in an interview with our own nic robertson the engineers union representative said that this engineer nodded off before he rounded that treacherous curve on those tracks. >> it's happened to all of us. you catch yourself -- sometimes we catch ourselves it's too late we're in the guardrail, right? i've done it myself. and unfortunately, i believe that's what's happened here. and it's a tragedy. and there's a lot of lives that are never going to be the same ever again. >> he added that the engineer is a good human being who is quote extremely distraught by what happened. so what's it like to live through a crash like this one? today will was a fascinating moment during wolf blitzer's afternoon program in which he's talking to cnn correspondent nic robertson who shares this harrowing story of when he actually lived through a violent train crash. >> nic let me bring you back into this conversation. you were in a train crash yourself. tell us when that happened, what it was like. >> wolf, it was a long time ago. 1984. i was on my way to start literally my first day at work. the train was t

our own nic robertson is at the crash site in the bronx. we are expecting this news conference any minute now but still, some details have come out over the course of the day about what investigators have been finding out. what's the latest? >> reporter: well, we know that the second of the event recorders has now arrived in d.c., the data has been downloaded. that will be important to determine the speed of the train and whether or not any braking was applied before it entered that curve. if you take a look over my shoulder now, you can see that all of those cars have now been pulled out of the dirt, not only pulled out of the dirt, but put back on the track and moved away from the scene of the derailment. that in itself is something that the engineers from the ntsb will be able to look at and analyze to see how these carriages, if any of these cars, rather, were damaged prior to the accident. there will be information there they will be able to glean as the cars are moved away from the scene. we understand from metro north that the train

nic is on the scene. tell us what you're seeing. >> reporter: well, jake, still seeing people being taken away from the scene here, walking wounded wrapped in a blanket, another person on a stretcher being wheeled away by paramedics. i talked with one lady who was inside the theater when it happened. she was sitting quite close to the front, she said about 40 minutes into the performance, it was dark inside the theater, then she was aware of people moving, people saying watch out, watch out. then she said the ceiling started collapsing. first of all slowly, then much faster. she believed the collapse was more towards the back of the theater. she could see plaster and wood coming down. the air was full of dust. she said at least one woman she was aware of had a broken leg. paramedics taking the injured next door and one of the injured taken away by paramedics. this is a developing situation. it's still an ongoing situation. this particular eyewitness we talked to was uninjured. she said she had seen other

now, nic, was the hospital prepared to treat these types of injuries? >> well, the hospital here says it has trauma training. this is a trauma one clinic. they practice for this sort of thing. they never want to see it happen but this morning the timing was very lucky for the hospital and for the casualties coming in. they were just changing shifts. the night trauma shift switching out with the daytime trauma shift. so both shifts were here and they tell us that staff in the hospital came from other areas and the hospital to help out as well. they were able to deal with all the casualties they were getting in a very timely fashion, rosa. >> all right. nic robertson, live in the bronx. thank you so much. >>> we move now to north korea where a u.s. korean war veteran is being held accused of war crimes. the u.s. government is pleading for north korean authorities to release 85-year-old merrill newman. north korean state media have released video showing what they say is a confession and an apology. former u.n. ambassador bill richardson was asked about ne

what about these passengers, nic? i know earlier you were at the hospital where a lot of these patients were taken. you talked to a doctor there. what did he tell you about these people? >> gosh, well, what we're hearing from the doctor at st. barnabas hospital, very traumat, clearly, for him to deal, and his colleagues to deal with all these patients coming in. he still has nine patients in the hospital. seven in icu. one in critical condition. the gentleman in critical condition broken vertebrae, but his story is so much deeper than we had originally understood. we learned about a 14-year-old boy who was injured on the train. he was traveling with his father. his father is the one with the broken vertebrae. listen to what the doctor told us. >> he was on the train with his son. his son was 14 and was also brought here and was evaluated and had enly minor injuries. i spoke to that family when the son was ready to go home while the father was still undergoing his mri scan, but i think his wife already at that point un

nic robertson joins me live by phone now. from your vantage point and from what you have heard from investigators, what's the latest? >> reporter: we can see the rescue workers as you can see from the helicopter pictures they still have ladders up against the side of the train and it appears at the moment that they have taken all of the people out of the carriages on their side. we're not seeing any work on the rescue workers on the side at the moment. that one possibly the lead almost in the water. others behind it crumpled up lying on their side. many years ago i was involved in a plane crash like this. all of those passengers in there it would have been a disorientating experience as the train was thrown from the tracks lying on its side. we have been able to see at least one person being taken away in an ambulance. hazmat vehicles arriving on the scene. right now the emergency workers are focusing more it appears on the track than it is on the carriages and that's an indication that we have at the moment that potentially

can you get us up to speed be on the shooting, nic? >> reporter: the young teacher was exercising, his regular routine morning exercises, we're told, when he was killed. this comes hard on the heels just a couple of days after adam godan, the american al qaeda spokesman released his 17-minute internet posting in arabic, calling on libyans and other muslims, specifically libyans, to rise up in vengeance against the united states and americans in libya because of what he said was the wrongful arrest about two months ago of abu al nasan libya. godan calling for an attack on american interests. there isn't a claim of responsibility yet. we don't know if it's al qaeda. shocking similarities with what happened with chris stevens, remembering back to that last year. a couple of days before chris stevens killed, the head of al qaeda at that time calling for an attack on american interests inside libya for the killing by drone of al qaeda's number two at that time, a libyan. so there are very big similarities here. al qaeda's spokesman calling

we want to go now to our nic robertson on site there at the scene in the bronx. tell me what you can see. >> reporter: candy, we've been able to look down on the wreckage and see a train that was made up of eight carriages. only two of them are actually left vertical on the tracks. the others derailed, at least two of them, are lying on their sides. two -- those two at 90 degrees to each other so the train buckled right around. it's on a bend in the track. the accident appears to have happened, the derailment appears to have happened right on the bend in the truck. there are a lot of emergency service workers in attendance appearing to work with what appear to be people by the side of the track where i'm standing with some of those police and ambulance vehicles. i've seen one lady loaded into an ambulance here. she was on a stretcher, her neck was in a brace. she appeared well but not moving too much. as i've been talking to you, there are more emergency vehicles arriving, hazmat vehicles also coming on the scene here, candy. >> so, nic, we're looking at these pi

nic, what do we know about this shooting? >> reporter: we know that he was running on the street, that the gunmen pulled up in a car next to him, they shot him as he was running along. there are some indications that perhaps they sort of moved up next to him, moved back, moved up and shot him. he was shot in cold blood, no chance of self-defense. he is a chemistry teacher at the international school in benghazi. benghazi has been getting increasingly dangerous. i was in libya just two months ago and at that time, westerners were being evacuated from hotels because it was so dangerous. but why was ronnie smith running on a road in benghazi? he must have felt to a degree that it was safe. well liked by his students, we're told there. >> what have we learned so far about ronnie smith, this teacher with a wife and child? >> reporter: you know, he's got a young son, a wife. he's well-liked by his students. many of them have been posting messages on social media websites saying that they like him, that he was one of the reasons the

. >> senior international correspondent nic robertson is outside the apollo theater. what's the latest? >> reporter: we've seen the fire service put a cherry picker up outside the apollo theater. we talk to one of the officials earlier. he told us they were checking the structure of the building to final out what had happened. he describe an area of plaster that had come down. he describe it as ten meters squared. about 30 foot by 30 foot squared. part of the ceiling inside that old auditorium. an ornate ceiling collapsed on the audience. seven people seriously injured. about 76, we're told, the walking wounded. people with cuts and scratches. people treated in the theater next door to the theater. some of the most badly injured treated for several hours before they were taken away in ambulances as the paramedics sought to stabilize their conditions. the fire service says everyone is out of the building. everyone is accounted for. no fatalities and now they are checking the structural soundness of the whole building. >> nic robson. can you tell us how serious are the

nic robertson is live for us in st. barn baabas hospital in the bronx. you said some of them were in surgery. >> reporter: some of them still in surgery. two critical. of the 12 people, one lucky young boy will be discharged. he just suffered cuts and bruises. his father not so lucky. he's still being treated here. doctors here have been describing to us just the severity of some of the injuries and the trauma people can expect in the future. >> among the more serious injuries, there's one gentleman with a spinal cord injury that could be quite, quite serious. the other more serious injuries are severe fractures and what we call open fractures, fractures where the bone comes through the skin or the skin above the fracture outside the fracture is also broken through, also. those are much more serious. the rates of infection and serious complications are higher with those sorts of injuries. so there are two patients, one with an elbow area open fracture and one with an open fracture of the leg right around the knee area. those patients will both likely req

thanks very much, nic robertson, we'll get back to you, as well. let's move on to i health scare for passengers on a us airways express plane that landed in phoenix. one of the passengers is being tested for tuberculosis. it was taken off the plane when it landed stopped short of the terminal. the other passengers were told to see their doctors. >> we have been exposed to a person who has active tuberculosis. that was the extent of the information. nobody from us airways said a word. >> let's bring in senior medical correspondent elizabeth cohen. the passenger also says they were told that their chance of infection is low. so how concerned should these passengers be about getting tb? >> i think the concern is quite low, wolf. let's look at what the cdc told us today. first of all, we don't even know that this gentleman has tb. they're testing him. no infectious disease has been confirmed so far in the passenger. even if a passenger had infectious tb, the duration of the flight was so short, there would likely be no risk of exposure to other passeng
