let's begin with the indiana law. holsinger, what do you think the impact is of this whole debate on the republican party? paul: clearly, a debate that we were not anticipating having. any trial lawyer will tell you that you don't go into court and so you know the answers to the questions he will ask. i think in this case they did not know in advance that they would unleash this firestorm of debate. i think it is not ultimately where republicans wanted to be, having a conversation if you do or do not have to bake a cake for gay marriage. in the beginning days of the gop primary season, i don't think it's where most of the party wanted to be. on the other hand, i think this to perkins does have a point that it energizes a portion of the voters that they need to have of the poll. if the passion last, it could be helpful to the eventual nominee. michael: i'm not convinced that it's a problem at this early stage of the primary cycle. if this conversation is happening in october 2016, that is perhaps more problematic. it's

mark: in indiana, the bill to -- in indiana and arkansas, the bills to amend the so-called religious freedom loss have sailed through. the one in indiana passed lickety-split through both chambers and is now on the governor's desk. there is every reason to believe governor mike pence will find the measure. lawmakers in both states along with the governors of course, are searching for an alternative that will satisfy everyone. does the fact that these two legislators -- legislatures met their end of week deadline mean that there is a way to split the baby? john: it obviously means that in both the states there was an extraordinary sensitivity to the backlash and everyone was looking for some way out of the cauldron that have bring all this. i think it is hard to split the baby in the end, because the people on the far right will not be set as with the solution, no matter what happens indiana and most people on the far left will be satisfied with a solution. and as a political issue, they still have to go into 2016. the baby has not been split in that it has not been put to rest. mark:

federal law on one side indiana on the other. federal law was designed to protect rituals of religious minority specifically native americans using peyote. which got caught up in a bundle of drugs that were outlawed and the native americans said it's part of their religion and went to the supreme court and that got the law and this indiana law flips that. it protects religious actors unundered law the law, under federal law you must show a substantial burden to your religious exercise. indiana, burden or likely burden which means you don't have to be harmed but you may be. government must be a party. what does that mean? it's key. it was supposed to stop state action the government from infringing on your rights of religious exercise. here it can be a private party. that's a major concern. that means when someone doesn't like something, they can sue you about it and this extends protection to those suits. and the last one, anti-discrimination amendment was rejected. which means that under the indiana law, that part of the graphic

the indiana religious freedom law which the governor reluctantly plans to fix, and there is a similar law on the books for arkansas and the back lash is spreading. what happened to justice the and freedom for all. and many have barely heard of john stu jon stewart's replacement and he is already in hot water. we have a lot to get to the night, and now to indiana as mike pence promises that gay ss and lesbians discrimination will not be allowed under his discrimination law, and we have miguel marquez live there. and the governor flip-flopped in fixing the law, and what did he say today? >> he said look he doesn't think that the law as that he signed in private discriminated against gays and lesbians but he want abs fix to it. what is the fix. he says that he will not sign something that include ss protections for the gays and lesbians in the civil rights charter for the state, but he will akccept something different, and what it will be i don't know but i did ask him about the personal views in the press conference about the business views and religious beliefs and whether they should
