baltimore's baseball team is the baltimore orioles. they play at oriole park at camden yards in downtown baltimore. orioles were supposed to play a home game last night against the chicago white sox. for all the reasons that you think that orioles game in baltimore last night was canceled. they also decided to postpone another game that was due to be played today. also a home game in the orioles' downtown baltimore stadium. the game that was scheduled for today, they also have another home game scheduled for tomorrow wednesday. today the orioles announced tomorrow's game, the wednesday game, it will be played. they are not postponing that one. it's going to be played at home at the orioles home stadium in baltimore, but that game will be and i quote, closed to public. which means that the baltimore orioles and the chicago white sox will be playing a professional baseball game in baltimore tomorrow in a completely empty stadium. no lines for beer or peanuts. the wave might finally work. but, boy, is that going to be weird. nobody in maj

erica green is a baltimore sun reporter who has been out in the streets of baltimore all day. thank you very much for being with us. >> thanks for having me. >> can you give me what you've seen today in terms of the trajectory and where the momentum is? >> sure. i started out at the very beginning of how this all transpired. it started with a posting on social media of high school students saying they were going to have a purge, a play on the movie "the purge," was which a 24-hour time of lawlessness and they were going to converge at a mall in west baltimore. that indeed happened around 3:00 p.m. students and police confronted each other there. the police were ready for that because they did intercept that message earlier in the day. by the time i got there around 3:20 bricks were being hurled at police officers. the crowds began to swell on both sides. police officers came in with reinforcements. students from other schools, and i say students because even the police officer have confirmed they did confront mostly school-aged kids and really it was just an intense hour-long,

the death of baltimore resident freddie gray while in baltimore police custody. but these solidarity protests tonight are happening across the country. this right here is minneapolis. right now you see a pretty large group of protesters blocking a significant roadway in minneapolis, minnesota. earlier tonight the largest protest for a while was in new york city. this is union square tonight in manhattan. hundreds of people started gathering at this new york event. earlier on in this evening, protests turned confrontational and law enforcement started arresting people. police had handed out flyers to protesters saying they would arrest people if they stood in the street or if they blocked traffic even pedestrian traffic. some of that was heated. we don't know how many arrests there were in downtown manhattan tonight but we are monitoring the situation on the ground in new york. we'll have a live report in just a moment. significant rallies and marches in boston, massachusetts, about 500 people turned out. washington, d.c., only about 40 mile ace way from baltimore

so this is real baltimore. this is not tourist baltimore. this isn't the baltimore you see when you go to an orioles game or you go to see you know the boat in the water. this is further up the road. this is about 25 to -- i'd say about 25 blocks north. if you made a cross with your hands, this is right in the middle of the city and this is a predominantly black neighborhood. but i wouldn't call this a poor neighborhood. baltimore has a variety of neighborhoods. they go very quickly from wealthy to pretty impoverished. all of a sudden you will be in a poor part of town with a lot of baunled homes. this is not that area. this is actually a pretty busy alive place. this is very close to the city's board of education facility where they run all of their schools. and wendy has something she wants to say. >> we found out what that building is that looks like a residential building. it is. it is the penn north plaza senior building. >> oh dear. oh it is. >> like an old folk's home there so you can imagine the anxiety there tonight as the building

when you're from baltimore, you're from baltimore. it's something in your dna. at the same time i see my officers boarding that bus behind you, they love baltimore too. i had officers come up to me and say i was born and raised in this city. this makes me cry. one of my officers came and said i went home and cried last night. this is a sad part of my city. what you're seeing today within our community also is people out celebrating and trying to heal this community. it's clear that what we have to do is change the culture within the baltimore police department. that's something that we've started on two and a half years ago and doing things totally different, bringing this community inside the police department taking the police department and sitting down and reading to five six and seven-year-old kids. bringing athletics. we are more to do. but we can't do it this way by destroying their beautiful city. we have a lot of things that we need to change and we're willing to work that direction. very shortly we've had an okay day today. we had a small event that to

i can tell you, i was able to get around east baltimore, west baltimore, massive crowds in west baltimore. that is just adjacent to the cvs which you saw burned last night. that's the cvs where you saw some of those rioters cutting the hose to at least help put out that fire at that cvs. massive crowds already there, here this afternoon. so far, being in touch with police they haven't reported too much in terms of any kind of rioting thus far. at least what i can tell you what i saw. peaceful protesting happening in the city of baltimore. in fact some people joining in a circle of prayer. here's what we know as far as the city is concerned -- now under a state of emergency. today, schools closed. a couple of federal offices will be closing early today. a mandatory tur few fewer than eight hours a-- curfew fewer than eight hours away. i'm told what we're looking at a helicopter. and you have the governor of maryland here. and i believe i actually saw this helicopter not too long ago here in the beautiful blue skies of baltimore. taking a look touring the damage touring the destruction. the

baltimore erupting. we have riots in baltimore right now out on the streets tonight. it was peaceful. it has turned ugly and violent. you're looking at live pictures. stores have been looted and destroyed, now even lit on fire by rioters there is a massive fire and fear that it could get worse as darkness falls tonight. the angry rioters today overtook a police car. they smashed the roof and the window with bats metal rods and rocks. others set a police car on fire that fire spread to a second patrol car. rioters then set a third car alight. seven officers have now been injured. some of them have broken bones. and one officer was actually found unconscious. this is according to the baltimore police department. all are now receiving treatment. we have seen the crowds looting stores. and that is what wolf was just talking about, that cvs was looted. you can see people running in and completely emptying that store, breaking the windows, destroying it. a check cashing store also looted a liquor store. once this looting started, there was very little if any police presence

but frankly, this is a baltimore city situation. baltimore city was in charge. when the mayor called me which quite frankly we were glad she finally did, instantly we signed the executive order. we also had our team prepared. i had already called her general singh to ask her to be prepared to be called up. we were in the second noor of the statehouse and we were trying to get in touch with the mayor. she finally made that call and we immediately took action. >> governor do you think you should have gotten the call earlier? would you have liked to have acted earlier? >> i know the city has done everything in their power to get this under control. they're all under tremendous stress. we're all here on one team and i want to thank the mayor for her involvement. we're just all happy we're able to help at this point. >> governor can you detail what the national guard will be capable of that baltimore city has not been? >> the national guard will provide assets and be working as backup to the state police and the other police agencies. we have not taken over. but we a

although baltimore has had peaceful protests since then many people in baltimore have been calling for peace, even putting themselves between police officers and the enraged public public, we have seen people throw rocks and bricks at police officers, and police responded with some of the same bricks and with projectiles and tear gas. 15 officers were hurt in today's clashes. most of them minor injuries, but two injured seriously enough that they are still hospitalized tonight. in just the last hour we have heard from the family of freddie gray and the family's supporters. they've been calling for an end to violence. the family's lawyer spoke about the ongoing investigations into mr. gray's death. >> we don't want to rush to justice. we don't want that. we want justice. we want accurate fact finding, no matter how long it takes, as long as it doesn't get stretched out unreasonably. we want to know all the details of this investigation so that we can decide as a community what to do next. we're not interested in prejudging the situation. >> the lawyer for freddie gray's family speaking

i'm in baltimore. there's a state of emergency in effect here right now coming well after baltimore fell victim to marauding rioters and looters. over two dozen arrests, over 15 police officers injured, cars and businesses as you can see on your screen just torched all day, all night. the worst day of violence reserved for the day that freddie gray was being buryied after apparently having been injured while in police custody over a week ago. that is the situation here. now, 5,000 reinforcements from neighboring states have been brought in to help control the situation which has been the ugliest rioting in baltimore since the '60s. schools in baltimore today shut down. the mayor now imposing a curfew 10:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. the big question is can authorities enforce it? and it's a legit question after what we saw last night. sirens all day, through the darkness signaling the unchecked chaos. cnn had people in the action all day and night. here is what we saw. on a day that expected peace and mourning
