixed factors. he had been taken care of himself recently, looked good, his friends said. some smoking, drinking and admittedly by james himself drug use in his past. >> still 51 is young. the average age of a first heart attack is somewhere in the mid-60s. no question the things you mentioned will accelerate that. yesterday we talked about weight but you want to know high cholesterol, high blood pressure, all of the things that obviously we don't know and his doctors may know and may have contributed to this. as far as the other sort of risk factors, even past drug use could potentially be a risk factor years later, that's something as well. this autopsy could answer some of those questions. could this have been a neurologic neurological problem, an aneurysm. by the time he got to the emergency room he had already passed away. >> does that tell you anything right there? >> it tell

sanjay gupta joins us with more. how common is tb. >> not that common. something we hear more about in developing countries. but there's still some 10,000 or so cases roughly a year that do occur. we often hear about them when there's some sort of scare like this or cl's a cluster of cases. i should point out, jake, to your question, the number of cases overall has gone down over the last couple of years as well. but the concern here as you can guess is this is a very contagious disease, a bacterial disease that can potentially spread from person to person and can cause significant lung problems and you have to screen people who may have been exposed. so, for example, in a suburb not too far from where i am now in atlanta, they had to screen some 100 people not that long ago because of a possible exposure to someone who had active tb. there's active tb and what is known as latent tb which is somebody who had been exposed in the past, had the disease in the past and was not currently contagious. you have to separate who has active disease and who has evid

sanjay gupta, cnn reporting. >>> and the pictures of the storm are just incredible. every time they come out. you're looking at a tornado as it touched down near el reno, oklahoma. getting you ready for today, there's still a threat of tornadoes across the midwest through tonight. but definitely not like anything we saw yesterday. we are watching, though, for severe weather from texas all the way through kentucky and into ohio and of course, we'll be tracking all of that weather for you. a huge asteroid went by earth yesterday or did you miss it? the good news is it never came any closer than 3.6 million miles from our planet. at 1.7 miles wide and equipped with its very own moon, if it hit us, it could cause a global catastrophe. in perspective, it's believed the asteroid that wiped out the dinosaurs was six miles in diameter. cnn's tom foreman has more. >> we've been hearing all this talk about things hurdling toward space to earth and nasa keeping an eye on them. if you were go to arizona, not far from flagstaff, you could see this. this is a crater left by a mete

sanjay gupta has a look at one woman who found out she had breast cancer while studying the disease in medical school. >> reporter: her research got national attention. >> cases of advanced breast cancer in younger women are actually on the rise. that is the alarming headline just published in the journal of the american medical association. >> reporter: but it was dr. rebecca johnson's own diagnosis of breast cancer at age 27 that motivated her to conduct the study in the first place. >> when i was diagnosed and read the medical literature, i was trying to figure out how common breast cancer was in young women and it was hard to do because all the articles i read at that time, this was back in the late '90s, said breast cancer is rare in young women. >> reporter: dr. johnson was a medical resident in 1995 when she discovered a lump in her chest. a biopsy confirmed it was a malignant tumor. >> i looked at the surgeon and his eyes were just huge and stricken looking and i said what? he said i think this is cancer. >> reporter: a mastectomy and four rounds of key though therapy quickly f
